  1. As an atheist in a highly spiritual country I do my best to avoid religion. You can do whatever you believe in, just as long as it doesn't affect me. Yes, I find it sad that people feel the need to do certain things, but it's their time and their money. Looking at my own life, the only thing that annoys me is that my Mom occasionally pays 500thb for an hour of fortune telling. But, like I said: it's her money.

  2. Personally I get insulted very, very rarely. Both Thai's and Farangs all treat me with respect in everyday life. Then again, I'm a very quiet and private person.

Yes, this is quite normal. Same here. I don't get why certain other farangs on TV get dissed on such a frequent basis.....

I think he explained it in his post. He keeps a low profile. Don't say much, don't interact much, don't give them anything to be jealous about, don't expose yourself, you will be safe... However, we're not talking about avoiding a gang fight, either.

Just mind your own business, don't be a dick about insignificant things and avoid shady looking people. It's not rocket science.

  3. Many are organized mafia "employees" dropped off and picked up by their handlers....the more money they attract the better areas/locations they are placed into.....

Some with the sleeping/drugged kids are not even their own kids and have a handler somewhere close by.....

Kind of like in that movie about the kid in India that won the quiz show and how they depicted the beggars....

At least they are not aggressive here like in the Philippines....

Makes it hard to sort out who to have compassion for when you have a good idea someone is actively waiting to take it away from them.....

You're talking about "Slumdog Millionaire". Yeah I've heard the stories about "organized beggars". You can write an entire book about the morality of giving these people money or not.

But at the end of the day I just accept the facts and move on: Hey, You were simply born into unfortunate circumstances and have a shitty life. I was born with a silver spoon in my mouth and have a good life. That's it. It's not your fault. It's not my fault. Thus I don't see it as being my duty to give to the less fortunate. You know, cause it's not my fault.

  5. This is one of my benefits of living in Thailand. Every time I see poor people, I am reminded of what a lucky and privileged life I have compared to 95% of the rest of the World population and am thankful for those astronomical odds being on my side.

As for giving money to the poor, let's just say I watched Slumdog Millionaire too.

  6. That's a very difficult question for people talking to me. I don't get asked a lot, but they're usually Taxi drivers who want to bring up a conversation.

Most people think I'm Italian, Greek or at the very least Mediterranean.

I was born in Bangkok, my mom is Thai, my dad is German. I spent my formative years half in Australia half in Europe. I have a unique, untraceable English accent that is the result from my multicultural upbringing. I speak Thai with a 100% Bangkok accent. So after listening to me talk, they get even more confused.

  7. I asked my Khun Yai why Chinese people are so loudmouthed. She said something along the lines of:

The Chinese people used to live in a very communistic country. Whispering or talking to each other quietly meant you had something to hide from the state and you could be immediately arrested and interrogated. Wishing to avoid this unpleasantness, the Chinese, over 3-4 generations have learned to speak very loud when talking to each other so that everybody in the vicinity knows exactly what they're talking about. Hence there are no Chinese whispers.

True story or is my Khun Yai getting senile?
