To my knowledge, you just need to change the reason for extensions of stay – your visa has long time expired – but you need a bank deposit of 800k baht matured for two month to do so. Some of the rules might be slightly different from province to province, so ask your local immigration office for the list of their requirements for extension of stay based on retirement. It's my impression that many have had similar experiences.
