  1. I wasn't aware that Thailand had a "pentagon I." Does anyone know of such an operation? Someone at The Nation, should inform the Thai government officals thrashing around with this proposal for a "pentagon II" that the Pentagon, headquarters of the US Department of Defense is so named beacuse the building has five sides. Aparently, in thrashing around for schemes to resolve the conflict in south Thailand, the Thai government has haphazardly utilized this pentagon nomenclature. The use of this terminology for a Thai scheme for the south certainly gives rise to questioning the Thai government's intention of resolving the conflict peacefully or by military force.

  2. History books will show that she "handled" the floods. Everything got back to normal and the Japanese kept investing despite factory floodings. Tourism was booming according to the Nation's accounts based on quotes by "key" officials. Crime and drugs were controlled, criminals were arrested, news was squashed.

Pronouncements on building code violation enforcement were made, everyone scurried about, payments were shifted, everything remained the same. Tablets were distributed, promises were kept. Education was identified as a problem, the administration assured that they would take measures.

Thailland recognized the Palestinians, made peace with the Iranians, and gave them a public high level hearing to claim that terrorists were not "real Iranians." The Thais pledged that terrorism events would not happened in Thailand and tourists need not be concerned. Food poisonings were down, investigated diligently and news follow up was squashed.

Human trafficking was denied, pregnant women who are migrant workers are proposed to be legislated off Thai soil when they give birth, but welcomed back to work for substandard wages after the birth. Thais lobbied the US embassy to lift terrorist alerts, and they wrote open letters. They lunched, they drank, they met, they talked, they blustered. They acknowledged corruption, but denied and refused to acknowledge the huge sex trade. However, they did protest the blacklisting of Thailand for illegal copying of intellectual property. They denied inflation of food prices. They fixed caved in sink holes and replaced torn out ATM machines. They declared shock and concern about poison fish use to make fish balls.

So all in all it's a commendable status quo. This is what Thailand is all about at its best. maintaining the status, plugging holes in the "system," refusing to assimilate into the real world, and denying that the outside world knows anything about anything, so that Thainess prevails. They outdid themselves with 12 new or reinforced "hub" schemes to make Thailand the hub of all hubs.

She did a great job by these standards. They have surveys to prove it, and if they don't have them, they can manufacturer the results instantly in a new random survey.

  6. They are "confirming" no spread to humans. But they are speculating, assuming, projecting, conceding, and asking people to bring their pets if they suspect. They have "tracked" this rabbit, and they confirm no rabies biting history with other infected animals.

What did you expect them to say under the guidance of the TAT? They will have more meetings about this. They have provided rabies vaccinations to 100 people and 20 animals in the immediate vicinity of this infected rabbit. They are also assuring a close surveillance. If this works, the Thais could be the rabbit rabies cure hub of the world. This could be big business.

  7. This puffer fish poison fish ball thing has been around for years. Last story was about coppers finding a truck on its way to Bangkok markets loaded with two tons of puffer fish meat. No newspaper follow up was ever observed. Seconding other posts, stay away from fish balls - street or packaged.

The puffer fish flesh is cheap, so the Thais try to use it instead of other non lethal fish.

  8. Of course he's encouraging government investment in farming. He's the farming monopoly in Thailand. He cautions on populism - giving the poor a fair shake. Sounds like an elite privileged comment.

Can you imagine a casino in or near Bangkok? The corruption that's rampant in Thailand and overlating a casino operation on that? They have the gall to compare a potential Thai casino to Macau, Las Vegas, and Singapore.

  9. The ambassador recommends "reading the fine print" before renting or buying. He seems to have forgotten that culturally the fine print doesn't matter in Thailand with Thais. They have a way of "interpreting" the fine print their own way. Thais manipulate and "interpret" business contracts and rental agreements the most expedient way. I have had numerous Thais over the years actually say - "well we didn't mean what it says" in the agreement or letter.
