Nothing against Khon Kaen, but this is BS. It does not offer anywhere close to the number of decent foreign restaurants, used bookstores, English language libraries, cheap English language cable TV options and a number of of other things that Chiang Mai does. It does have its own advantages for some people though.

Maybe you should do an extensive research on why alot of Thais that don't eat junkfood get cysts before you even comment like that. Their food is filled with chemicals and pestocides but when it comes to junkfood I think its more about personal choice. No one forces you to go to a junk food restaurant and if you want to someone to blame for kids getting fatter, blame the lazy parents who dont care enough about making a proper meal for the kids.

I know one that are quite versatile... While using the computer she can actually spare one eye for the soap running on the TV and talk loud with the auntie on the cellphone. Now that takes some skills and she still manages with one more, to piss her hubby off who´s actually trying do some work.

I think there are several reasons for the traffic mess in Thailand. How can you expect anybody be driving safe and well mannered when it only takes half a day to get a driver's license?

Second, if you take into fact that most of the people have poor eduaction along with a driver's test that doesn´t require more than for you to back, turn, park and use indicators, you can surely see the reason for the mess it is today.

I could be wrong but last time I checked accident statistics it was between 40-60 000 accidents PER YEAR. If you want to change this then you need to get the system working first.

US is one gigantic mix of foreigners living together and without making a comment that would seem rasist, I think it's not only because of the American driving culture but to alot of cultures involved. Since the dubious investigation of the crashed Air France airliner, I´m not sure Air France should be on the top of the list. The error will always be human whether it's the engineer, the mechanic or the pilot. Someone is obvious responsible for the crash.

Interesting .I came to live in Thailand in 1989. I wanted to get away from ALL of these western influences ,you are raving about. I have never been in a macs, once in a kfc( awful shit, Thai cooked chicken is so much better), never in a pizza hut, once in a pizza company. What crap it was. Tried a burger king ,NEVER again. This country is called THAILAND. I came here to live in THAILAND.Not some quasi "americana crap" country. Yes ,I do eat some western food ,AND Indian . but not S"h38"t. None comes from "fast food " sources.Unless it is Thai fast food , cooked by Thais, Great - I love it. So, I live in a small village , totally FREE of all this Sh&t. I live in Thailand. Not americana. There is enough corruption in this country ,without you lot forcibly corrupting it further.and destroying it.

First of all, as far as I know Pizza Company isn´t actually "American", it's Thai version of Pizza hut and the Thais actually fusion their own food with most farang restaurants like KFC. For example can you buy KFC Yam in US?

Many Thais actually believe that KFC is a Thai franchise and not American and are stunned when I reveal the horrible truth.

Junk food culture is in every country in the world and you can´t blame the Americans for spreading their franchise , we have alot of Europeans doing the same thing as well. For Thais is sth cool and sth hi-so since most people that live in rural areas don't know anything about foreigners. There sure is alot of Thai restaurants here so if you don´t like these kinds of franchise, just avoid it, no need for bashing.

For some Thai teachers they feel a sort of absolute power with their jobs and if a farang happens to come along their insecurity level goes straight to hell. They even feel threatened, not necessearly by that you are a farang but that you can look better than them because you ARE a foreigner. Racism is flourishing in Thailand.

Being a foreign teacher here can be problematic at best. Many of my friends who are teachers change workplace as soon as they get a problem with their co-workers, as a precaution. But I think also it depends on what kind of school it is and where its located.

Khon Kaen and Chiang Mai is like night and day. Once has Laos decendants the other Chinese, two very different cultures. If you really want to decide then why don´t you go and spend some time in Khon Kaen to see if its really for you since you are already familiar with CM.

The investors are fleeing but not only from Phuket but from whole of Thailand. Ever since the 49% ownership scheme came in, LOS started to drop investors rapidly.

With neither law enforcement nor integrity involved, it's just not worth creating business here. Hopefully that will change...

Had one driver whom I told that we were to pick up my friend near a pub. No problem so far, however once we picked my friend up he said that he is has to charge us the double since he needs to put food on his table. I think the excuses get worse and worse every year.

I dont have a hay fever but i have definitely the same symptoms as your wife . Itchy eyes and arms , running nose in the morning and some mucus in my throat. I went to the hospital and they gave me a skin prick test. They said i was allergic to bed bugs and dust . Where do you live? Bangkok busy area? Air pollution could be the cause too. Get some skin prick test any hospital can do that.
