It's all the fault of the farangs, who originally dropped the bomb on Thailand (or perhaps somewhere else in S.E.Asia), in the first place !
I was wondering the same thing... I don't recall any WWII bombing in central Thailand. There was a little along the Japanese rail road, but no widespread bombing or action in Thailand during the war. So where would this ordinance come from? WWII seems strange...
I'm pretty sure the RAF bombed Bangkok in WW2 at the same time they were bombing the Japs over the death rail camps. Just checked on Google: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bombing_of_Bangkok_in_World_War_II

As soon as I heard about the bomb I guessed some greedy little Arthur Daley type entrepreneur had a hand in this?
Cutting a WW2 bomb with a blow torch.....fark ????
UNBELIEVEABLE
Thailand; Hub of greed and stupidity!

Maybe spend some of that 2.2 Trillion baht on training the road builders how to build roads that last more than one rainy season. All the roads that have been widened around Sakon Nakhon area recently literally fall apart in less than a year. They lay the tarmac straight onto compacted soil with no concrete or aggregate layer beneath. Consequently as soon as the rains come the new section disintegrates and all traffic has to use the original middle section of the road.Back to square one. But I expect someone gets a new Benz out of these projects.

I am attempting to get a Thai driving licence and need some advice. It is not the licence that is the issue, it is the local immigration office.
To set the scene: I am here on a Non Immigrant O visa, I have a full British Driving licence but no International permit (it expired). The driving test centre said I need a medical and proof of residency from the immigration office. All sounds easy enough.
So I went to immigration to get the necessary docs. 1st visit I was told I would need two copies of passport and 500 baht, nothing else was required. Despite the fact we were sitting next to a photocopier we got sent away to get the copies.
2nd visit: On return to the immigration office the criteria changed when we saw a different immigration officer. Now I'm told I need to be on a house book, my wife has to guarantee me, I need two photographs and the fee shot up to 2000 baht.
I get the feeling I'm being fleeced. Do I have to do this at my local immigration office or can I go say to Udon Thani?
Confused. Can anybody help?
Thanks

2.2 Trillion, that is some serious tea money. Many snouts in the trough on this one!

"Hot Shot" in a 10-year old Mercedes E-class?
Unlikely
Yes good point, that E class would be a scrapper in many other countries. Not much of a hot shot really!

That wouldn't surprise me as I imagine a high proportion of sales go to those pesky foreigners. Thai philosophy is to extract maximum revenue as the white buffalo just keep coming back for more. I thought 200 baht a litre was too good to be true. Oh well, back to Leo Beer.Boxed wines have not been available in their usual (for us) outlets in the Rayong area.
A store clerk told me today that the price was set to double - very soon.

He really is a horrible nasty man, that's why he should run for PM.Clarkson is British. When I was living in the UK he was always on the telly.
He's always been an offensive brat. And along with many people, I hate him.
And yes, every time his stupid childish programmes appeared on tv, I changed channels.
Horrible nasty man.
Most of his points are fair and true, but no celebrity or peer has the balls to stand up and say it - unlike Jezza. Give the man credit, he punched Piers Morgan ! Any man worthy of that achievement is a hero in my book.
I reckon his sarcasm and wit flies over your head and that's why you didn't like him 'on the telly' when you spent your time in the UK? Learn some humour outside of political correctness big man!
*Point to note:
His apparently "childish" tv shows include the top watched Motoring TV show in the world.
Jezza for PM!!!!!! YEAH!!

I'm there with stevehaigh. We expect double charging at market and small shops but an international chain like Tesco should be more on the ball. Point of principle. Not worth the hassle and waste of time for 9 baht or 30 cents
You have lived here long enough to know how things work, except it
On a personal note I despise Tesco as an organisation having seen what that have done in the UK since I was a child. I avoid shopping there if possible.

A static 30 degree test will hardly replicate the forces at work when one of these pimped monsters is thrown round a bend on the wrong side of the road at 120kmph. And will do nothing to counter the poor driving standards of the driver at the end of a 15 hour shift off his face on Yaba and Red Bull. Nor will it reproduce the Thai obsession with having to get in front at ANY cost.Of course it's a very good idea, BUT this doesn't help against:
- ya baa
- sleep driver
- speedy driver.
Or a combination of all 3...............then you are on a slippery slope.

An envelope full of crisp new 1000 baht notes will take care of any need for prosecution.Phew..thats a relief!
We can rest in our reclining overnight seats now in the sure knowledge that along with Fire and Emergency rules and regs for nightclubs, this matter will be rigorously & ruthlessly enforced and wrong doers will be, wait for it!............. "prosecuted further according to the Thai law"

Would these government owned taxis be as well maintained as the government owned buses?
Sounds great . BUT government owned taxis would be worse. People would ripped off even worse .Copy the Singaporean model, government owned taxis that cabbies can rent. If they break the rules, refuse passengers, etc. they will lose their licence and can not get their hands on a taxi anymore. Simple and effective, just a touch more expensive!

They do and the unfortunate animals suffer horribly. If you have the stomach for it watch this 15 minute video on YouTube:it's sad. Why they did not sell them to Vietnam when they were alive still??

old news..
Maybe to you Mr Know-it-all but today was the first time I had come across this increase. I don't understand why you feel the need to post such a blatantly smug comment.
-
old news..
All other threads seem to talk about the increase only being applied to Mastercards?
Kasikorn and Siam both tried to charge me 180 baht on Visa Card today. Bangkok Bank still B150 but I imagine they will not be far behind. Yet another way to divest those pesky foreigners of their hard earned cash.

A new Forza is 160,000 baht and you didn't think to get it insured? Wow!

And there is no public anger, outrage and demand for action by those who "regulate" vehicle/road issues. But as with so many issues in the country it's just an acceptance of "thats the way things are" in a country that has a distinct talent for being unable to progress.

When I tell my Thai wife about these tradgies she barely bats an eye lid. Think that sums the attitude of the whole nation. They believe things are meant to be.

Isaans are especially money hungry and shameless team, you can't pay enough for them, you can't help enough for their families, you can't build enough big house for them, ALWAYS need MORE and MORE. Your wealth will be melt they take care of it.
Well, so much for "fair and balanced" -- accusing everyone in the Northeast with the same predatory motives. Bitter, are we?
I hear what you are saying but if you go to a farhang bar anywhere in Isaan and talk to 10 expats my guess would be 50% will have bought land, built a house, lost a motorbike to lay about brother in law, paid for sick buffalo then walked away from the lot. Wish I had a pound for every time I had heard this story.

I live in a mid size town in Isaan (we have a Robinson) when we have to go to the village about 50km out of town I'm tearing my hair out with boredom by the middle of day two. There are two farhangs there, one is a recovering alcoholic the other a full on alcoholic. Makes for some odd conversations. Hot, noisy, no internet. No wonder so many Thais drink themselves to death! I know boredom is a state of mind but Thai village life is not for me. But assuming you can drive, 24km is close enough to commute back and forth to town every day.

Totally agree. All the local Thai shop keepers and market stall holders where I live are careful and meticulous in charging me extra money for being a white buffalo.

Vietnam was a decade and a half after WW2. The RAF and USAF both bombed Bangkok in WW2. Bound to be unexplored munitions in the ground. The bombs dropped in the Vietnam war were on Vietnam and neutral Laos and Cambodia. Far from Bangkok.
