I paid for my wifes spouse visa application at a Dept of Immi office here in Oz prior to going over there in Feb to submit the application. I found through a friend who was also applying for his wife, but in Thailand and paid at the VAC that it was cheaper to pay here in Oz than in BKK. The exchange rate they use at the VAC is lower than the actual official rate, therefore costing you more. The amount he was charge turned out to be about 6000 baht more.

Kojaks original post requesting information on hotels was from 5th March '08. Assuming he is still looking for a hotel after all this time then the following link has a list of hotels as follows:
Just back from my Ubon trip ( a bit late than I planed.... ), the Wrong Way rooms were fully booked so found the Phadaeng Mansion - a brand new hotel opposite the worng way cafe ( a bit down on the soi ), just opened 2 weeks ago.
Great room for 500 baht - space room with big bed, new furnitures, a/c, tv ( only thai channels ), wide bathroom with hot water + blacony .
They still got a bit construction work on the site, so got a bit noise time to time but guess gonna be finished in a few days.
They were also installing wifi while I been there.
Very friendly stuff, got songtiew lines which stoping in front of the place.
Have checked as well the following hotels :
Nevada Inn ( on the compound of the Nevada hotel that now be named Ubon International hotel ) - 540 baht for single room but pretty crap.... small and smelly... the only good point is the location if u r for the night life spots... got a disco, pubs and lots of girls around....
Regent hotel - 700 baht, great location near Robinson but rooms loook a bit worn...
Pathumrat Hotel - 1200 baht, great rooms, great location also between Robinson and the Nevada.
But the Phadaeng mansion wins in all aspects ( IMHO ).
Haven't check the wrong way rooms - heard from other farang that they are good as well - worth to give it a try too.
Just some additional info:
Nevada Hotel I shall not comment as it has it's own topic above, but I have stayed behind WrongWay more times than I remember, and I find it's good money for value. (Phadaeng Mansion sounds good also)
Another hotel not mentioned before is the Ratchathani, south west corner of the city park and fairly opposite the TAT office. The hotel is partly renovated and in this section the prices are 600/800/1200.
N'joy bar is now managed by Lance (England) who has opened up the bar more and put in a pool table. The bar is more crowded than earlier, and both Thai and some western food are available
Hey Trond,
Is Louie still involved with Njoy bar and if so, send him my regards
Carl
Hi Carl
Loui and Eet still owns N'joy as it's a part of their house property, so they're around most days, while Lance rents and runs it.
I'll say hello to Loui when next time in Ubon -
Btw - when will you be back in Los? - long time since we had a few cold ones together
Trond,
I was back there in May for about 6 days just to pick up the wife and kids and bring them back to Oz. The past couple of trips have been just to organise visas etc. We intend to come back for a decent holiday towards the end of next year. If it was my decision I would be back there now but got to look after the kids education for a few years yet.
All the best and say gday to everyone.

There is or was a zoo in Ubon but I am unsure of the exact location. Also I have two sons myself and found that the Nevada hotel or Ubon International as its now renamed close to Tesco has a roof top swimming pool and its very clean and open for use by famillies and children for a small fee. Its never busy and a large sized pool so it should be visited if you have time. Some of the waterfalls are good for a swim also. Fishing can be done out at Sirinthon Dam or closer to Ubon city centre next to mun river where they also have floating restaurants. You can order food and sit and fish at the same time. Take your own fishing rod if you have one. There is also a temple we visited out close to sisaket on our last trip which is quite child friendly and has alot of animal statues and amuzing activities outdoors its called Prathat Ruang Rong. Failling all this you can take a look at the following web link for any other information:
www.weloveubon.com
There is a Tiger Zoo about 50 kms north of Ubon just before the town of Trakan Phuetphon. I have taken my kids and their cousins there about 2 or 3 years ago. Nothing like the zoo in BKK but still worth a visit. About 50 odd baht per person entry fee.
I have forgotten the number of the road to take but its on the Ubon - Khemarat road.
Enjoy

I don't know the person concerned - but for those that do I found this site - I wondered what the comments in Thai down the right hand side were?
Very kind and quite correct words by the author of the piece in the link

Trevor will certainly be missed by everyone that met him. I can recall many afternoons or evenings listening to his adventures over a beer at Wrong Way cafe. I was shocked by his premature death and feel privaleged by having known him.
All the best for the memorial on Sunday.

Well done mate and congratulations. It seems that the process may be getting easier for all concerned. In our situation we were lucky and located the childs father and he was willing to sign the appropriate forms allowing the child to leave the country.
Congrats again,
Carl

We also used bamboo latice for the reinforcing of our floors and carports when we built our house. That was 3 years ago and all seems fine. The guys building the house decided to do it this way as a means of saving a bit of money. They said as it is not carrying a heavy load it would be fine.

Also give the Ubonrak hospital a try. I have been there a couple of times in the outpatients department and have a couple of farang friends had ops there and they have all spoken highly of the place. Dont know the number but if you do a google search Im sure you will find it.

My wifes police check was actually written in english so there is no need for translation. You never see the medical report so there is nothing there you can do. All other docs such as tabien bahn, birth certificate etc needs to be translated.
-
From what I have been led to believe the visa allows the wife to enter and leave whenever she likes until notification of the permanant residency status. There should be no requirement for re-entry permits similar to what we have to go through to leave Thailand and remain on our long term visas.
-
My wifes police check was submitted in mid Jan and we received the letter from them about 23 Feb with the notification dated as at 19 Feb 08. Maybe there was a back log of check to be processed. Get it done as early as possible is probably a safe bet.
-
My wifes spouse visa was issued in mid Mar and it had a use by date of Jan 09.
-
We submitted our application at the end of Feb when I was in Thailand. My wife and kids did the medicals in early Jan and the police check in mid Jan.
-
The police check and medical can be done in advance of lodging the application. If you go to the immigration website you will find the list of hospitals in Thailand that do the medicals. You will need to call the one closest to you and speak with them about a time to have it done. There is also a form on the same website that gives you the address for the police check and what she needs to take with her. This will then sent to her at her nominated address. There is no need to translate these documents.
With the translation of your gf other documents ie. birth cert, tabien bahn, etc there is a translation service on the ground floor of the building where the visa application centre is. I used them and they were comparable in price and everything was done overnight. I also had to use their quick translation service for a document and that was back within the hour. Price was a bit higher for that one.
We had our application approved within a week and my family is now out here in Oz with me in sunny Canberra.
Good luck

In regard to the money question, as I was the sponsor (spouse) we put down zero for the amount of money being bought into the country. It was not queried as I showed evidence of my pay slips, letter from employer etc.
For all the translations I brought the ID, tabian bahn, birth certificate, several papers from amphur to verify that my wife was the sole carer for the kids, any change of name forms for the wife or kids etc. I think in this case that more is better than not enough. Dont forget that there is a translation service on the ground floor of the building. We used it and they had everything done overnight and they also have a service for stuff that needs to be translated within an hour or so.
Good luck
I'm sorry, the translation service is on the ground floor of which building?
It sounds quite convenient.
Thanks
Its on the ground floor of the CC building where the Visa Application Centre is. As you enter the building veer around to the left and follow the corridor towards the food court. Its almost opposite the small 7/11 shop there.

I will probably start an argument here but why would you buy 2 long necks of Leo when you can get 3 long necks of Chang which in my opinion is a much strong tasting beer. Leo tastes to ME like Budweiser as in too watery.
Before you jump down my throat I did say it was my opinion. Each to their own. Still heaps cheaper than buying beer in our home countries.

Are you from the UK? I've noticed a lot of Brits like Chang cause it's stronger tasting. My theory was the Thais had made a stronger beer with higher alcohol as it would taste better and give more bang when mixed with ice. I always thought this was it's recipe for success.
My own opinion is I can't handle Chang unless it's super cold. Singha is another one I find way to strong. I prefer Chang.
No mate, I am from Oz. I enjoy the stronger taste of Chang but if unavailable I really like the Singha beer. The funny thing up our way is that most of the restaurants carry mainly Leo although it is more expensive and Ive noticed that most thai diners usually bring their own alcahol, namely whiskey.
The good thing here is that if there is no Chang they are only happy enough to race away and get some for us to ensure that we stay at their restaurant.

Of course my experiment has no scientific usefulness and I will continue to drink the LEO in can or bottles, its still about the best stuff up here. On trips to Bangkok I like to try some Tiger but thats not available up either.
With the plummeting GBP v Thai Baht, and the Hon GB attacking my pension with his abolishing the 10p tax band, emergency measures are underway.
2 x big bottles of LEO = 90 baht
4 x cans = 100 baht
For the Aussie poster:- did I read sometime ago that Archa had won an award at some beer festival down under!!
My F-in-L, drinks that stuff, I,ve tried, but just awful.

As a person who has a very poor sense of smell I actually enjoy eating the somtam with the smelly fish sauce, but I have got some friends who say that if I could smell it that I wouldnt eat it.
My wife also mixes up some chilli, garlic and the offending sauce with a small fish from the sauce in a bowl and we dab that with sticky rice and eat this as well.

My brother in law works on construction sites building metal roofs. Same sort of the thing with no protective mask. I was watching him work one day and saw no mask so gave him my UV protective sunglasses. I was the best thing since sliced bread for ages after that.
A couple of years ago after watching family members and also workers on our farm using the brushcutter without protection for their eyes, I went to the local hardware and brought about 10 pairs of protective glasses worth about 60 baht each. After that every time I saw someone without glasses I quickly insisted that they wear them. Hopefully the message got through to them. But I doubt it!!

Sounds like you approached this application with a lot of thought and preparation. Well done and good luck for the future for your and your g/f

G,DAY,
IF YOU SUBMIT THE APPLICATION IN BANGKOK OR ANY OTHER COUNTRY THE FEE IS $1390, BUT IF YOU APPLY IN AUSTRALIA THE FEE IS $2060 . I KNOW AS I,VE RECENTLY APPLIED FOR AND WAS GRANTED A SPOUSE VISA FOR MY WIFE .I WEIGHED UP THE PRICE DIFFERENCES, DECIDED THAT IT WAS EASIER TO DO THE APPLICATION IN AUSSIE AS MY WIFE WAS THERE ON A TOURIST VISA.
CHEERS N BEERS,LESDUNBAR
PS PLEASE EXCUSE THE CAPS AS I HAVE SEVERE EYE PROBLEMS
We applied for the visa for my wife and kids in BKK but I paid the fee at the immigration office in Canberra and I paid the amount of $1390. If you apply for the visa while your wife/gf is in Oz then you pay the $2060 fee.
Maybe its because the immi officials here get a higher salary than the employees at the embassy in BKK

Probably the best festival that I have been to during my time in Thailand and seems to be getting bigger each year.
Enjoy

Good idea about a change of heart. Not much to do around there from what I have seen. I have a mate who wifes distant family come from there and there doesnt seem to be much there. Good move to try and find a place in Ubon. Maybe if you can contact Richard at the Wrong Way cafe about possible houses to rent. He seems to have his ear to the ground.
