  1. When I lived in Singapore I used to buy Baby Kai Lan a lot, taste almost like spring cabbage in the UK, but have had problems finding it here. Have recently found what they call "brussel sprouts" in the packed veg section in Tops. looks like about 10 small cabbages in a tray with a "My Choice" label. Not bad but tend to be a bit nibbled! Suppose that might mean no pesticides!?

  2. Yes Adammike, the Orioles we used to see near our apartment in Singapore had a very similar call but I have yet to spot one here. Wiki describe the call as a " fluty iwee wee wee-leeow" which doesn't seem to match.

    The squirrel?!

  3. Don't forget that the "Indian" food you like is probably a westernised version of real Indian food, as is the the "chinese" food you like not really Chinese!

There are, however, quite a number of Thais with Indian heritage, though not as many as there are with Chinese ancestory.

Most Thais are not keen on Indian food, it is true.

The Grill of India, just North of Chiang Mai Gate, does some pretty good stuff.

  4. UK Building Regulations 2010 ( Drainage and waste disposal ) state that any soil pipe vent within 3m of a window must must terminate at least 900mm above the eaves.

In Thailand they quite often get around this problem by not venting the soil stack at all.

I moved into a new apartment about 4 years ago and found they had adopted this solution. It took me three weeks of explaining to the building owner and his architect/builders what a vent stack was and why it was required. Needless to say that WCs were were subject to syphonage throughout this time and there were quite a few complaints!!

After a couple of TT (Typical Thai) attempts to retro fit venting they solved the problem, but basically they have no concept of the requirement or the reason behind it, just as they don't colour code electrical wires half the time, or earth systems.

All part of the joys of living in the LOS!!

If you don't like it..............on yer bike!

  5. They're selling the new bladeless Dyson fan with air filters at Festival now. Nearly 30k but might be worth it if you have problems with the atmosphere here, and very quiet with programmable swing.

    Thinking about it!

  6. I used (in the nicest possible way)  the young lady on the upper floor of stardome a couple of times. Did not try to reinvent the wheel but brought me back from horrendous to better than as bad as I was before!

I think only a golfer would understand that!

Sorry, out of country at the moment so cannot give name.

    Vegemite

    Marmite

    per serving (4g)

    Sodium* 0.2g
    *Equivalent as salt 0.5g

    Protein 1.5g

So looking at the facts Marmite is worse for you than Vegemite in terms of the salt, which as we all know in theory should make it tastier. Just one teaspoon contains nearly 10% of your recommended salt allowance!!!

I'm in UK at present and spotted this in a store:-

No doubt the Aussies will make one for Vegemite........but with fewer pieces!

  9. I would be very reluctant to offer medical advice to you, however I would advise you seek impartial medical advice by consulting an independent general practitioner as to the best way forward. I go to Dr. Morgan at the Health Care Medical Clinic on Hang Dong Rd. I think this better than approaching a hospital direct as they are, after all, very commercial operations.

    Good luck.

  10. I think this a general problem for foreign products, especially in asia, though I have seen it elsewhere. Once I couldn't get V8 for 3 months anywhere in Malta!

The importer gets a container of, say, PG tips, into Thailand. Great, we have a supply of PG tips.

When the container is empty we have to wait until the importer orders and receives another one.

In the meantime we suffer a dearth of whatever product is temporarily depleted.

There is a function in the retail indusry call merchandising. This ensures that goods are ordered from suppliers in a timely manner calculated fom the rate they are sold and level of stock and requires a certain amount of foresight. A function significantly lacking in most asian cultures

IMHO this is the cause for most of the laments we see on TV posts about "why can't I find any xxxx" in the shops now, and the reason you can find some things in some places and not others is essentially due to the being in low demand areas.

Maybe TV readers could take this explanation on board and just accept the fact that it's going to be like that sometimes rather than clog up the website with a load of meaningless drivel about missing teabags!

    Ah! That feels better!

Vegemite was developed by a chemist looking for a way of disposing the spent yeast from the main brewery in Australia.

Sorry, Vegimite was developed when Marmite supplies to Australia were disrupted after the second world war.

Marmite was "discovered" by a german by chance by a German scientist called Justus Liebig. The Marmite company was formed in 1902.

Which one is best depends on which one you grew up with, and there are a number of similar alternatives around the world.

No one has ever reported not being able to get a recently permit at the airport... be prepared by bringing a completed TM8 form, 2 photos, copy of passport page and 1,000 baht...

Add an an extra hour at the airport to sort it out...

Last time my wife did it (a couple of weeks ago) there was no problem apart from them wanting a copy of ALL passport pages. This was done at the  post office downstairs.

    Is this standard?
