Currently my solar system produces more power than I can use most months but due to PEA’s stupid rules I am not allowed to sell my power back to the grid. New MGs and BYDs come with V2L which would give even more people the opportunity to share power back at times of peak demand helping to flatten the demand curve. Also remember that the more EVs there are in Thailand the cheaper fossil fuels will be.

I discussed the size of pumps in the first video - did you watch it? Pump 1 - backup for my rainwater harvesting system for household water - 350W 30m - now 5 years old Pump 2 - installed at my local primary school 300W surface pump bringing water from a pond to water the school veg garden (see second video) - now 5 years old Pump 3 - 350W 30m first drip irrigation pump covers about 200m of main line PE pipe with drip irrigation about every meter - now 4 years old Pump 4 - 750W 50m second drip irrigation pump covers about 300m of main line PE pipe with drip irrigation about every meter - nearly 3 years old In total 500m of main line PE pipe - could water about 500 trees. I have never measured the water volume produced but you will get a clear idea if you watch the video below as you can see it in action without drip irrigation. I also discuss the make of pump - I am sorry I do not have any model numbers and I am sure they have all been superseded by newer models by now We only run the drip irrigation in the dry season about one day a week for the hours that the solar panels are in sun.

I watched the one hour launch event so you guys didn't have to. Was hoping for an official announcement of which BYD cars were coming to Thailand, but we didn't get to see any cars. Seemed to be more a launch of the official distributor BYD REVER. They did say that they will open 30 dealerships this year - but didn't say where, so probably mostly Bangkok based.

Lots to unpack @Sophon but a few points to start with: I purchased the panels locally and imported the inverters and batteries so I wasn't gouged with a big mark up. I then got a local team I had used before to do the install. I have a friend who wanted to do all the install except fitting the panels and my guy gave him a reasonable price for that. Regarding the EV I would recommend going for the free wall box that comes with most EVs in Thailand as that will give you a 7kW charging speed. It will mean a 10kW or 2x5kW inverters but it does mean that you will be able to dump your maximum solar production into the car in the middle of the day and avoid curtailment.

One manufacturer we have not talked about much here in EVs in Thailand is Mercedes Benz. So when a dealership brought cars to my local Robinson I asked the dealership owner about what EQ cars he had - none! To understand EVs from MB it is best to look at the UK website. EQ means electric and cars range from A to X ascending in price. Currently MB imports some whole cars and assembles some in Thailand, however MB is building a factory to Manufacture EVs in Thailand, but for some reason they have decided to start with EQS

I have three Growatt SPF 5000 ES and I can recommend them. The app is great. My 20kW of PV means that I was never going to be allowed to export. My system powers my house and EV with most months no power being used from PEA. In the picture below you can see I have a 4th inverter which is connected to my original Deep Cycle Gel system. I have an ATS which allows me to use my old solar system as “Grid” (Power sources in order: Solar; Battery; Utility) and then switch over to PEA.

Thai EV forums are talking about a substantial price cut for the Nissan Leaf in Thailand. I am not sure that the rumors are true as the official website is still quoting the original price, but with the new model Nissan Ariya coming to the market soon it does make sense to clear the old stock. https://en.nissan.co.th/vehicles/new-vehicles/leaf.html# https://www.nissanusa.com/ariya.html In 2018 I attended the Bangkok motor show to look for an EV. Back then choices were limited but the Nissan Leaf was available. At 2 million Baht it was twice the price of the same car in Europe or America and even then I was not impressed with the specs. A 40kWh battery is small compared to most EVs. CHAdeMO charging connectors are a rare site at public charging stations. No active cooling of the battery pack when the car was going to be used in the tropics! Inside the car looked dated with the CD radio, it looked more like a Suzuki Swift than a modern EV. In 2019 MG released the ZS EV and after a test drive I put down a deposit on that instead. So if the price reduction is real, does the Leaf make a good value choice? In my option, no. You would better off buying an MG EP with your one million Baht.

Thailand is a great place to combine Solar with an EV. Last month I powered my house and my car 100% from solar. One of the problems with my current system is that I have to monitor 2 apps at the same time. One for the car to check the state of charge, the other for my solar system. During the rainy season in Thailand we can quickly go from bright sunshine to dark clouds with no warning and I can find myself running my house batteries down or worse still using PEA to charge my car. A better system is a smart charger that can be set to only use solar to charge the car. Unfortunately these smart chargers have not been available in Thailand, until now.

This has been discussed a couple of times in this topic. Condo charging is not a thing yet in Thailand, but if it can be done elsewhere, then it can be done here. If the condo building can make money selling electricity at a premium to EV owners, then it will happen. Installing a power outlets with RFID controlled access and back office recharging software would be the way to go.

As I continue to research my next EV in Thailand one factor that I consider is very important is whether the car is suited to the climate in Thailand. Now that Tesla has registered to sell cars in Thailand I have added the model Y to my potential next EV, however I am concerned about its expansive glass roof. Tesla does claim that a 2% tint film is combined with other different types of films that reflect solar radiation. However, I am always on the lookout for customer real world experience, so I was concerned to see this video from the UK

Agreed, figures are just for Vehicle registrations, once production ramps up we will see the numbers rise dramatically.

If you look back to some of my earlier posts you will see BMW and Tesla will be selling EVs in Thailand they are made in China.

It is a reasonable assumption that this will car will also be available in Thailand.

At the start of my build I installed a solar well pump to provide water for the build. My house now has a rainwater harvesting system but I kept the well pump as a backup. It keeps 4 tanks filled with a tank sensor telling the pump that the tanks are full, being powered by solar it only fills the tanks when the sun shines. I have AC pumps that move water around the house, but they are powered by my whole house solar and battery system and run 24 hours a day.
