  1. A prime minister with no international relations decorum ...a disgrace ! Using words like shirt front ? Putin has a black belt I am unsure what abbot has besides understanding Aussie Rules footsie

Just like the British Cameron who shot his mouth by asking for a creation of a separatist parliament in his own country by alienating the Scots

Whatever happen to manners this days ?

Shooting down a civilian plane is REALLY bad manners.

  2. This is border runs and a drop in the Chinese no cost tours.

Hardly real tourism or something that should be targetted anyway.

But, people say places seem empty. So is this even a real number?

The area I live in Phuket is very empty. I know it's not quite high season yet, but I haven't seen it this empty at this time of year, for a long while. I rode along Rawai bay the other morning and there was a bunch of about 30 tourists being loaded into two boats for a trip to the islands. The other 20 odd speedboats were just lined up along the beach doing nothing, as were long tail boats.

That might be due to hits on the Russian economy.

  3. Prices in this thread are quoted in dollars because USD is the currency used in Cambodia; this is not some American-centric plot to distress Europeans. I'm from the UK but the international currency is the dollar. Most of the currencies in this region are either tightly or loosely pegged to the dollar, I get paid in dollars, and the currency of the country I live in is the dollar - why would I convert to GBP or Euro?

True. ATMs also give out dollars.

  4. The street vendors are something that many tourists seem to love. On one hand the nation is pleading, rather unsuccessfully to date, with tourists to come back, and on the other they're removing the sorts of things that make Bangkok so attractive to a large percentage of those that do come here.

Tourist don't really come here for crappy market stalls, and even so there will still be plenty left

Actually that street is the best place to buy Buddhas.

  5. I wonder if bank managers or some bank staff / local area bank managers or officials are trained in this matter and whether they are required by bank standing orders to regularly inspect ATMs or ATMs in more at risk areas for any tampering.

In fact IMHO banks should have a legal responsibility to be checking ATMs for any interference.

I'm pretty sure ATMs are "restocked" and checked on a regular schedule. They wouldn't just be plunked in place and left to fend for themselves for weeks or months on end. But presumably the skimmers are aware of this and quite capable of installing their equipment just after a routine inspection has been made.

On the other hand, it's all the more important for ATM users to choose locations where fiddling with an ATM would be less likely to occur. Nothing is 100% safe, but if it's attached to a bank building or inside a mall with some security patrols, it's probably going to be a bit safer than choosing an ATM on some dimly lit vacant street or one standing along a usually deserted stretch of highway.

I always yank on the reader to make sure it is secure.
