  1. The shit nearly hit the fan on that one then ... was it bound for one of the protest sites I wonder? wink.png

Why would protesters send it to themselves......They just cannot leave the airport alone can they...it is just such a juicy target to ratchet up the mayhem they need so badly....And in some way one cannot blame them....They got away with messing around at the airport last time......It worked last time and now....Today they got photo's and media attention...

Well, I was being somewhat sarcastic when I mentioned "protests" ... are you suggesting it was something to do with the anti-Govt protestors themselves? To what purpose?

If indeed it was going to Cambodia, seeing as they import pretty much everything, why would it be unusual?

It's unuusual because you don't fly fertilizer, you truck it in. There are anti-gov protests in Cambodia too (against their own government).

  2. hi, this is my border of choice for visa runs so the info is current and precise.

You cannot get to the casinos without exiting thailand through immigration. In theory, you would not need to get a Cambo visa on arrival as you never get to the Cambo immigration point at the end of the no mans land strip, visa on arrival place is at the start of the no mans land strip on the right just after the bridge you cross when youve exited Thai immigration. But heres the problem. The Thais under no circumstances (and Ive tried it on many times !!) will not let you back in without a Cambo immigration stamp so youll have to get a visa on arrival anyway sadly. BEfore you buy one, there are two or three cambo police sat under a gazebo, just after the visa on arrival place also on the right. I suggest you talk to them, they are really great and do express fee ( they jump on their motorbike and stamp you in and out in 5 mins so you dont need to queue for just 200B) they might also be able to give you help and advice getting back into thailand without the cambo stamp. I would suggest you do go into Poipet though, its a nice friendly little town with a couple of nightclubs, few quiet bars and street food....no 7/11s sorry !! But im always made welcome and in 3 years Ive been going there havent been diddled or had to pay over the odds...nice people, and most speak English.

If you need any more advice feel free to email me :-)

What you say about needing a Cambodian visa just for the casinos makes sense. You are physically in Cambodia even tho the gates are past the casinos. I bet the casino hotels require the Cambodian visa in order to check you in, so if you are staying at a casino, do not get stamped out of Cambodia right after you get the Camb. visa. Get stamped out after you check out of the hotel. I have a one-year for Thailand with multiple re-entry, so no problem on that side.

  3. Is there a hotel at the casino? What's the deal there?

The casinos are all hotels. Ones I checked like Diamond and Tropicana are 1000 baht/night and you get 500 baht in promo chips (they must be played, can not be cashed out). The Star Vegas is 800 baht with 400 in chips, and hey should have a swimming pool finished next month.

The first 2 mentioned here require you to buy 25,000 baht in promo chips on Friday and Saturday nights, and you get a free room. These chips must be played not cashed in. THe Diamond does have a small hotel next door if you don't want to buy so many chips, called the RCA Inn. It is 500 baht and has TV with 3 movie channels, fridge, hot shower. The room is differnet than the casino in that the walls are bare and the shower has no glass wall. Near this hotel are laundries and internet and fruit and shops.

I did not look for ATMs in the casino strip - are there any there? In Poipet?

  4. as i recall exiting cambodia at Poi pet

    Leaving Cambodia

Cambodian immigration is on the right hand side you clear and walk across the street and enter the buliding for thai immigration. IF ur driving a car ( as i usally am) u leave ur car in the center of the road an after u clear thai immigration you need go back to no mans land and get ur car to drive it to Thai cusotms ( also in the center of the road)

Exiitng at Pailn the Casinos are on the riight hand side than immigration, on the left hand side, Walk across the bridge an thai immitgarion is on the right hand side

Nope. I was there this month, the immigration posts are a long block apart, the casinos are in no-mans-land. This photo is looking towards Thailand from the strip.

  5. thai's get 15 day visa exempt for free for Cambodia,

the border pass is only for those without a passport

    Casinos are PAST immigration

The casinos are before the Cambodian immigration, so no Camb. visa is needed. I don't know if Thailand will stamp you out if you tell them you are just going to the casinos. I have not been that way yet.

When I came from Cambodian side, they did not stamp we out, so I could go back and forth to Cambodia if I wanted. I ended up staying in the zone, the Diamond Casino has a nice restaurant Chillax, good western food, see some reviews of hotels on tripadvisor.

Blackjack is only 100 baht/hand. Thais mostly play Baccarat and fan tan. Everything is in Baht.

  6. The majority of road accidents in LOS is due to a lack of "cognitive reasoning" and "common sense" in the gray matter located between Thai ears.

    Nope.

You generally get all the safety you can afford... Putting it down to "cognitive reasoning" is pretty racist, huh?

The vast majority of the carnage on Thai roads is due to economic conditions that put so many Thais on motorcycles- which are 20-30x more dangerous per km than a car, and (almost) infinitely more dangerous than walking.

A little poorer, and they'd be riding bicycles or walking. A little richer, and they'd be riding in their own individual seats in cars with seat belts fastened.

Nothing the least "racist" in my post at all, other then in your mind. Simply stating well known facts. Anyone who has been in Thailand for any length of time is well aware that cognitive reasoning is simply NOT a strong point with Thai in general. They think only of themselves, and only for the moment. For the most part, their concept of "the future" only extends until "tomorrow". How many Thai have you ever known that actually admit that something is their fault, or apologize for anything? In over 6 years of living here, I've yet to meet one. I've had construction workers who show up at my house, 2-3 hours later than they were scheduled to of course, and then have to borrow MY tools to do a job for which THEY should have the tools for.

And I completely agree with terryp in regards to what he wrote. In other words, they don't THINK, only act without thinking.

And a Thai lady with a 4th grade education can take a university educated western guy for everything he has, and send him packing with nothing.

That's because the man is thinking with his small head, doesn't mean she is bright, just cunning.

  7. What type of tax?

    Refund interest tax.

Do you have your tax ID # yet? I got mine with copies of retirement 'visa', proof of residency, one of my bangbooks with tax taken out.

After that I went to my bank and got forms filled in showing tax paid. I did 3 years at once - 2011, 12, 13. Need copies of each bankbook and all pages showing the tax. And copy of passport again.

  8. NomadJoe - stop trying to make excuses for the Thai police!

These tourists were passengers on a bus from Samui to Phuket. As they were stowing their luggage into the bus in Samui, the co-driver stood right behind the male tourist who had his wallet in his back pocket (not an ideal location). After getting onto the bus, the tourist realised some time later during the journey that his wallet was missing.

Yes, this was technically theft, (as opposed to highway robbery), but let's not quibble about semantics.

The passengers got off the bus at the north Phuket bus stop, right by the Highway police station and tried to stop the bus from leaving. The police officer at the highway police station refused to hold the bus with the co-driver. At least they could have quickly searched the vehicle for the wallet.

A good samaritan Thai called 1155 on his mobile phone, but the tourist police on 1155 refused to help at all.

NomadJoe, I believe you are also a TPV and you shoulld be ashamed of yoiur attitude! If only the TP would get off their lazy backsides and LOOK AFTER our tourists, and treat what you call as a simple theft with the seriousness that it rightly deserves, then maybe tourists would start to sing the praises of the police.

As you say, the TP are not a free taxi service, but thank heavens that there are good Thai people who do provide this service when tourists are in distress.

IMHO, the TPVs and TPs and Royal Thai Police should treat ALL crimes against tourists with the utmost priority, whether it be a simple theft or a more serious crime. You should not dismiss a crime just because you consider the amount lost to be too small, or the chances or making an arrest low etc.

    Simon

PS - Maybe you think my attitude rather strange, but I run a service business (hotels), and I understand that the customer is ALWAYS right, (even when they are idiots). The tourists are 'customers' of the TP. Look after your customers and your reputation will greatly improve. Treat your customers with disdain and you will surely reap your just rewards.......

Maybe he dropped his wallet. It should have been secured better.

  9. Well, that is the problem. They tell you that they fly from Utapao. That is what they told me too. And I booked the flight and paid for it. Then the day before my flight they mailed and told me that the flight was with Angkor Air from Suvarnabhumi. So, what they tell you is not true!

Well I believe you since it is run by Russians now.

  10. Ironically, the day after reading this thread, I happened upon a tourist and his wife would have been walking around for hours as they couldn't find their hotel.

I insisted that he let his wife sit and wait whilst I took him around on my motorbike. We found it, eventually.

Seems that in some peoples' brains little more than the vegetative systems can be sustained...

This thread is mind numbing... and somehow hilarious too.

Could the two threads be related?

    http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/696842-russian-man-arrested-with-marijuana/

    These were just normal tourists(Indonesian).

The hotel was booked at the airport at one of the booking agents situated there.

They arrived to the hotel, dropped of their luggage, including the receipt from the booking agent and then they immediately went shopping exploring. Prior to leaving, the husband detached the identification part of the key tag to leave in the slot that activated certain functions in the room, as he wanted to leave the aircon running whilst they were out.

So the scene was set. It can happen.

So the husband detached the identification part of the key tag to beat the automatic turn off of the A/C and we are in some way supposed to feel sorry for their plight. The OP's friend was just dumb, this character was just plain cheap

Why is it cheap to leave the air on? The room costs the same, and it will be cool when they return.

  11. The lifts in D block (only one working sometimes) are a pain especially if on higher floors. They have had problems for months now. People having to walk up 10+ flights of stairs to their rooms. Don't be fooled by reports saying they will be fixed in a few days - they have been saying that for months.

Both lifts were out for 3 months. Now they are both down again. I'm on 3 so no problem. Stairs are good exercise!

Rumor is the manager got cancer and left for treatment, taking the condo money with him.

No construction in back yet, the workers are still camped there.

  12. Haha… very amusing. I take it by this as you consider us to be “pretentious chinless chattering poncified middle-class…types”? If this is the case, you assume a lot.

Going from experience, people who tend to write rambling adjective stuffed rhetoric usually fit right in that pigeon-hole.

You have the right to your opinion, as I do to mine.

However, my original post wasn’t aimed at you or any “individual” personally. I didn’t set out to be abusive rude or insulting to any individual on the forum, unlike you that is. My “rambling adjective stuffed rhetoric” as you call it, was an honest attempt to recount our holiday time in Pattaya. I wasn’t throwing out curses or personal insults in any way shape or form. If you think I was rambling, don’t bother reading it. Sometimes people like to express themselves clearly, and with form and maybe just a little wit. Some folk even like to read more than just one liners, we don’t all like comics you know.

It’s funny how most all of the comments have been good ones, constructive, even questioning. Apart from yours that is, which is nothing more than a sarcastic venomous attack, One that was neither asked for, nor required.

Next time try Laos, lovely people. Luang Prabang is great.
