  1. There is a limit to tourist visas. You could be turned away at immigration on one of your return trips id you do not have a legitimate reason for being here. Government is cracking down on serial tourists. Unless you are legally working or retired with proper visa, don't expect to be allowed in and out too many times.

  2. News Break!!!!! Thailand is not Disney World. It is a real place with real problems. People who moving here expecting paradise and everything will be fun and games should move to pattaya and line up at the balcony edge. If you want to live here take the good with the bad. Multiple flights each day going home if that's not acceptable.

  3. "My coworkers and I laughed it off."

This shows your attitude towards Thailand in general. Anyone who has been here longer than a day knows that the Thai Royal family are highly revered and worthy of respect. For you and your colleagues to decide you are above dragging your sorry @rses out of bed like the other teachers simply proves you have no respect for the school's request, for Thai culture or for the monarchy. As such, I'd say any animosity, real or imagined, has nothing to do with you receiving a higher wage, but more to do with your attitude which is quite frankly, lacking.

I agree that the Thais have an incentive to be there at 6am, but an NES teacher does not. There is no reason to show up at 6am unless you see some sort of benefit. If I was working for an International School making 100K+ THB/ month, sure, I'd show up at 6am with a smile on my face. Making 25k THB/ month at a Thai public school, I'd probably sleep in and show up for my classes. Respect is a two way street, but in Thailand, they have one lane blocked

You get paid what is decided by market forces, not just for being white skinned or NES.

Teachers at the International Schools have proper degrees from top universities, excellent extra-curricular qualifications in sports, music or arts and come from happy cohesive family backgrounds and are very good role models for students. Not too many of them around, so they can demand and get good money.

Teachers in local schools in the provinces are mostly with dodgy questionable credentials, no genuine interest in teaching children, probably just drifted here after breaking up with their families and take up teaching as they cannot find other work. Plenty of them around, they will be out of a job if they demand more.

This is a general observation and there may be exceptions on both sides. But your earnings should have no influence on respecting local traditions.

"Teachers at the International Schools have proper degrees from top universities, excellent extra-curricular qualifications in sports, music or arts and come from happy cohesive family backgrounds and are very good role models for students."

That's so funny. I have seen 2 international schools up close and in both cases the majority of teachers were chronic drunks, often coming to work hung over or high. The primary principle and her friends going to get high every lunch break, several teachers commonly passed out and sleeping in the street on the weekends. Male teachers sexually harassing the Thai service staff. Generally racists and petty little ass-kissers whose only real qualification was a minimal degree and the ability to suck up to the principle. There is no promise that "international school teachers" are so much better...but they do make the news more often, when deported for child molesting.

  4. Yes, there are more than a few dodgy companies that advertise there. One in particular, that specializes in corporate English, and is located in a building very close to Asok, often advertises for management positions, but when interviewed the good position "was just filled, but you would be perfect for the trash position we have". I met with them once and they wanted me to develop a complete program (for free) and submit it to them, then if they liked it they said they would hire me to implement it. When I asked what was to stop them from taking my work and finding a less qualified and cheaper teacher to do the program the dodgy grin from the director told me that was exactly what they planned. Never trust any language school in Thailand, especially one ran by 20-soemthing British boys.

  5. Does the idiot have a work visa ? Typical hippie-dippy lost foreigner who should have never been allowed to board the plane. Millions more of them arriving here daily. Full Moon Party/Khao San Road/Pai/ Koh Phi Phi good example.

I'm only wondering who the "idiot" here is? Of course were you never young. You seem to be a very ignorant person.

"Millions of them arriving here daily", But one super(self-deleted) on this forum seems to have an island username.

BTW, there's nothing written about him having a "work visa." Must be boring to sit on your Nana barstool day by day.

Sorry, being "young" doesn't excuse scaring his family, involving the embassy and poluice, wasting headlines and people's time. If you think his BS drama is just good natured hi-jinx you have more problems than him. He is either an idiot or another druggie or mental ill person whose family lets run wild, then begs the population to sort him out.

  6. The schools it seems lie to the M.of Education regarding the "NES" aspects, and of course to the parents who also pay in cases of MEP and EP programs. Budgets for such things as air conditioners and computer equipment are apparently done in advance but subject to additional requests. It depends again on how well the school is connected to the person handing out the money. My understanding is the school declares a certain number of hours taught by the foreigners and is given money based on this. Of course, days for visits the temple or sports days etc. are counted as being taught. It is never clear to anyone how the money could be skimmed off or put in someone's pocket. Too many checks and balances for that.

The Directors make far more than 50,000.Baht a month, even in small schools. I've seen the teachers pay slips and many are over that so needless to say, the Director is going to get more than 100,000.Baht a month. I don't know about expense accounts.

There are also fixed assets which need upgrades like sidewalks.

As a foreigner, you are better off not concerning yourself with all this and just work directly for the school, do the job to the best of your ability and you will be paid as agreed. These stories of not donating to Social Security etc. are very rare and without merit. The school has too much face to lose cheating foreigners

Average pay for Thai teachers in government schools is 15-18k a month. Easy to research...

  7. I've heard 800 baht an hour. Would love to know the truth. Lots of pay-offs in this racket. coffee1.gif

I've heard that not all girls at Nana and Soi Marlboro Cowboy are real girls.

And I was already wondering why some of them have such a deep voice, big feet and hands.

There's not so much real snow in Thailand, so no "bigfoot"....facepalm.gif

Thanks for yet another irrelevant post.

  8. Lots of inexperience young tourist thinking easy to drive scooter here without helmet many times can see they have no idea how to drive...... RIP for a girl.

Automatically blame the tourist on the bike <deleted>, I hate know-it all- guess- merchants, In October I was hit head on in Patong on a bend by a fat Italian riding his scooter on MY side of the road, accidents can happen anywhere anytime, and BTW I had never up to that point had a bike to Vehicle accident in 43 years, and always wear an helmet .

Doing a u-turn and pulling in front of an oncoming vehicle is most likely the bike riders fault. But thank goodness it wasn't a fat Italian involved or you would would really be upset.

  9. I commute daily from Bearing to Asoke. The Asoke end is insanely crowded during a couple 2 hour blocks each day. The bikes made the commute even more crowded and miserable. The planners of this event did not consider the trouble because the Hi-So people (who planned this) do not use the BTS or MRT. But in reality, it was only one day and is done. Not worth ranting about now.
