I think it's safe to say that many of these stories have a lesson an inherent lesson.

If you're booking a hotel in low season, where you know the occupancy is going to be low and hotels are going to be easy to find, you book two or three nights, see how you like the place, knowing you can always extend it and get a good deal.

Life can be so simple sometimes when we try not to overcomplicate it.

That's another point. Who would book 2 months without knowing the area or the hotel?  With a Cabaret around the corner, this is not a quiet area.

An interesting pooint though is tht they are nly registered with booking.com. It seems they do not qualify for Agoda

Something strange about this whole story.

Sure, the booked accommodation (which was eventually refunded) was unsatisfactory, but nothing prevented this guy from booking a few nights in a cheapish hotel, rent a motorbike, and then shop around for a better deal while on-site..

Consider that this is Brit that is supposedly ripped off.  How many newspapers are usually trumpetting these things?  Only hearing crickets.

Also consider that looking at reviews there are a few that are recent and good.  If you google you can see what the hotel looks like.

The bottom line is that there is not alot of noise being made anywhere but ASEAN now.  There are no dates.  You can not tell me that there were not hotels int eh area cheaper than

The next point is that  "I got off the plane in Thailand and followed the map to where the hotel should be and it was just a small market stall - it just didn't exist. I told Booking.com that it didn't exist."

It does exist and that is definitely not a market stall

Possibility is that the taxi did a runner on him the first night but still someone should have done some checking.

Also Booking . com, I am sure, had hotels that were a lot cheaper than he could have gotten into to get settled.

Sorry, but the more I read, the more I think this is B.S.

I am wondering how long at Le Lek reads this they will be hiring a lawyer and going after Booking. com.

Due to the nomination process, the Senate will likely be controlled by the conservative elite. However, as I understand, the new Senate will not elect the PM any more.

I hope you are right, but even if they do, there are going to be few of them, and I suspect fewer military people, although there may be a huge group of Thaksin fans.

Thai immigration dropped the ball. They let this guy in with somebody else's passport and kept renewing his visa for 27 years.

You can't fault Thai immigration, considering that when you get the visa, all you need is a valid passport and picture.  I was just wondering at that time if they had the pages laminated. Changing the pick would have been a possible issue.

Again the only issue saving him seems to be that the real Peter Smith never travelled.

Im just wondering what foreign tourist think they are allowed to do when arriving Thailand?

He was obviously a tourist in his late 30'ies my best guess,

You have answered your own question.

Most young and old tourists who travel to other countries leave their brains on the plane.  They seem to think me farang and I am in a different country, so the same rules that I have in my country no longer apply.

  7. I wonder if this could be due to the fact that these are the "new" lines that the government runs.  Versus the lines that BTS runs and the extensions that have had very few problems.

The challenge with the new SRT ines is that the government has their fingers in the pie and is making them build and operate on the cheap.

I don't think anyone suggests that foreign men go looking for prostitutes, it's more that Thai people think so lowly of foreigners that only women who cannot find a Thai man are interested in foreign men.  (And, of course, a lot of foreigners are older men looking for younger women.)  Not only is there the attitude of people not wanting to date non-Thais, but there is also a great deal of stigma attached to dating a foreigner, where people will either judge the woman as being a prostitute or react negatively and ask her why she is dating a foreigner, to which she might even lie to save face.

Of course, this is likely evolving a little as young Thai people begin to become more globalised due to things like internet and social media.

I agree, it does make economic sense for poorer Thais to marry foreigners in order to get a better life, but I think the stigma/objection from Thai men/Thai supremacy attitudes stops this from being too common.  This is probably the one area where Thai men might become more angry or bitter.

However, I think the fairly cavalier attitude to sex and prostitution in Thailand might negate the harshest responses, as this means most Thai men still have access to sex if they want it.

I think you are right, but I would add that a lot of the women who are mid-age are looking for someone who is stable.  I am sure that they could find a Thai man and have no trouble, but then again, in most cases, they would be lowering themselves.

In the villages, there may be a stigma but I think that gets resolved when they farang shows that he is a good man and becomes part of the community the same in the city although more and more Thai women are looking for a man that is stable and mature and that eliminates a lot of the young thai men.

  9. After being here for 15 years (wow, where does the time go),  I am taking Thai lessons not so much to learn Thai but for something to do.  I have been doing it for a month and although it is enjoyable most of what I am learning I have picked up on the street already (albeit not withthe prefect sentences.)

I alm looking forward to learning how to write adn read thai so that I understand a lot more of what is going on.

While speaking Thai is good, I agree if you live in the city, Thais don't want to speak in Thai to you. They want to practice their English.

That being said with all the paperwork and everything it will be nice to be able to ready things that I am signing and not rely on the GF

I just can't imagine, currently, educated and well off Thai men, who would be looking to pair-up with educated Thai women with good economic prospects, being in any position to be adopting a "bloody foreigners, coming over here, taking our women" kind of viewpoint.

There are a couple of facets I think we need to look at.

I do not believe in the Farang only looking for and dating bar girls crap.  I would suggest that most relationships on here that are long lasting are with women that were not part of the scene.

As has been discussed on other sites, I think a lot of young non-university Thai men realize that their other half can make more money than them working in places like NANA or Cowboy.  Also, they benefit from having GF that know a hell of a lot more about sex than most Thai ladies.

Maturity and stability come into it for many Thai women. You rarely see farang who are married with a mia noi.

Financially it makes more sense for a Thai girl to marry date a Farang than it does for most thai men

Looking at the way that Thai men treat their wives is also an issue.  again, there is a difference between most Thai men and farang in this instance.

BUT again, in the end, it is the fact that a Thai man who has been living here for a long time must have a work visa or a good retirement plan. Therefore, they have a hell of a lot better income and can buy and support their GF wives to a better lifestyle.

Yep, they said they wouldn't touch Section 11something. Which leaves only MFP as reformists, even though I have some doubts.

Thaksin is going to get hammered along with the PTP if the courts rule that MFP is trying to get rid of the monarchy.

The streets will be full of people, and instead of them asking for military rule or PTP it is going to be a sea of ORANGE.

Personally, I think the courts were stupid to take it. They could have simply said that they felt the amending of Art 112, while not possible, would not affect the people's love of the King and let it go.

Now Pita and all the members of MFP are going to become martyrs.

I think Thaksin realizes that this could be a bigger protest than anything the PTP or TRT ever had and is worried.

But, somebody already made a very good suggestion concerning the best/most-efficient/quietest fans for my box.

I am, indeed, indebted to all the good support I have received from TV members.

TV members have never failed me, in my times of need.

    Thanks to all!

    TV is a wonderful resource.

And so, I do my best to contribute, in kind, as my way of paying back for the fruits that I have been given.

NOTE:  I purchased the CPU over a month ago....  The i5-13600K....

Doesn't  CM have it's own version of the old Pamntip where it is almost all computer sales.
