  1. Back in the UK i noticed the people who had the flu shot always seemed to get the flu and bad colds. I never took it and just got regular colds every now and then.

Last year i remember it had a 3% effectiveness in the UK! Pretty rubbish but there is money to be made selling them so i am sure they will still be pushed. If you worry about this stuff it may have a positive placebo effect?

i think it's rubbish as well. never had a flu jab and haven't had the flu in maybe 12 years. i get many colds and respiratory issues here (particularly from the smog) but never the flu.

it seems people who get the flu jab are always getting the flu.

  2. has this place always been called Perns? i recall going to that location about 3 times, but a long time ago. there was a wine bar in the back corner to the left with a decent selection of wine. the food was indeed excellent and fairly priced. the one thing that put me off, and i hope this doesn't offend anyone, is that there seemed to be a considerable gay farang clientele, and twice elderly farangs were openly 'smooching', petting, and giggling with very young - (17-18ish) Thai Yai boys at the table. it really put me off.

We dine at Pern's once or twice a week and while from time-to-time I've seen older western men with younger Thai or Burmese guys (no way to determine their exact ethnic origin), I've never seen any open public displays of affection between the customers. Well, maybe some giggling or loud laughter from some of the diners, but usually that's just foreigners who have a bit too much to drink and are laughing at each other's jokes. You're making the place sound like a gay meet-up bar which it clearly is not. It's a place for good, civilized dining very welcoming for all customers -- gay and straight, male and female, couples and people on their own. All are made to feel welcome. About the only customers who would be out of place are young children -- there is no kids menu or coloring books or much to keep them interested.

i only recounted my experiences there. i never said it was a gay meet-up bar did I? only that there seemed to be a larger than average gay clientele and some behaving inappropriately. but most importantly as i stated previously, the food was excellent, staff attentive and fairly priced.

  3. I am not going to add anything here but I will tell you my experiences.

We used Chiang mai pest control for the last couple of years(the green boiler suit boys). Their charge was 4000 for termite control and 3000 for ant control............yet amazingly I think they use the same chemical. The price is for a year; but actually its 12 visits so the months November to March are stretch out for maybe another 4 four months because there aren't many ants about. I thought the price was ok, but the operatives got lazier and lazier and having told them where to spray 6,7,8 months same same; they still needed to be told.

Global treat are a tad more expensive, never used them but I have a quote from them to pipe out the sub floor of my new build.and I didn't realise they are in walking distance from our house. They are a pro set up, nice trucks, uniforms, and use animal friendly products. they do not claim to be the cheapest but they present a good image.

(anyone else used them for sub floor termite control?)

In the 2 years I used CM pest control I never once had them in the house. Yes I have armies of ants walking from A to B ocassionally; usually when we have been careless and left a piece of mango skin lying about or that cherry flavoured toothpaste in the sink. but a bit of ant powder sorts it out. Anything else is either zapped by the tennis raquet or eaten by our many jingjok lizards

The chalk I think is worse than useless, because most floors are tiled the chalk doesnt "write" so unless you start chalking all your tiled grout lines, which is impossible to wipe off then what use is chalk.

I have made my own ant killer from borax powder bought at the chemical place on mahidol road (world chemical) and after reading a suggestion by one of you guys(maybe Worgeordie) I mix it with icing sugar. That does the trick so well it seems they keep coming back for more.......or is that because it doesnt work???

like you i bought some borax (but from Union Chemical on Suthep - imported from Germany - 240 Bath for about 200 grams) based on the recommendation of other member(s) to kill cockroaches. it does absolutely nothing! the cockroaches just step over it and come in.

  4. The development of this thread has made me laugh out loud. It's entertainment. Keep it going lads.

Getting back to the food, I'm convinced from many of the comments here that the food at Pern's is at least very good. I've never been there but thank you OP for the heads up. I may give it a go in the future. One question, where do you park a car in that area?

you can park in the dirt lot behind KSK for 10 Bath. or in the underground lot as you wish.

  5. It is not the ambulances and fire appliances you need worry about it is the 'volunteer' rescue squads. They drive like maniacs, with no equipment haft the time and put more people at risk than those that they 'save. I have frequently seen them racing ton get home not to an incident.

rubbish. they are great. i have seen many in action and how they saved a guy's life in our village. i also have first-hand experience with them from my own very bad accident 2 years ago. yes they drive fast but they are very committed - all for free. i saw a show on television about a year ago and many of them in Bangkok spend upwards of one million Bath of their own money hot-rodding their engines, buying oxygen, defibrillators, drugs, respirators, etc. all they get in return is supposedly good karma.

  7. They have expanded the bakery and cake section although it is so popular for pictures ....for those living close to Maya they have opened a branch there and it's bliss at 2pm to have a nice cup of tea and cake in relative quiet

well to each their own but i found the items on offer at the MAYA Dara Devi cake shop to be so sickening sweet that of the couple of item we tried, we could not finish them. there had to have been 15 teaspoons of sugar in each tiny dessert. same with macaroons we took home. so sweet it was unbelievable.

  8. The quality of garments in the Export Shops has gone down and the prices have gone up.There is a larger store on Huay Kaew Rd on the left heading out out the city, might be worth a

look, more stock.Maybe a small shop in Airport Plaza. I think the rent was killing them in the big store they had there.

the best export shops are in Lamphun, hands down.

i agree, the quality of the garments in export shops around here has gone downhill and the prices have gone up. but the quality is MUCH better in Lamphun.

    Where in Lamphun?

there are many. the first one is 71 Export on the C.M-Lamphun Road on the left side (in the big rest stop, gas station, food court, coffee shop, etc.). past Thai Watsadu of course. better selection and much better organized than any in C.M. there are more further down this same road, then many more in Lamphun itself. coming back there is XL (i think it is called - or something similar) on the opposite side of the highway. keep in mind many of these garments are manufactured in the factories in the estates there. oh and as you leave the largest estate, the name of which escapes me (but all the locals know it) a great export shop is right there at the exit.

i might add that XL shop is not "B" rejects but first rate brands like Pierre Cardin, etc. "A" quality. (but mostly Asian sized i'll admit). XL there is like M in the West!

  9. I'm looking for some high quality door screens for a normal front door not sliding. I want them to be pet proof and care about the appearance. In the sansai area would appreciate any recommendations.

    pet proof? how so?

  10. The blue songteaws (which you can board either at Kad Luang or on the east side of the river opposite River Market) will take you directly to Lampang for 20 baht or less. Just an option. I'm not sure about trips to Lamphun or getting from Lampang to Lamphun as I've only taken the blue songteaws directly to Lampang and back.

wrong. there are no 20 Bath blue songtaews going to Lampang. nice try.

How much are cost of those blue busses by the Rimping river side?

Was interested as a day trip just to look around. do they have a set return time?

the bus that goes to LAMPHUN is purple and is cheap. i forget how much exactly. to go to Lampang there are trains and buses. the train is a nice trip. go to Lampang for a day trip. not much to see but O.K. for a day trip i suppose.

  12. apologies if this has been reported elsewhere but i don't see it in the news section.

i saw on the news this morning that now when you send a package from any and every post office in Thailand that you must produce your ID, the details will be recorded, and that every package will be x-rayed. can you imagine the delays in queues at post offices all over Thailand?

apparently there have been bomb threats.

  14. HomePro sells both the aluminum and mesh screening materials by the metre, however I found that it is about 25% less to purchase the material at a local store (Kamptien Market) and replacing the torn screens myself. I am not a do it yourselfer--but it is relatively easy to do.

this is true. even my wife has done some herself at her rental properties. there is one tool you need to buy specially for the purpose.

  15. Yes wouldnt recommend but any local shop that makes aluminium windows.

I had quotes for flyscreens in conjunction with new windows which generally were just under 500bt/m2.

But if they coming to your house to measure up and fit, I would anticipate no less than that price.

not sure who is going to waste time making them for 200bt for a door (which is 2m2) but thats ridiculous...

i agree, 300 Baht is as cheap as you will find for a door, 150-200 for a window screen depending on size.

these shops are literally everywhere, almost every village has one. where i live there are at least 3 of them within 1 km.

  16. There was also another TV show two or three years ago on an elderly, famous, I think Pattaya, katoey. She still keeps up appearances and puts on full war paint and dresses up but a wig was needed to cover a bald pate.

if it's the show i think - a documentary about his life, he lived in squalor in one tiny room in Klong Toey or one of those Bangkok slums with nothing but a tattered scrapbook of glamour photos of himself taken in the 1960's. shortly after the show aired he died alone without a single Satang. people pitched in for a proper burial/cremation for him.

this documentary was on about a year ago as i recall. i suspect many of them end up like this.

  17. There is a bike accessories shop in the bottom floor of Pantip Plaza, its nearest the road that heads towards Gecho garden (High quality and high prices). There is also another shop past Gecho Garden opposite the book shop and he sells lots of helmets. The sister shop to that one is called Zeromet and is on Chiang Puak Rd (North Gate area).

There are a lot more shops selling helmets of varying quality and price and you will normally see their displays just off the footpath on the side of the road.

Name a brand and I`ll probably be able to give you a more precise location.

    AWESOME man, I shall investigate!

    Cheers

Would very much appreciate your findings. I am really not that knowledgably but the wife just bought one for 450 baht and I am wondering if it is any good. Seems cheap to me.

    Edit.

Her driving is strictly in town no high speed highway. I think she is afraid of it. I am not crazy enough to ask how ever.

a 450 Bath helmet is a piece of junk that would break like an egg upon impact. buy her a decent helmet if you care about the woman.
