  1. Having read many of the postings on this thread, some of which are very poorly written (I hope the guilty are not teaching), I just want to ask one question.

WHY DOES BEING IN POSSESSION OF A DEGREE STOP YOU BEING UNDESIRABLE, I"M CERTAIN THERE ARE MANY PEOPLE IN ENGLISH PRISONS WHO HAVE SUCH A QUAIFICATION, GEOFFRY ARCHER IS ONE EX-CON WHO SPRINGS TO MIND?

A police background check is, surely, the best way to defeat this problem, but then not all 'undesireables' have been convicted of any wrong doing!

The bottom line should be that if there is a bad teacher in a school, fake documents or not, the school should use it's power of dismissal!

  2. a three miles' walk.

Just to confuse, I (an I suspect many others) would say "it's a three mile walk" or "it's three miles walk" (without the "a") :o

"it's a three mile walk" would be the better of the two, but i was only using it as an example for you to use in any way you'd like, you could say, "I went on a three miles' walk." or "A three miles' walk is not too long."

  3. Okay, I'm going to bite the bullet, go out on a limb, throw my hat in the ring, take a chance....and start a topic about that terrible subject that bothers us all, English grammar.

Post your questions and what you think are the answers, here, please. And please don't flame anybody unless they're a native speaker pretending to be an expert, and you've got a Ph.D. in English grammar, using flawless writen English in your posts. Okay?

Let me start with one of the three problem areas which, if written incorrectly when I was in my senior year of high school, would have earned me a perfect zero (failure) on an essay:

Its, it's. The word without an apostrophe its is a personal pronoun (pronominal adjective), referring to "something that belongs to it." Example: the door fell off its hinges. The word with the apostrophe, it's - well, it's a contracted form meaning it is. It's hard to describe.

A thing does not have it's money. Please realize that most readers will see the apostrophe and assume you've just written the short form of 'it is.'

Feel free to offer your opinion. Or ask the question. Let's make this educational, and more or less painless.

Should you say "Did you eat?" or "Have you eaten?" Is there any difference in your home country between "I will do it" and "I am going to do it"? Does it matter if you end a sentence with a preposition when you want to hang around? Will a particple die if it dangles or is misplaced? Who, me? Whom, I?

sorry mate but i think WRITTEN is written with a double T. :o

sorry about bringing that up. :D

    Two T's is correct

  4. I have no problem with its and it's because I was taught that an apostrophe replaces a missing letter. What I do have a problem with is when it's necessary to put an apostrophe at the end of a word. Is it something to do with plurals?

It's not correct to use apostrophes in normal plurals, we would write Jeans not Jean's. We would for special plurals such as MP's or The 1960's.

We use apostrophes before the possessive -s ending of nouns when there is only one of the nouns ie the girl's father or the lady's handbag.

We use apostrophes after the possessive -s ending of nouns when there are many of the nouns ie the students' magazine or a three miles' walk.

This is British Engllish, American English may, of course, be different.

    !? :o

  6. AIS have a download which automatically changes numbers in memory to add the extra 8. Trouble is it not only changes AIS numbers, but some overseas ones too, if you have them on your phone. Better to do the job manually.

There has been more confusion over this issue than there was building the Sistine Chapel.

What could be more simple than just adding an "8" onto your mobile number?

I could easily add an eight to my number but then I never need to call myself! :o

  7. I am currently broke until I get paid next week. I have fifty baht in my bank account but cannot withdraw it as the machines only hold 100 notes and up. Now I wish to spend this measly amount on a packet of ciggies but 7-11 and shell garages, of all people do not accept visa electron, very frustrating! Does anyone know were I can make my purchase and use my card?

    Thanks in advance.

    B

Not to kick someone in the stomach when they are down.....but you must have realized that you were running low on funds before your next pay day.....

and , if as you say, you are down to your last 50 baht, and have some days to go before payday, I think a lot more people would be inclined to help if you were thinking of looking for food with the last 50 baht, rather than where can I buy ciggies....

Thanks for your response. Food and drink are not a problem and I don't like the idea of asking for money to buy such shitty things

Wishing you good luck as not too many folks are posting replys to your request.

  9. HK is small... Clean, good security, great location but small, and after you add the internet (SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW) and aircon you are paying 5k for a TINY apartment.

I have a friend who is looking to rent out her studio in Chom Doi for 4000B, I was living there for 3 months with my Fiancee. But I returned home (still am) for a month and now it is free. Decent sized, big bed, internet is fast, aircon is great and it has huge windows that let you see Doi Suthep.

Also the bar across the street gives a free bottle of pipers for the first 10 tables :D

Give me a pm if anyone wants more info.

    where is this bar?

My post counter is stuck look :o at my last two posts they both have 268 on them, I have a feeling it has been stuck on this figure for a while now, why!

Oh I see now thay are all on 269 :D

  12. Thanks all for the advice... Anyone else have personal experience with Huay Kaew Residence? The PICTURES look nice... Laughing.

Ta22, Your advice is appreciated and I'll make sure to check into those things before taking a room. And, I would not blame you if I had some problem with a room you suggested. If you could give the name of where some of these decent 3-4000 Baht rooms, it would be great.

I have bee living in Huay keaw residence for 7 months now, I have no real complaints. The one moan I have is the 50B fine for locking yourselve out of your room and the extra hassle of getting in after 7 as the office is shut. my bills are never over B5000 for everything (water electricity and internet(B300)) except laundry(B350 a month). The rooms are clean and modern, I have a large fridge, a decent tv (althogh wetv is a bit grainy), aircon and hot water. There is a gym which is fre until the end of the year and a large swimming pool has just been built but is not opening until they have their license from the govt.

I have been told by one guy that they went through his room with a toothpick and charged him for any slight damage to the room but he thought this was down to him not honouring the min 3 months rent agreement. I have heard of no other complaints.

  14. Great News

Thailand should not be hiring native speaking English teachers. They should be using Thai teacher and people who speak English fluently as a second language.

The reason for this is that many native English speakers do not know the rules of the language - as they have never been "taught" english formally.

My experience of teaching kids taught by non-native speakers is that they can understand each other when conversining in English but are unlegible to a native ear!

  15. I doubt that a farang that has to finance a used one could buy a new one !

I don't recall the OP mentioning that they had to buy it on finance, he said the seller was willing to accept three payments for it, he did not however say that this was an option he was using.

If you go to buy a new bike they will also offer a finance package, does this mean you have to take it?

Please feel free to correct me if im wrong.

    CB.

Thank you, and you are correct, finance is only an option I am considering.
