  1. I am thinking of buying a second hand motorbike, what is the safest way of doing this? The bike i am looking at is a Honda stepthrough, a dream or wave, 125 autostart. I have been told it is B21000 and will be taking it for a test spin soon.

    Any advice will be welcome.

  2. Warning to flood victims: Beware of crocodiles on the loose

He advised residents to avoid walking or travelling by boat in flooded areas at night, when crocodiles are especially difficult to spot.

People have been asked to report any crocodile sightings to the department or local authorities immediately.

I think the crocodiles probably have more to fear from the hungry humans! Haven't you ever noticed the complete lack of wildlife in LOS?! :o

crocs eat wildlife aswell! also, there is plenty of wildlife up here!!!!!!

  4. From a past experience I would say go with it. I met a girl in a KSR club, i'd seen here in there and thought she was very beautiful so I asked her for phone number, I was very tired at the time so returned to my seat to finish my beer after she had written her number. She kept on looking over and seemed quite puzzled and my behaviour and eventually came over to see me as the club was closing and asked if I would like to go dancing. I declined, due to my being tired, but invited her to my hotel for some drinks. We ended up going to my room and I had an amazing time. In the morning she said she had to leave, I asked her if she wanted some money she quickly declined , only accepting some after I mentioned it was for her taxi, not for the sex.

Everything fizzled out after that, I only met her only once more, this was at a very thai disco on the outskirts of Bkk, I was the only farang. When I had arrived she was there with 10 of her friends the 100 pipers and mixers soon turned up. the mixers carried on turning up and bills kept getting pushed in my face. I had taken the precaution of only taking a little money with me, so when this had finished I asked the girl to escort me to the ATM, on the way I explained to here that I didn't think it was good that I as expected to pay for everything but was willing to still pay more than my fair share. Back at the disco I saw her paying for a bill!!! I thought this was a very good gesture on her part. The thing that did really worry me was all these Thai lads watching me intently, i assumed that they were some of these girls boyfirends, but they slowly started losing interest after a while. I had been talking to one of them in the toilet, and had rejoined the girls afterwards when he had come up to me but his hands on my shoulders and said 'welcome to Thailand' the girls look terified when he had done this but noticably relaxed after asking me what he had said.

She hadn't come with me after this night and then it all slowly finished she was always to busy studying.

good girl or bad girl, I would say good. But maye it was me complaining about the bills that put her off!!

  5. Tomorrow, I have a seminar on the above subject and thought some of you might like the chance to have any, long niggling, questions in regards to this. I have some of my own question but thought it would be more beneficial to ask a wider audience and select the best questions to ask!

  6. Instead of sightseeing, these tourists have taken advantage of the visa exemption by getting married to Thai women "for reasons other than love", and have conducted business here. Many of them have not paid tax.

Foreigners not paying tax is a big problem -- There is nowhere else to go for revenue, as all Thai business owners are law-abiding and proudly pay all taxes due already.

I hope they have and are using data to drive policy. Personally I can't imagine that lost business tax revenue comes anywhere close to the inflow of foreign money "tourists" bring with them.

  7. Look any new law or rule will have to be implemented.

The rules as they are described have no way of being implemented at airline check in desks around the world.. As such the chance of the rules being implemented as described are slim to none.

The process of checking entire passports for all entries and tallying to check 90 days incountry etc is just not feasable.

If they really do mean they will only issue 3 stamps no matter how many days in country the only people they really hurt are real tourists who pop over for bangkok weekenders or visit regularly.. Its possible to rack up 3 entries in a week or two if you are doing business around asia.

Contract workers who use Thailand as a base are the ideal people Thailand wants.. Denying offshore guys who make 15 - 20k USD in a month and often spend that much in thier off month.. Is Thailand really willing to deny themselves those working, paying, people.

    Lets see the implementation..

This is one of the angles I briefly looked at, these changes are supposed to stop illegal workers, maybe they should make proper checks of bars, schools etc. rather than castrating one of there own major industries ie tourism!!!!!

  8. I am curious to identifying the nationality of the victim of the Pia incident. The article here, and in the BKK Post, claims she was Canadian but I have been told, by someone who works within the rafting industry in Pia and a friend of the girl involved, that she was Dutch!

I can also add, with regards to safety, that the company responsible for this ill-fated excursion is the most prominent rafting business in the area. They, allegedly, did not provide safety helmets nor any rescue ropes on this trip, leaving little hope for any person that falls into rough waters! The owner of this enterprise is not Thai.

  9. Many thanks for the replies.

Is anyone aware of regulations set down by the Ministry of Education. The impression I have is that there are regs, but schools can interpret them as they wish.

Scott, the Friday sport shirt is interesting. I've heard from other teachers that on Fridays, they are encouraged to wear 'traditional' dress. In Chiang Rai, I'm told Friday is for purple shirts. can anyone expand on this?

My school requests that we wear the King's shirt on Mondays and Wednesdays, Trditional Lanna on Fridays and even that is not very strict, i'm sure you could get away with wearing the King's yellow shirt everyday and get away with it.

  10. What is involved and how long would it take to get my Degree notarized

, my school have requsted I get my visa asap. As I am in Chaing Mai it may be easier/quicker to go to Vientiane. I will go to immigration and obtain this form (TM.86) just in case this notorizing of degree is an easier proposition than I am, at present, thinking.

  11. If you were a teacher you would encounter much more of this, even the students coming into your room walking on their knees. It is not only the young that do it but also the other workers ie gardeners etc. even some of the Thai teachers do it. You can be dressed in ripped up jeans and look really scruffy but as soon as your in the teaching English section of a bookshop, all the staff will keep their heads lower than yours. All that said, not all the students do it, I think it is a part of their culture that is slowly fading away.

I personally could do without this, I find it all a bit disconcerting.
