Thanks.
I'll have a look to see if a branch is open first before cancelling. My worry is that the light fingered brigade got it and that they've seen my number, if that is the case my account will already be empty.

I need to fly from Chiang my to either KL or Singapore for a visa before the 8th May. Which destination is the cheapest? Also which airline is the cheapest to that destination.
Any other good ways of doing this cheaply?
Thanks in advance for any info offered.

I am due to start work on the 1 may and need to get my non imm 'b' visa in the meantime, which is best way to go about it. I am in Chaing Mai and my school is providing me with the paperwork. Do I need a year one or a three month one, which consulate is easier to find, what are the prices? etc etc.
Thanks in advance

Neither as both have been known to ask for the WP3.( Unless you of course have it)
Best to go with KL or Singapore. Both places will give you a 90 day non B visa.
After you get your work permit then you can go to Penang or KL and get your one year multi entry visa( if your school does not meet the criteria to apply for your extension of stay based on business) If this is indeed the case, notice I did not say to go to Singapore when you have the wp. Singapore will still just give you the 90 day visa even if you have a wp.

Thanks for the advice. I think my school is a good one, I go tomorrow to talk to them further. What is an WP3? It would be useful to no my stuff before going in tomorrow!

Jesus... I have two friends of mine going to Samui next week (women 26 and 27) and now I wonder if I should tell them not to go or at least never never wander off on the beach alone
For sure tell you friends not to wander along the beach alone at night, I know of other incidents around those islands where girls have been walking home alone from parties.

I am sure this has been asked many times but can anyone recommend decent TEFL courses in Chiang Mai, at the moment I am looking at Chiang Mai University. The course starts in December but seems a little pricey?
Thanks in advance.

I hve just come back to Chaing Mai after a year and a half away and am staying at the same guest house as before, the set up is still the same but things seem to be differant, maybe as I can now speak a little thai I know they are talking about me (good or bad is hard to tell). Also there was a robbery the night I arrived. I will go to Pai soon
Due to this I have bought a kensington security lock and attach my laptop to my welded metal bed. How secure are these locks?

I was going to warn people about buying software in panthip anyway, so this thread seems an apt place to do it.
The police are checking out the said store regulary, I recently had just paid for my cd when the police arrived, the kid who had just sold it to me panicked big time and told me to go away, I did and was follwed around the store by the boys in brown and plain clothes. I decided to return the next day to pick my goods up and the boy was very grateful of my caution.
I don't know who was breaking the law me, him or both of us, but the gathers were deffo on my case!
don't open your software until you get it home!

Lloyds TSB IN uk
You can get £500,£200,£100 cheques.
order over the phone pick up at your local TSB bank.
Commission free and are available to none customers
What I did in the end was to order Amex tc's through fx4you.com, I paid £1015 for £1000 worth of cheques. I picked them up from the airport and payed for them there, NO transaction was required on-line.
I'm a member of Llyods and upon my last visit to LoS was offered no help whatsoever when I lost company of my plastic!

But...You're better off with a Nationwide Flexaccount. You can use the ATM card to make completely free withdrawals all over Thailand at a very good exchange rate.
Thanks for the advice, unfortunately I have no time now to set up a flexaccount as I am flying tomorrow!?!?!
Or is it possible to do this in Thailand?

Banks in australia have to report any transaction exceeding 10k AUS dollars or 300k baht
Banks In Australia only have to report any cash transactions over $10,000.
What is this figure in the UK? Anyone know.

I received a phone call from a friend in Thailand yesterday it was 2 in the afternoon (7am in Thailand) the number was unavailable and the line was extremely bad, I hung up thinking he would find a better line, but he did not so.
Today I have tried his mobile number, there was no answer.
The phone line, as I have said, was very poor but I could detect an ammount of panic in his voice and hence am now thinking the worse.
The last I had heard from him he was heading down to Koh Pha Ngan for a full moon party and I fear he has ended up in hospital or, worse, been picked up by the boys in brown.
Can anyone give me any information on how to check this out.
Thanks in advance

I always thought Thomas Merton was the strangest, I suppose that depends on if that is his real name or not.
Could mean 'Thomas from Merton', Merton being in SW London!

Has anyone else seen the 2 toddlers whose (ostensible) relative begs outside BTS Asoke?
They seem to be unconscious, not just asleep. A friend told me they were dosed to keep them like that.
Sad but true i'm afraid, I have heard of this going on and have witnessed it myself.
I saw a young boy looking deeply unconsious with eyes rolling in the backs of his sockets. A concerned look to his Mother uncovered her guilt. Very disturbing.
Getting back on topic, I never give money to the child beggers as this always goes to the gang's or parents, I always give a child a drink or some food, this is nearly always consumed instantly.
