  1. Wherever the car is registered in Thailand, the cops have it in their database and can find out the owner by a mouse click.

File an official complaint with the police. These kind of bastards need to be stopped!

    thanks raro

yes they identified the driver when I was sitting in the police station but they kind of lost interest when they found out he was from a different province?

  2. If pedestrians were getting run down every other day then it might be a different matter, but what happened appears to be an isolated incident.

maybe not ever day but according to " PattayaParent " in this thread

it is neither an " isolated incident " as you put it ......

  3. Actually thai law is very clear about this, the driver is always at fault when hitting a pedestrian. This is a typical response from the police here in pattaya though, if you are not serious hurt or no property damage done they will not pursue any action. If you wanted to push the issue you need to get a layer involved.

but then to do that no one knows where it could all end because he is obviously a very violent person

  4. Welcome to the land of smiles.

Be advised that most cars in Thailand carry a weapon of some kind, from bars/ knives to guns.

" Welcome to the land of smiles. "

when I was leaving the police station

that is exactly what the police captain said to me with a chuckleermm.gif

  5. . Its the price of progress, I guess.

when you say that pedestrians cannot assume they can walk anywhere safely

and that stand a reasonable chance of reaching your destination safely

can only be in a vehicle is definitely not " progress "

  6. Yesterday in Pattaya I experienced road rage firsthand except......... I was a pedestrian!

A nasty experience which has certainly given me a new perspective about this city.

I was crossing the rather wide service road which runs along the back of Big C Extra that joins Soi Yume off Pattaya Klang when a white Toyota Camry came driving up that service road at great speed and I caused him to slow down because i was still walking across the service road before he reached the intersection.

As I kept walking he turned left to drive along Soi Yume and then drove to his car towards me at which point there was no foothpath and because I was carrying two shopping bags I stumbled onto his car and my hands reached out and hit his windows at which point he got out came towards me and punched me to the ground. He was very angry and I noticed he had a very young child in the car. He didnt actually look typically Thai... more Indian than Thai.

He then got back in his car and drove away but fortunately a couple of motorcycle taxi guys saw it all and even noted the registration number of the car. They insisted I should go to the police station which I did . Fair play the police were good actually and soon established that the car was registered in Phuket so they indicated there was little i could do.

I am absolutely amazed that in Pattaya these days you can experience this kind of unprovoked violence.

  7. Having been working for almost 20 years now in Thailand, I must agree the main problem is work ethics/morale, or general lack thereof.

Active now in safety systems for the petrochemical industry (ESD and F&G systems for those who know them), a sector which for obvious reasons need very strong work ethics, and believe me, all those big companies are struggling to fill their job openings!

And those employees who do fit the bill (yes, there are very capable local educated people around) command and actuaaly deserve pretty good salaries (6 digit Baht/monthly)...

With this I mean for example employees taking evening courses on their own time/expense for the simple reason that they crave the knowledge, and not only because they think it'll bump their paycheck!

You have to be lucky to find them...

the more I read these kinds of responses I can only wonder what will happen to so many

Thai's after the AEC 2015 is implemented because you will have Cambodians,

Vietnamese, Malaysians with far better English skills anyway and with a much better

work ethic willing and able to compete for so many positions

Will not make any difference as they will find a way to protect their labor market...

Slap excise duty on foreign labor for example, making it uselessly expensive...

but if they did that, wouldn't that force more investors to simply relocate their business

    to adjoining countries?

  8. All the needless speculation, coverup theories and other cynical nonsense here on this and the previous thread make me so very sad for the people here on TV.

Time will show that either the posters on TV are a sad lot , or possess astute powers of deduction......coffee1.gif

It's pretty well known that any search of these types of events in Thailand will come up with a ThaiVisa thread on the matter. Aside from a few inappropriate comments some idiots make I like to think for distraught relatives with no clue as to what has happened these threads can sometimes be of service. If they take nothing onboard other than DO NOT TAKE ANYTHING THE THAI AUTHORITIES TELL YOU AT FACE VALUE then the thread will have served some purpose.

we should know this here in Pattaya just by the sheer number of so called " suicides " that happen hererolleyes.gif

  10. Thai Department of Disease Control speculated that pesticide used as vermin control may have contributed to the deaths.

Meanwhile Thai forensics are the joke of the world. Downtown Inn deaths occurred 16 months ago and they are still speculating as to the cause.

There are websites that have sprung up relating to Thailand Travel Tragedies "unexplained deaths, aircrashes never conclusively investigated, murders, hotel (and nightclub) fires where fire exits were either blocked off or locked

'to prevent guests leaving without paying' the list is infinite. If the average Thai in the street only knew what the world thinks they would hang their collective heads in shame.

And now another two innocent young female tourists cut down before they have even begun to live. Don't bank on a definitive and exhaustive investigation into the lates on Phi Phi

Yes, this is not Kansas. It's a third world country, so what would you expect?

dont forget though it is the " hub " of third world countriesrolleyes.gif

  11. A friend returned on Tuesday from this location and said there were

170 people in the line !

But 80% of them were from other Asian countries.

But the noticeable fact was that Westerners took about only 20 -30 seconds at the

application window wheras the Asians took a minute or even longer for some reason.

Anyway he was number 117 and he was in line for well over 1 hour.

The collection process the next day also took him 30-40 minutes

  12. They could start by cleaning up the beaches as mentioned in another thread, the ones around Pratamnak are a disgrace

At the northern end of Jomtien beach there is a car park with a small shelter. About two weeks ago it was absolutely unbelievable in terms of the amount of waste ( plastic bottles plastic bags and other items) which had washed up on the beach. I just couldn't believe it.

Today I was there again and it is a bit better but only marginally. But while I was sitting in the shade at the shelter after riding my bicycle several groups of Thai’s came and either ate food or had something to drink and almost all of them simply left their garbage in the shelter. huh.png They don't respect their own environment one bit.

Of course the local authority is just as much to blame for not having proper rubbish bins that are emptied regularly. And the shelter itself is simply rotting away and nobody cleans it.

Then if you go over the hill towards Pattaya you will see the old lighthouse which is also a disgrace again in total disrepair with rubbish everywhere.

Before the Mayor can pat himself on the back he should first sort out these eyesores

  13. Can you meet requirements for retirement extension of stay 600k 800k in bank/65k per month income or combination to meet 800k per year? If yes retirement extension of stay would be your best option. Failing that and if you are not willing to obtain education extensions of stay (can be part time Thai study) a normal tourist visa is your best option but as we do not know how many you already show in your passport hard to judge odds - if only the two at least a single entry should be available from Vientiane and most likely another two entry.

doesnt it have to be in the bank for 3 months before the application ?

it doesnt sound like the Op has even been in Thailand that long ?

  14. That is not true -- at least in the US. A private citizen has right to a certain level of privacy. You can not go around spreading or publishing statements about a private (not public figure) that doesn't serve the public interest and that causes harm (such as embarrassment) to that person regardless if it is true or not.

    How to prove libel

There are several ways a person must go about proving that libel has taken place. For example, in the United States, the person first must prove that the statement was false. Second, that person must prove that the statement caused harm. And, third, they must prove that the statement was made without adequate research into the truthfulness of the statement. These steps are for an ordinary citizen

You cannot defame someone with the "truth".

Privacy and defamation are often intertwined laws. I don't want to get way off topic and feed in to the nit picking of what I posted here but suggest you do some research to fully understand or start with a visit the wiki page "Defamation" (http://en.wikipedia....wiki/Defamation) to better understand.

Related to defamation is public disclosure of private facts, which arises where one person reveals information that is not of public concern, and the release of which would offend a reasonable person. "Unlike [with] libel, truth is not a defense for invasion of privacy.

Keep in mind too that the law is rarely ever simple, absolute or can be summed up in a sentence or two.

what about what DiamondKing just said above your post ?

  15. In the case of Supinya Klanarong who was sued by Thaksin for defamation the court acquitted her on the grounds that the article she published information about potential conflicts of interest that she clearly believed with justification to be true and publication was held to be in the public interest. The truth is considered a defence in defamation cases in Thailand, as are the motives for making the allegations. Where the defendant is found guilty the court has to take into account the damages sustained by the defendant.

Without knowing what the dispute was about I would guess that a court would probably throw this one out, since the alleged defamation seems to have taken place in a private business meeting and the plaintiff is the one publicising it himself. So there could be no widespread damage to his reputation, which is less than sparkling anyway, unless he makes a song and a dance about this. The thing has an air of intimidation about it.

" The truth is considered a defence in defamation cases in Thailand, as are the motives for making the allegations "

not according to this written about criminal defamation

Imagine you believe you are the victim of fraud or self-dealing by a local business partner. Suppose this business partner is an “influential person”. Would you raise and pursue such claims even if you were convinced those claims are true? In Thailand, private parties can file criminal defamation claims, and truth is not necessarily a defense.

    http://thailawandpolicy.wordpress.com/2010/11/21/criminal-defamation-as-a-business-tool/

  16. Completely irrelevant. You can make a private phone call and still slander somebody just as you can in a private meeting. It depends who you are speaking with and who heard the comments.

The only real difference with the defamation laws in Thailand compared to many other places is that it can be a criminal act as opposed to being restricted only to civil procedures. It has nothing to do with being able to say some thing here that you can't in many other places but rather the consequences for false statements that may harm somebody's image.

One of the main differences with defamation laws in Thailand compared to other countries is that in Thailand it doesn't matter whether it is true or not.

yes I learnt this the hard way last year

I sent an e-mail to an Australian manufacturer because I felt their agent here in Thailand

( which was coincidentally also run by Australians but under a Thai company ) was not

representing them well because I consistently had difficulty purchasing the product

in some locations.admittedly I was frustrated when I did it but

what I wrote was factual but they called me and said they were referring

the matter to their lawyers and I would be sued for defamation?ermm.gif

So it looked like I as customer anxious to buy the product was going to

get into serious trouble just for expressing my frustration at not being able to buy

what i wanted because the agent didn't appear organised.

When I looked into these laws I was astonished to find out what you can be

potentially sued for even when all you doing is complaining?

Maybe that's why the Thai culture is not to complain?

  17. they are serious offences, not like crossing red lights.

he is not furniture shop owner, probably it's just way of getting business visa

maybe he is the owner according to this

Hmmmm, perhaps they should ALL go on holiday somewhere. whistling.gif

  18. letitbe if you are 84 maybe you will know about and remember the London Gold Pool when it was claimed the US and other governments did try to suppress the gold price from 1961 to 1968. I only found out about this recently but it does suggest more and more history repeats itself.

    http://www.gold-eagl...udge052101.html

it's not only a claim, hard evidence existed to support the fact. unfortunately i have no detailed knowledge but remember it was connected with the protection of the shitty Bretton Woods System.

i bet Yoshowara would still say it is a " usual conspiracy theory "rolleyes.gif

Certainly if your research is based on that rubbish gold bug website link.

Produce for me a peer-reviewed academic research paper from a decent institution and I might have a look at it.

Something that Bernanke (Princeton) might have covered or maybe a past paper from The Harvard Business Review or maybe the LSE. (or maybe something in the archives of the FT or the WSJ. I have subs to both)

    Not the comics you read.

Something that Bernanke might have covered cheesy.gif

    that is so funny !!!!!!!

  19. as far as I'm concerned Thailand already has a bus company of this standard.

they just don't seem concerned about marketing themselves to foreigners but that doesn't

worry them because if you just turn up and try to book a seat on their first class

journeys you will find they are always full

On most journeys they have two drivers and if you read their website you will see their

drivers are regularly tested in all regards

    http://www.nca.co.th/firstclass.php

Great info. I'd be very pleased to find out I was wrong and there is a market here for safer travel companies- even if they do cost more. I'll be looking them up next time I'm headed somewhere on a bus.

And if that's the case, perhaps there's a market for the "Lonely Planet Guide to Safer Travel in the Tropics"? You know, buses with 2 drivers, hotel rooms with smoke detectors, jet ski rentals with no scamming, and... I'd buy the book.

yes but you must bear in mind they don't go everywhere.

if your wife or girlfriend can translate this for you here is a list of where they go

    http://www.nca.co.th/runway.php

but I highly recommend them. Their buses have automatic transmission

and you will find the journey comfortable and smooth.

actually just for something to do a few years back I obtained a heavy goods vehicledrivers licence

in Australia ( which includes buses ) although I have never worked as a driver.

So I naturally take an interest in the driver's style, disposition, their driving conditions etc

Regarding NCA drivers I am always struck by their consistency. i.e.They always drive at a consistent

speed and I have never noticed any of them take an unnecessary risks.

In fact I have never heard of NCA bus ever being involved in an accident.

I try to always take NCA buses. They change drivers during the night, the drivers seem better and the buses are cleaner and more comfortable than most companies.

so do i but it's frustrating sometimes when I can never get a seat on a first-class bus.

to do so you have to book many days in advance. So there are obviously

enough Thai's who are willing to pay extra for comfortsmile.png

But even the Gold class is comfortable and clean
