British drug dealer arrested in Chiang Mai
RichardColeman replied to webfact's topic in Chiang Mai News
Be fair, I think there is far more of a link of people graduating from weed to hard drugs than there is from people upgrading from beer to hard drugs, though I can accept a link from alcohol to weed. I do not consider alcohol or wee a hard drug -
Thailand to welcome 36 million foreign tourists in 2024
RichardColeman replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
I have absolutely no idea if they will reach this target, but one thing I will say is that if they do want to achieve this figure they seriously need to sort out the immigration officials checking you into the country at entry immigration. It took me 10 minutes to get through last week, even though I have a retirement stamp until the end of May. The guy was totally confused, started rubbing his forehead, counting on his fingers, then he got the calculator out and then promptly stamped me valid stay until MAY 25 ! An entire year after I was valid for. I gave it back to him and pointed again at the date on my stamp and told him it was wrong, more forehead rubbing, more finger counting , more calculator. The crowd behind me were getting annoyed, you could see the frustration they all had after their own 12 hour flights ! So, May 2025 scrubbed out, and new correct date added. I am not saying the guy was either thick or an idiot, it could well have been a training issue, but if this is the sort of quality of officers, then the people will be lining up back to their planes at 40 million ! -
Where we might find aliens in the next decade
RichardColeman replied to Social Media's topic in World News
Whilst I may like the idea of intelligent life out there, I am somewhat of the opinion that we may actually be the most intelligent species out there. My reasoning would be that the only life out there that could be seen as ultra intelligent would be one that would have had to have survived any initial 'big bang' (my own opinion is the big bang being and exploding black hole). If we assume that ALL life starts the same with water, heat , etc and it all follows the same live of amoeba, fish, reptile, dinosaur/mammal, etc then there may well be many many planets out there that have huge amounts of wildlife but no intelligent species. Humans evolved supposedly to the most intelligent life mainly I suspect due to the deaths of the dinosaurs via meteorite hit , etc. So unless an event like this happed that mirrored our own planet.................. If, there is life out there that we could communicate with it would probably be reptile in origin and we may well find ourselves at war with them as they would view us as food, in the same way that KFC would accidentally start an intersteller war if the intelligent life out their is chicken descended -

Thai airlines soar to record profits amid tourism boom
RichardColeman replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Complete hogwash and profiteering - my return flight today is £400 more than it was prior to covid. Pure theft. Shame BA is not flying direct to atleast give the appearance of competition. They will be pricing themselves out of the market - family of 4 return flights to the UK for a holiday now is near £4,000 before you even step foot on thai soil -

Thai Airways records recovery with US$782 million profit in 2023
RichardColeman replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Wow !! Who'da thought if you raised your prices 60% and there was little competition you would take go into profit ! I'm quite sure if BA were still flying direct to BKK their profits would be down more on the UK flights ! -

Expat Tax Twists in Thailand: Navigating the New Landscape in 2024
RichardColeman replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Yes, but only if the UK does not tax it when sold and the money paid direct to Thailand bank account. If it hits a UK bank account first and CGT paid in the UK, it becomes savings and not taxable for CGT a second time. Any 'income' paid direct to thailand from a business transaction od work I think is the aim of this new law. It hits savings it will effect too much of previously taxed money and destroy the housing market. -

Expat Tax Twists in Thailand: Navigating the New Landscape in 2024
RichardColeman replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
I totally disagree - the sale of an asset is the transference of an asset into cash - it is not an income. If the Thai declare ALL income to Thailand is taxable, along with the transfering of your savings(of which tax has already been paid on in your home country potentially) the entire foreign housing market will collapse. Personally I think the only people that they will be going after are people that live in thailand but have money paid direct into a thai bank account by a company that cannot be shown to have paid tax on the income. Otherwise it is just a 10% tax raid on everybody's savings and transfers. I am in the position of having a house in the UK that I can go back to, this effects me, my plan has always been to sell my house and bring the family to the UK ,I will just do it sooner rather than later. As for those on low UK state pensions, you may as well move into that prison cell size room now if the thai government want some of your already low pension -
