We live in Pattaya, 2 bed house 10,000 baht, utilities for us are cheap as we only use air con at night. Internet is not that bad. Think this 'friend' could live quite comfortably in Pattaya if they did not go out partying or whoring ! That said, I think life would also depend on what friends overseas status is. If friend has property and a home back in their own country, then life in Thailand would be comfortable as they could basically just spend their money and not need to save anything for emergencies as they could just go home. if you have no easy home return possible then I would suggest saving as much money as possible each month for later years. Potless say 80 in Thailand would be hard if you could not get any health insurance and not return to homeland

The issue really is not the Thai baht weakening but the crazy over-inflated dollar rising due to USA debt and short term returns on USA yields. The USA stock market has pretty much been in decline since 13th September , reflecting almost a mirror image of the rise/decline Thai baht against the dollar since the same date - mostly again due to crazy returns on usa debt. Yesterday the US stock market went up a little - so I wold expect the baht to gain strength against the dollar today - unless there is more bad news on Chinese being put off by Thai gun violence

Just ban all guns outside of law enforcement - unless you have problems with rampant elephants nearby. Order them all be handed in. And make finding one in your possession a 5 years sentence and using one in assault a mandatory life sentence. There is simply no reason for gun ownership in modern and non-crazy society.
