No......from personal experience at Jomtien. I ignored the 3 month appointment (I had a piece of paper with the appointment on). I did, of course, make sure that 800k remained intact for those 3 months. Absolutely no issues when it came to do myextension.

I replied on the basis that knowledge of the fines is sufficient deterrent in itself - nobody would willingly want to pay 20,000 Baht. If someone is not aware of the overstay penalties then they must be very stupid and deserve what they get (even though detaining anyone remains pointless IMO) . Everybody gets a stamp in their passport on arrival and they know their permitted to stay date.

Nobody mentioned turning a blind-eye (1 day overstay perhaps). The overstay rules are clear and any fines should be paid. I am talking about getting the visitor out of the country asap, detaining people helps no one from a practical point of view. It is not beyond the wit of the authorities to agree a methodology of charging the fee to the home country, who in turn recover it from the individual after his return. I think it should be a home country issue and not something that the Thais have to deal with by way of detention.

Don't be an idiot - of course I do. This is not a deterrent in isolation. Everyone should be aware than overstaying carries the risk of detention if you are 'picked up' by the authorities. That has never applied to people at the airport who cough up their 500 Baht a day/20,000 Baht. If they can't do that then detention is a known consequence. That may be the case here because if he had the ability to pay the overstay he would not have been detained.

OK...it is relevant. I went on Friday to refresh my TM30 receipt. There is a recent change at Jomtien as reported in the Pattaya Mail. The article is in another thread in this section. Now, if you are doing 'any business' with Jomtien your TM30 needs to be current ie dated after your most recent arrival into the country. Any business includes 90 day reporting, certificate of address, re-entry permit and extensions. My situation is not identical to yours but I wanted to be up to date so I got my 'housekeeper (resort manager) to resubmit a TM30 online. He did that and also spoke to Jomtien Immigration who said that I would need to take a copy of the TM30 to Immigration and get a new TM30 receipt. I did that last Friday and it took about 40 minutes. Yes, Jomtien is busy but they do have improved systems. Now, you go into the air-conned building on the left to announce your business and get a numbered ticket; for TM30's it is desk 10 in the building almost opposite (you can sit and wait and the first building or go over to where desk 10 is). The queue numbers come up on a screen. Iwas 10A244 and 10A206 was being dealt with....I thought with 38 people before me it would take hours....it didn't. I think the secret is to chill out before you get there and buy into the fact that they know what they are doing. People watching is interesting because many people are clueless and only add to the scene of apparent confusion..it's OK. I found the staff courteous both at reception and desk 10, they were only surprised that I wasn't conducting other business besides getting a new receipt. Note: Desk 10 is very busy because nearly everybody has to do the TM30 report before anything else ie extensions - I saw loads of Russians having to do that.

That is a given. My point is about it being a waste of time and resources for the authorities and an unnecessary inconvenience for the Farang. IF it was simply a case of someone exiting the country with overstay - I am sure that there could be reciprocal arrangements for payment with the miscreants embassy. Surely, the Thais will want such a visitor out of their country asap. As I said, I feel that there is more to this situation than has been reported.

No...and we don't have the full story. Everybody already knows that if you get picked up on overstay you are detained. I think there is more to this story.

You are assuming that he had a flight. I didn't see any reference to that in the news report. He could have been the Russian guy who was begging when I was there in September.

It also means you have to take your wife to Immigration - which is not necessarily a good combination. Some expats think that they need their wives to hold their hand - even with a retirement extension.

You are OK with CM Immigration.. This thread was started about the Jomtien office and specifically about a local newspaper report that you now needed a 'current TM30 receipt' if you were doing any business with Immigration (ie 90 day report, re-entry permit etc). By current they mean dated AFTER your most recent entry into the country. That was never necessary before if you were returning to the same address.

In Siem Reap ? I have never experienced any noticeable pollution in 30+ visits, at various times of the year. February should be OK; it starts to get warmer and more humid in March -usually a degree or so higher than neighbouring Surin and Buriram provinces. The last time I was there in August 2022 it was obvious that the Covid recovery was taking time - it was a pleasure nor having hoards around when visiting Angkor Wat. Just go for it - any possible pollution can be mitigated by glasses of Angkor beer @ 50c in and around Pub Street. 23 years is a long gap, things will have changed.
