  1. I bicycle every day and have a taser attached to my handlebars. If a dog starts to get aggressive, I deploy the taser which emits a cracking sound between the 2 electrodes. The dogs are startled by the noise and run away. You can get them from Shopee: https://shopee.co.th/ส่งจาก-กทม-ไฟLED-ไฟแบบพกพาอัจฉริยะชาร์จUSB09-i.1224090127.29117285707?xptdk=b95fe6e8-a79a-44de-b9ad-f6fdbdefa16e
  2. If I remember correctly, there was a report that the fire exits were locked to prevent guests leaving without paying. Some poor Korean guest had recently got married. He was not in the hotel when the fire started but his new bride was and she died.
  3. Over the past couple of years, I've had 4 basal cell carcinomas excised and am treating one on my my nose with Aldara cream. I've also had lots of actinic keratosis spots burned off. I go to the dermatologist every 6 months and also apply SPF 50+ cream every morning and every time I go out on my bike (which is most days). When I'm biking, I wear a mask, a broad-rimmed hat, UV-protection long-sleeved cycling shirt and gloves.
  4. Well done. I should have done citizenship years ago when I was working (been here 35 years, married for 34 years) but I did PR and left it at that. Don't need to own land, work again or vote, but it would have been nice to have a Thai ID card and passport!
  5. Having lived and worked in Thailand for 35 years, I have formed many opinions on the Thai education system and the benefits of a university education. When I was the MD of a Bangkok office in the early 1990s, we needed well educated English-speaking graduates who could deal with foreign clients. These graduates were usually from rich families and were educated abroad and therefore pretty fluent in English. Unfortunately, they lacked the "hunger" to do a good job because their families were so rich, their job was just something to do and if they didn't like it, they could return to the bosom of their family without suffering financial hardship. The keener employees were the ones who had got their degrees in Thailand, but the downside was that creative thinking, intuition and problem-solving had been bullied/educated out of them. However, they were very receptive to training and were delighted that the company took the time to help them without the fear of being bullied or humiliated if they made mistakes.
  6. Very disappointing. I've used Food Panda for many years and like it's web-based ordering, Now I'll have to download the Grab Food app on my phone and learn how to. use it!
  7. Sounds an unlikely explanation from the driver.
  8. My mistake...withholding tax on bank interest is 15%. it is withholding tax on dividends that is 10%. The figures I showed are the rates SCB is currently offering. The 1.90% I got on my fixed deposit is the rate SCB was offering 5 months ago. Since then, rates have decreased, hence the lower rates currently offered.
  9. I have a 6-month fixed deposit with SCB that pays 1.90% pa gross = 1.71% pa net of 10% withholding tax. The current gross rates are as follows:
  10. Thailand is doing well in the race to attract the bottom of the barrel.
  11. Thought as much...thanks.
  12. I am in the blue book at our house in Bangkok (I have PR and so must be registered in a blue book). I own a condo in Hua Hin which has a blue book in the original developer's name (my name is on the chanote). Because I am already registered in a blue book in Bangkok, does that mean I cannot have the blue book for my Hua Hin condo changed to my name as well?
  13. When you submit a TM30 online, you get some kind of confirmation on screen that the information has been successfully sent. I take a screen shot of that. In addition, you can search by date for TM30's already sent, which should also have the information you have just sent.
  14. Not true. My son has been a First Officer with a Thai airline for eight years and is now trying to upgrade to Captain.
  15. Yet more public money going into that money pit. THAI was listed in July 1991 at the IPO price of Bt60. The last price, before the stock was suspended in 2021, was Bt3.22. So, over 30 years, investors have lost about 95% of their investment.
  16. We've had a pool since 1996 and they are indeed a labour of love. We have a pool cleaner who comes three times a week and he's pretty good. However, there are always ongoing repairs required such as replacing pump bearings, replacing valves, repairing leaking pipes, replacing cracked/broken tiles, repairing pools lights etc.
  17. Usual bullying by those in power.
  18. Agreed. I've had such a taser attached to my handlebars for years...very effective.
  19. I bicycle every day and have a taser attached to my handlebars. The crackling sound of the taser scares away any menacing dogs, You can buy them on Lazada. https://www.lazada.co.th/products/i5251873479-s22308415824.html?urlFlag=true&mp=1&tradePath=omItm&tradeOrderId=929912400329779&tradeOrderLineId=929912400429779&spm=spm%3Da2o42.order_details.item_title.1

  21. Met in 1988. I was her first boyfriend. She's never had a drink or a cigarette and is very Buddhist. Got married in 1991. We've had our moments but mutual companionship and friendship go a long way.
  22. Bangkok Will Not Flood, PM Paetongtarn Shinawatra Assures
  23. Just booked business class to Sydney. Didn't bother looking at Thai because of old fit-outs, disinterested staff and price. Booked with Singapore Airlines. OK, it takes longer, but the experience and great price offsets the longer flight time.
  24. I remember in 1997 when the BOT tried unsuccessfully to support the Baht, which almost depleted Thailand's official reserves which fell from USD39bn in Feb 1997 to USD3bn at the end of May. As a result, the BOT was forced to float the Baht and Thailand had to be bailed out by the IMF to the tune of USD17bn.
