  1. Not only is this not common it sounds as if there is probably more to it.  If family knows where he was that evening and those who were with him I would start there as a murder is not common without a prior disagreement.  I doubt the body would have been moved from a robbery scene.

I agree. Moving the body does not sound like an anonomyous robbery. and if he was moved to another location, they needed a car, right?

(from original poster) was riding his motorbike late at night in down a quiet back road to avoid the main road and traffic in Bangkok

    How would you know that?

  2. When your DL has been confiscated, the ticket you receive in return serves as your DL until the original has been returned.  You are not forced to drive without a DL.

That would make sense, to a point, depending on the reason for their confiscation...

I was relieved of my license here about 15 years ago, for an illegal parking issue, and again about 5 years ago for a illegal turn, and I'd left my wallet at home.... I wasn't given any paper in return for my license on those occasions. It makes sense that there'd be a police policy to give some form of receipt, but has anyone else here given up their license as bond without a receipt?

Also more reason to have a 'throw-down' stuck on your visor.. :o

  3. I sure wasn't trying to suggest people never flee the scene... Sure they do. But not 'most', as was stated, I believe.

It does seem to happen fairly often, based on media reports, among bus and truck drivers involved in injury or death accidents- hey, the stakes go way up at that point, and maybe there might be more of a chance of not going to jail if you can avoid the cops at the scene for the moment.... I'm strictly guessing though, too. Never seen any published figures, either...

I've also never heard of a serious accident being forgotten about just because the driver escaped the scene... Somebody is gonna pay at some point.

In other accidents involving two or more vehicles, how is the driver at fault going to be allowed to 'flee the scene' if the victim driver can help it, without paying compensation? Common sense say that this is most unlikely to occur unless the victim is dead/incapacitated and there are no other witnesses around to possibly intervene in the escape... Though many times the two parties (not the dead/incapacitated ones, obviously) will make their own deal and go their seperate ways before the cops show...

It ain't so easy to escape responsibility for an accident here, it seems to me. The safest and best option a driver has is to stick around and do the right thing, in my view.

Not getting insurance to cover your ass is just stupid. It's so cheap here, and it can keep you out of jail or having to consider fleeing the scene and looking over your shoulder from that day on....

you have to understand something, when you ask the cop, "can i pay here" and he say "yes". you don't ask him how much, (wrong wrong) you just slip him a hundred, and he will hurry and send you on your way, i promis you he won't count the money in front of you to see how much it was, but he will focus on the amount you pull out the cash to pay him, they are very good at that.

And you have to understand that that's not always true. I have tried exactly what you said, and had it returned for more. I wrote about that experience in a thread here last year. I seriously doubt I've been the only one. Be careful of such all-encompassing statements about Thai police behaviours :o

  4. Make sure it has a " three pin " connection plug.

The main reason is that it has to be grounded to the " Earth " connection

( Green/Yellow ) colour at the top pin.  Some colour is just green.

In Malaysia it is Green/Yellow colour wire for Earth. (Compulsory by law).

Without the Earth connection........ the ELCB Circuit Breaker will not trip..........

    and you will be history.

Buy a ' branded ' model.  A Japanese branded model should be a good choice.

    Sawatdi krap.

That is completely false. A GFI or ELCB will operate properly with no ground wire. That is why they are so important here in Thailand where so many homes do not have a three wire system.

lopburi3, these things are designed to sense a short and cut the power before it can hurt you.. Do I have that right? Are there varying qualities of these circuit breakers? Do some react slower than others? Anything to watch for when buying?

  5. 3 litre engines enable cruising speeds to be maintained at low revs and that means they are working more efficiently with less stress on the moving parts and they use less fuel, and you can really blast away from traffic lights too.

Diesel engines are designed to operate most efficiently at higher rpm's than gasoline engines. Drivers of diesel engines who drive at lower rpm's will experience a buildup of oil sludge in the injectors in fairly short order. This is the reason for the huge clouds of black smoke some of these guys put out...

  6. From a safety standpoint, a taller vehicle has much better vision of the road...

From a practical standpoint, pickups and SUV's offer many more use options...

From a price standpoint, a new Pickup is usually cheaper than the equivalent new car...

From a fun standpoint, pickups and SUV's can go pretty much anywhere, anytime, and are hella fun

    What do you drive Ajarn?

    How tall are you? :D

    I have a 4-door Isuzu Pickup w/carryboy

    I'm 6'3", though I may have shrunk a bit... :o

Seriously, I did buy it partly because of it's height (safety) advantage, but mostly because of the interior leg and head room these vehicles offer over most cars. Oh, and also because the Isuzu A/C blasts!

  7. i am not far off six feet and dont feel that buying my pickup is a macho thing , however as i get older and flabbier i must admit to feeling the need for something more muscle bound than myself , more a reaction to losing my youth.

Yes, unfortunately, my dream for a bigger penis by buying a big truck was not realised... :o

    Your experience may differ :D

  9. I installed one of these on demand water heaters, but it blew its guts 'cos the pressure is way too low on the top floor. So I bought a 15 gallon plastic tank/bucket, and an industrial water pump (400 baht) with a 1 inch diameter pipe. Reduced the pipe size, and connected.

    Bang! (again)

So I got another machine, and...

    Bang! (again)

Then I bought for 400 baht an element for dipping into cauldrons for cooking. Rigged a couple of lights to show when the element is on.  Rigged a simple pull switch so that the on off to the pump is operated by by a string that leads up to the ceiling and out through the wall which prevents wet hands shorting the switch. A little water pump for fish tanks was necessary inside the tank to circulate the water while heating. Whole system is grounded.

    But...

then the water in the tank was used up in 1 minute flat. So I split the water supply so half the water from the pump goes back into the water tank. And voila.... a Hot Power Shower that runs for 3 minutes. Just have to heat the water for 30 minuted first. Only disadvantage is that I must never leave the heater on for more than 30 minutes or it will boil over. For an extra 1000 baht you can buy a water pump from Klong Thom that auto detects when you open the tap and starts pumping.

Alternatively you can buy an inline pump and fix it between your shower and the water tank if it is above you (mine is waist height). Again it auto detects and pumps when you open the water tap, and that will give you the pressure you crave. I installed the electrics myself. All this rubbish about using an expert proffesional electrician.... I have seen these "experts" work on various things before. A Prince Phillip gaff springs to mind.

I would draw you a diagram if I could figure how to insert images (it only gives options for a url link to an image)

A fan of Rube Goldberg, by chance? :o
  10. ajarn...That's a good point...traffic "fines" to the local corrupt cops aren't set in stone. Phuket must be a really money maker for these guys...the more farangs in the area the more they'll try to extort from you. Some of our posters carry several expired licenses to hand over to the cops and then never bother to get them again. I suppose that would work if the cop didn't take the time to look at the dates.

Yeah, it's interesting to me that, though my Oregon DL expired more than 25 years ago (my California DL expired 10 years ago) , and my IDP expired some 15 years ago, no Thai authority has ever given it a notice... TiT. I like the 'flexibilty' here, especially when compared to the anal strictness of the coppers in the States. :o

  11. I agree with the previous posts regarding the EPA & DOT rules for highway vehicles making it impossible to bring in gray market vehicles but... I have noticed a lot of Vespas being sold in California and a number of people riding them...with tags.  The Honda motorcycle dealer in Santa Barbara told me he's bringing them in from Europe.  Any ideas how they can do this?

Vespas have been around in the States for a long time, so I'd assume they were certified long ago...

  12. For you guys insisting there is a set price, like 100 baht, for traffic offenses, you're dead wrong... Plenty of Thais pay prices less, or more, than that. The law says up to 2,000 baht for most typical minor traffic or vehicle infractions, with each station being authorized to collect any amount up to the maximum, according to published responses from the Phuket police, anyway....

On the street, cops can legally fine you on the spot... I know they're supposed to give you a receipt, but that rarely happens, in my experience, except for some places with speed traps. I've been nicked a few times in such places, and always got a receipt. In those cases, everyone paid the same (200baht) because we were all que'd up at a table and could see everything going on... Now that's the price I expect to pay under those circumstances, but I'm under no illusion that 200 baht is a set price for anything... I must say I don't mind getting nicked in these speed traps, either. They've had it all setup for the scofflaw to pay quickly and cheaply and get back on the road to continue on with your speeding... :D

And, yes, often the farang does pay more, but that ain't universal here, either. Experiences vary. :o

  13. think i will go with the Panasonic 3.5kw, electric bill is not a concern, just want a good decent water pressure and hot enought to have a decent shower

If you mean like the pressure in western showers, you'll likely never get anything near that kind of pressure/flow out of an 'on-demand' water heater... Just look at the plumbing for the hot side- much smaller tubing, meaning much less flow. The only way to get western pressure for hot water here is to install a 30-gal+ standing water heater with the larger piping...

Since they're all 'on demand', you won't have a problem with hot water stopping unless your water pressure drops to the point where the heating coil shuts itself off.. I have a 1200 liter jacuzzi in my house, and a 5,000 baht National brand does just fine. The hot side is always at max, with temperature controlled by adjusting the cold water flow, which has a much higher flow rate that the hot side. If you want higher flow, you'll probably have to lose some degrees to accomplish that...

When buying, keep service in mind if you're not an electrician. Are you going to install it yourself? If there's a problem, are you willing to take it in to the service center yourself? I'm not, so I only buy such stuff from a store that has good home service for setup and for fixing problems... In Chiang Mai, I highly recommend Siam TV & Appliance store.

  14. More taxis planned for Chiang Mai in 2005

But the drivers have to go to charm school

    Nopniwat Krailerg

In the middle of January, a taxi call center will be established in front of the Chiang Mai Plaza Hotel on Sri Donchai Road, in the downtown area, instead of at the Nakorn Lanna Transport Cooperatives. More taxis will be put into service, and training courses will be held every Sunday for taxi drivers to ensure good service, politeness, and ability to communicate in English.

n7-115.jpgSinghkham Nunti, president of the Nakorn Lanna Transport Cooperatives and Taxi Service in Chiang Mai.

Singhkham Nunti, the president of the Nakorn Lanna Tranport Cooperatives said that currently there are 13 taxis, 2,791 red minibuses and 37 air-conditioned buses.

In 2005, the cooperatives aim to launch another 50-100 taxis because the demand has been gradually increasing, with now an average of 20 calls to call center and 50 calls directly to the taxi drivers. An agreement has been made with the Provincial Traffic and Transport Committee, that for every new taxi, they will decommission one red minibus.

The new taxi services are being equally used by both Thais and foreigners, said Singhkham. The daily income after deducting expenses is around 1,000-1,500 baht per taxi. Every taxi can be contacted through radio communication.

In 2005, good service is the most important, then vehicle condition, service, politeness and ability to speak English. The Gems Gallery is supporting the company by hiring an English teacher to teach 40 cooperative members every Sunday. They also want a community radio station and the company is now seeking a license from the government department.

    To contact the call center, telephone 053-279291and 053-271242 from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

  15. Last night, I was stopped in one of these road block checks. OK I never had my seat belt on. I was duly given a ticket, but they retained my license. This is so you will pay the fine. They told me where to pay it and my license would be returned. Today, I went and paid the 200b, only to be told, I had to go to a police box near where I was stopped to get my license back. It was far, but I went, only to find it was shut. I returned to where I paid the fine and they phoned someone to man the box for when I came. I went.

It is an offence not to carry your license, so the police, knowingly made me drive without one.

The fine is nothing, and would not deter a farang, but the messing about would, so I'm wearing it now. Makes sense anyway.  :o

I don't know where you are, but around Chiang Mai, the working road checks are up a lot... Just between Chiang Mai and Lampang yesterday, there were 5.. Bewteen Lampang an Phrae, 3 more. Usually it's none in the daytime (this was daytime), and rarely at night... Speed checks, too.

Anyway, most of these places make you pay the same 200 baht there, on the spot. Did you innocently offer to pay the fine here and now to save everyone some convenience? I haven't found myself there often, but when I have, I've always said that, and it's always worked out fine for the minor stuff....

Oh, and I keep a long-expired Oregon DL on my visor for such appropriate occasions :D
