  10. Reuters July 3 : As part of the tax package, lawmakers raised the U.S. government's $36.1 trillion borrowing limit that it was projected to hit later this summer by $5 trillion – a move that will assuage concerns over a possible default on U.S. debt. Analysts had estimated the so-called X-date, when the Treasury would no longer be able to pay all of its obligations without an increase or suspension of the debt limit, could have occurred at the end of August or in early September. Longer term, however, the bill has largely been seen as bad news for the U.S. bond market and the nation's fiscal health. It will add $3.4 trillion to the nation's debt over the next decade, nonpartisan analysts have estimated.
  11. Low income recipients with SS benefit below standard deduction pay no tax anyway. Those who need it most are not getting any help.
  12. The Daily Beast: Under the megabill, seniors get an additional deduction of $6,000 off their taxes ($12,000 for couples). But that deduction begins phasing out for those who earn more than $75,000 ($150,000 for couples) and disappears entirely for those earning more than $175,000 ($250,000 for couples). The tax break also expires at the end of Trump’s term in 2028. Many seniors with low income would not benefit from the additional deduction, according to the Bipartisan Policy Center, which also raised concerns about “intergenerational fairness, since it would provide a tax benefit to those over the age of 65 that is not available to younger taxpayers with identical incomes.” A similar analysis by the Tax Foundation found that the additional deduction would mostly benefit those with higher incomes.
  13. I got the e-mail too. The tax benefit phase out for those with income over $75000 ,it expires on 2028 and only for those over 65. (info from The Daily Beast)
