  1. Some Pommies are OK, but it would be better to ban all of them just in case. Problem with pommies is that they are half Breton (pictish tribes) and half German.

Because of this they only have half a sense of humour. They can give it but they can't take it. Some pommies have a greater influence on one side or the other from their traits, but why risk letting them in.

    You did forget The Celts.

Nah, the Celts stayed up North in Scotland when the pommies bent over first for the Italians (Romans) then they bent over for the Germans. Now it's the yanks that are rooting them. The Scots have had enough of trying to look out for them and are planning their escape for once and for all in the coming Independence referendum.

Yeah, but how are The Jocks going to afford to look after all of those dole Scroungers?

Some of them are planning on returning to England.

Send them off to Australia, that's what the Irish are doing at the moment as well.

and they fit right in with the Ozzies

  3. Will Pommies be allowed into this forum?

I like the banter with our shackle dragging friends, so I think it would be good idea.

I nominate ChuckH to mod it as well, as he's got a sense of humour.

Looks like the Cambodian slaves are voting with their feet. Not like this event has any effect whatsoever on individule Thais or will change the culture of slavery in Asia. Perhaps America needs to look at its own use of slaves in their foreign enterprises as well as domestic?

The U.S. continues to monitor this and American companies understand full well that the American public will turn away from products shown to be produced with slave labor. If not out of moral outrage the companies will respond to economic pressure.

Here are some examples of American child labour, where is the moral outrage from the American public on these clips from Human Rights Watch ?. The Hypocrisy of the US and US citizens in relation to this is despicable. When is the USA going to downgrade itself. ?

I would appreciate your views on these videos, or the views of other Americans. But I know that you will not reply, you and other Americans will stick your heads in the sand.

really sorry to hear that anotheroneamerican. trust is everything. i've also seen family robbery (in the thai side of my family).

and amykat - awful experiences. my partner and I did business in India for a number of years, so I've been through similar.

to contextualise, the BF is British and brings in more income than I do, so it just doesnt make sense that he would be a suspect, even if I didn't trust him

Ok, thanks for the comments, it helps to remove any doubt that anything can be done about it. As for accusing directly - not something I would ever think of doing, no matter how sure I may be. Yeah - schoolboy error leaving cash in the room at all, should know better by now!

PS are you serious that this post can be seen as an allegation CMSteve? - i'm assuming it's under conditions of anonymity/hypothetical question. I guess you mean if the guy himself was to see it, right?

yes indeed a very out of pocket school GIRL error

I spotted that as well, she also said she is a farang girl and her husband is British, yet she has a Thai side to her family that stole from her. Very strange

And, the Chinese conduct world trade in English. How else can they do trade with dozens of countries unless there is a common language?

No child in China can graduate from secondary school and enter uni without mastering English.

Can Thais then speak Chinese and Chinese speak Thai?

English is the language of world trade. Much of the world's knowledge is available in English on the internet. Anyone who doesn't know English, and who wants to come off of the farms and out of the mines will need English.

The Chinese can't do international biz in Chinese and they know it. If you go to China you'll do biz in English just like the Germans and Italians and Spanish and all others do.

The vast majority of people from mainland Europe don't speak English, yet they are not stuck on farms or in mines.

And yet ironically, the vast majority of folks from mainland Europe or anywhere in the world do speak English to each other on this forum. Why is that? I don't see anyone positing an arrogant 'English is the superior language' stance. What has been said in reference to learning English giving one an advantage in Business and Academia (and science also for that matter) is true. It's just the way it is, to deny it is laughable, and if you have kids it's also denying them opportunity.

This is an English language forum, so if they couldn't speak English, then they wouldn't be members to begin with. But as a proportion to the populations of mainland Europe versus English speaking countries, I would say that the numbers are very small from mainland Europe in comparison to English speaking countries.

I also never said that being able to speak English doesn't give an advantage in Business and Academia, that is if they are in a position where they are involved in International business. If their role within a business requires them to interact with people at International level it is advantageous, but in these circumstances I would suggest that the individual person decides for themselves that they need to learn the language and set about doing so, so that they will be in a position to fulfill the role. The numbers of people in these roles within a company or as a percentage of the general population is minuscule.

    Oh yes we do!

How do the Spanish communicate with the Greeks you think?

But yes, we wish the British would put in some effort to learn other languages too, like the rest of us.

I would suggest that most Spaniards never have a need to speak with Greeks or other people that use a different language. I would suggest that you yourself are in a job or grew up in an area where you were exposed to English language users, maybe a tourist area even.

How many of your friends or relatives that are not from a tourist area, or never worked in a company where English is required can actually speak English ?

  9. Utley, I can partly understand what you are on about but, I would offer up an alternative … are the Thai people interested in actually learning English?

    My thoughts are generally NO.

    Indeed, why should they?

Why would they wish or want to be on a Forbes list?

There is a huge disconnect between your OP and your first post.

So, what is your take-out message.

Thailand needs better Universities so one can make it onto a list somewhere?

    or

That retired folk in Thailand can do something to pass their idle time by conversing with the natives in English?

Not that the Thais don’t have an eye for the future.

    .

My take-out message is this. "Life is tough. It is even tougher if you are stupid!"

If Thais want an easier life, one of the best ways to achieve it is through education. The Kingdom has a free, ready and untapped resource at its fingertips that it is not using; namely English speaking retirees.

Thais don't want to learn and speak English. Why do English speaking people believe than being able to speak English is the be all and end all to everything

  10. Last week I was in Indonesia visiting clients and agents there. I spent a lot of time hanging out in cars, bars and restaurants with the Indonesians and something really stuck me. We had real and meaningful conversations

one guy was telling me about his pets and how much he loves his little hamster and describing what the hamster does at meal times.

    Says it all really
