  1. When renting a condo, rent on the "Pattaya side". The sun and heat on the other side is unbearable and you will end up with curtains closed all day to keep the sun out and you will also need air con on all day.

Things to do can be different for everyone, try find something and uses up your time. Some options

Walking, take a 2, 3 or 4 hour walk daily or a few times a week.

Running or jogging: same as above and also there is a circuit near big buddah hill in pratamnuk which many people use

Swimming: swim for an hour or two every day

Cycling: The countryside is only a stones throw away and there are some very nice cycling routes that take you around silver lakes, golden buddha, nong nooch and some beaches areas like Bang saray etc. There are some cycling clubs there and always welcome new members

Wind surfing. There is a wind surfing school on Jomtien beach and you can spend many enjoyable hours out in the bay.

Pool: there are pool competitions in Rompho market, Individual tournaments and team competitions with 1 bar against the others in a league. This helps you to get to meet other expats and you will visit different bars regularly

Gyms: in the area and some Condos have Gyms on site also

  2. Jomtien is a great spot to spend a year, research a condo in advance, you can get one from 5,000 per month to as high as you like depending on budget.

It will have air con and fan, small kitchen. The air is fresher and cleaner down jomtien than Pattaya and you get less rain.

Pattaya is a short distance away and only 10 Bht each way on the baht bus for when you want to hit the bright lights.

Many bars in Rompho market area, very quiet in low season, but busy in high season

I would recommend the Ed Visa, take all the hassle away from doing border runs.

Beach road is very long and can take 3 hours + to walk along it,if you want exercise and the foothpaths are in good order, without all the clutter and noise of beach road in Pattaya. There is a fairly large expat community there also. There are many things to do there and I would suggest you find something to do or you run the risk of spending your year sitting at a bar everyday sipping beer and complaining that there is nothing to do. Go for it and enjoy it, it will give a good indicator as to whether you can live there full time when it comes to retirement.

Try get a condo with a washing machine also, when on holidays, the laundrys are very handy and seem inexpensive, but when living there full time, the laundry seems very expensive. Also ensure that the electric and water rates are at Government prices before commiting to a years contract.

  3. Sounds like a Nigerian scam to be honest, and these have been widely reported previously. Although all countries have them. It's unlikely the details tat you have are real, but still worth making a report.

Sadly, I think she has to accept the money and the scammer have long gone

I agree, unfortunately for her, I bet she doesn't the the guys details.....

The name should be correct, otherwise how did he get the money from Western Union.

Thought you have to present a passport or driving license to get the money.

As about the address, shouldn't the letter been returned to her as address Unknown?

    It's been 3 months now.

To collect the money, all that is needed is a Government issued ID. These can easily be faked

Only if she put a return address on the envelope, will the letter be returned to her if the address was fake

  4. Hate to defended the Americans. But if someone went into a police station and made a report about human trafficking there would be so many police officers and social welfare at that location. But here the Thai police would just look away or just look for a payout. Sorry. But Thailand doesn't do anything except talk so much.

America prosecutes the victims of trafficking including children, according to the TIP report

    http://www.state.gov...tion/226849.pdf

some trafficking victims, including those under
the age of 18 years were reportedly detained or prosecuted for
criminal activity related to their being trafficked, notwithstanding
the federal policy that victims should not be inappropriately
penalized solely for unlawful acts committed as a direct result
    of being trafficked
