  2. What do you mean by, "...are we now on our own?"?

How many injections are you wanting? Are you collecting inoculations? Or is it like masks: the more the better? I know someone who has had 4 injections of various substances. I'm sure if they introduce a new flavor here, he will get as many as he can. He's just a ramblin', vaxin' kind 'a guy....

  3. "You are missing the point: there are people reading this forum who aren’t getting the jab because they believe that Covid isn’t a big deal. Posts like yours only reinforce their crazy beliefs.

So how "big a deal" is it?

If you just say, "People are dying of covid," that's not getting the discussion anywhere; people die of preventable injuries on motorbikes, or from the seasonal flu or everything else (I think it's just north of 1,500 people in Thailand die of something EVERY DAY).

(By the way, do you honestly think people make real life decisions about what new injectable medicines to put or not put in their body by reading ThaiVisa?
"What about that new medicine that's come out?" "Oh, I get all my medical information from Asean Now forum board. I'll need to check there first.")

My opinion is that fully vaccinated people don’t have to live in fear, but should wear face masks where required."

For what purpose?  If you believe this, and I think you do, then EVERYONE who is vaccinated will be "required" to wear a mask forever. Covid isn't going anywhere. Vaccinated people will be around forever. So you are saying that a paper mask that doesn't even filter PM2.5 must be worn "where required" forever.

At some point you have to live with reality. We know the risk groups for this (always have) and those who are not meaningful vectors and who are at ridiculously low risk of getting sick and even lower for dying.

At my age, according to the CDC, I have a 98.9 percent of surviving IF I even get infected. I don't know how you access risk, but to most people -- and not talking about covid -- that is a very, very strong probability.

If I said that this lottery ticket has a 98.9 percent of winning the six million baht jackpot, would you say, "Oh, no. I don't want to buy that; the risk of losing isn't worth it."? Nearly 99 percent success isn't good enough for you?

If you are sitting outside, in the sun, all by yourself -- not another person within 30 meters or more of you -- and you are wearing a face covering (vaccinated or not), how is that different from the guy wearing a tin foil hat sitting on the bench 31 meters away from you? You are both protecting yourself and/or others from....(insert dangerous thing that is a big deal).

Seriously, take a big step back and take a good, hard look.

  4. "Not just because it might be safer...."

Might it be? Or might it not be? And safer from what? Catching a bug? Since when is everyone so scared of getting ill? You do know the numbers, right? You are, after all, more intelligent, aka "Smarter than the average bear."
And this doesn't even figure how remote the chances of you even coming across enough SARS-CoV-2 to even land on the graph. (By the way, life expectancy in Thailand is just over 77 years of age...in case you were wondering.)

But more power to you...I just hope all you vaccinated folks are double masking, since it's no secret that the fearfully deadly pathogen can jump like circus fleas from even the fully inoculated. And those blue paper, non-PM2.5 protective masks are ideal for this. Plastic visors are a good addition for your protection too, as are disposable plastic gloves and continual and copious slathering of alcohol gel (don't forget to swab up your nose with it, too). But what am I saying? You who are more socially responsible already know all this.

  5. Thais are racist.

That's just a fact.  People in the West, and in the US particularly who create problems from virtually nothing have no idea what real racism is. If you want to know the real depth, learn to understand the Thai language but don't tell anyone you can understand anything. You will not believe the things that are said -- often right in front of you, since you are so dumb not to have learned Thai in all the time you have been here -- about you and other foreigners, regardless of how innocent they have been or how well they might be helping their Thai partners (and their families) and friends. It would be laughable if it were not so pathetic.

Unfortunately, this situation is just like the weather; don't go live in Norway if you want to walk around in shorts all year long.

  6. The next door neighbor is a Chinese woman living alone with her six-year-old daughter.

For reasons unknown, the woman terrorizes the child about once or twice a week, with intense yelling, usually followed by slapping. Once while taking the dog out at night I saw as I walked past the woman hit the child in the face with a book. This is not normal discipline -- they are more like old fashioned Communist struggle sessions and can go on for over an hour. One session was well over three hours long of shouting, screaming and slapping.

I started audio recording a few of the more dramatic ones in case I needed proof that I was not exaggerating this, should I need to do something. My Chinese language is not super, but the second-to-most recent time (as I type this, in fact) she was railing at the child about "not appreciating her mother enough."

I've really had enough of listening to this. The child is very tiny for a six-year-old and I can't for the life of me understand what such a young and carefree girl could do to deserve hours of beratement. Yesterday the mother had her run up and down the soi as some from of punishment. Afterword, she was made to sit and practice the piano, which consists of playing the exact same song, over and over (every day), no other song, just this one.

Is there a website or phone number that I can call to send someone out here to at the very least educate the mother and hopefully scare her enough ("Do you want us to take away your child and put her in a home without a child-beater?") to stop with the senseless torture? She doesn't speak a word of Thai -- only English and Mandarin.

    Any valid suggestions are welcome.

  7. "Those antivaxxers generally are very vocal about it and easily avoidable."

First off, who cares about these people? What I don't understand is the self-righteousness against something that should have no effect on "the believers."

Are the arguments and positions so threatening to you that you must censor them and avoid them at all costs?

I know a lot of people who firmly believe in an unseen and unknowable entity that they claim not only "watches over everyone and everything," but created all the creatures of the land, seas and skies at the same time, perhaps around 6,000 years ago. I think this idea is ludicrous but I don't cancel these believers or shun all contact with them. Why should I? Their odd beliefs don't impact what I know to be true.

They may say that I am contributing to possibly infecting others with my beliefs and denying them a chance at everlasting life; but then, how does that impact you? I and others have made our choices. If you are self-protected from damnation, good for you. Leave the others alone.

I am not anti-vaccine; that would be counter to science. But for me, I am not at substantive risk due to my age and health and feel that if vaccines are to be given, please use them on those who are at risk. My healthy, 25-year-old coffee shop worker is vaccinated, but my feeble, 72-year-old next door neighbor is not? What is that about?

Personally, I am not against the current vaccines, although the very fact that they are "leaky" and numbers out of many places (such as Israel) and the recent statement of the US president that the 'vaccinated need to be protected from the unvaccinated' underscores this, I think they are worthwhile for those at risk.

I am however leery of the fact that natural immunity is virtually ignored in these discussions. Why the single-mindedness of vaccines? How do you think we gained our understanding of the mechanisms of vaccinations in the first place?

But to the point of the question: Is life possible in Thailand without the vaccine?

According to the Google machine, Thailand is 16.7% fully vaccinated, somewhat better than Zimbabwe, not quite as good as Grenada. Given this, statistically, it will be a long time before you are the one that is keeping all of the nation just that one shot away from the mythical and arbitrary 70 percent (and that discounts all those who knowingly or unknowingly have acquired natural immunity).

The only thing that you need to keep in mind is whether or not immigration will mandate injections to maintain your visa status to stay here. Foreigners don't enjoy the full privileges afforded to Thai citizens, so it's unclear if forcing this measure is illegal, as if that matters here.

However, if you are working here, your employer might require you to get a vaccine or else they could dock your pay (for "weekly testing"). While this is probably against the law, most workers simply roll over and accept that.

So yes, life is very possible.

  8. "For those who want to travel outside Thailand and then come back into Thailand again, you need a vaccine passport."

Has this been printed in the official gazette?

I've never heard this; the whole point of quarantining on arrival would be a farce if this were true.
