  1. Just look at the Government Inflation figures and multiply them by at least 3 and even then you are not close to the real inflation rate for foreigners. The official inflation rate is around 1.5% a joke. 2 years ago my coffee jar was 65 baht now it is 150 baht. That is over 100% inflation. Electricity is kept at a stable rate as it impacts on the poor. Nobody knows how the Government calculates the inflation rate or what basket of goods it includes. My guess it is around 7%.

  2. I have an actual transferwise account in the UK. My Bangkok Bank Account shows transfers from the UK as International Transfers. They arrive at about 2pm the day after I transfer them from the UK. I transfer £ which automatically get converted to baht at the rate given by transferwise the day before. It is the best way to transfer money. Large sums can be held up in Thailand because of money laundering regulations.

  3. I asked Pattaya Immigration this question. They stated that when I lived in my own house, which is no longer the case, I didn't have to file a TM30 after returning from overseas. Now I am renting a condo if my landlord is filing a TM30 on my behalf I also don't have to report myself. However if I go abroad I should tell my landlord that I am going abroad as he is reporting my presence daily to Immigration.

Immigration has an android app that allows you to report yourself without going to Immigration. For safety I will use when I return from abroad.

  4. Went to Jomtien Immigration today to ask if they had any new information about what will happen next year and they said at the moment it looks like you will need 800k or 400k in a bank account for at least 3 months before applying to renew your retirement Visa next November. I asked what the requirements were for a Marriage Extension. A photo of me, my wife and a witness in our bedroom and for the 3 of us to go to Immigration with the Marriage Certificate and a letter from the bank confirming the deposit and that it had been in the account for 3 months. Harsh!

  5. I have just received this from the British Embassy

"Our British Embassy in Bangkok currently issues a pension letter as a supporting document for British nationals applying for a Thai retirement or marriage visa application.  The Thai authorities have confirmed that they want the British Embassy to verify the income of British nationals which they are unable to do.  They/We would refer such requests to the issuing authority.   Therefore, the current letter does not fulfil the Thai authorities requirements so we need to stop issuing it so it is not misinterpreted as verification."

Obviously Thai Immigration is behind this move so for once the British Embassy is not to blame. It would seem that in due course all other Embassies will be affected. I have never understood why a copy of UK bank statement and a Thai Bank statement hasn't been sufficient evidence for Immigration. I know of people who do falsify the information that they give the Embassy to verify. Those people have caused the problem.

  6. Transferwise is based in London and overseas UK residents can open an account with them with little hassle. It is covered by the UK protections. You also have the advantage of extremely good exchange rates when transferring money to Thailand. The transfer costs are much cheaper than with other banks as well.

  7. Disgraceful answer from supposedly British Embassy. I pay over £2,000 a year in UK taxes to the UK Government and my pension income is supported by P60's which are officially recognised by the UK Government. I would have extreme difficulty getting permission for my wife to live in the UK but the Embassy says no problem put the best part of £20,000 in a bank account in Thailand for 3 months and you will be able to stay there with no problems. Hopefully some solution will be found without having to resort to brown envelopes!

  8. Each Immigration Office seems to have slightly different rules! At Jomptien if you have a Retirement Visa and a re-entry Visa and return to Thailand to live at the same house or condo you don't have to fill in a new TM30. When entering the country you are in effect reporting your address to Immigration and starting your 90 day TM7.

  9. I've watched a divorce and it seems that both your and your wife's marriage certificates are required your passport, her ID and the housebook. I did not see any other documents. If you registered the marriage at the Embassy then you will need a certified translation of the Tambon divorce papers to unregister the marriage in due course in the UK.

  10. It varies from Amphur to Amphur (and probably by the size of the brown envelope but be wary of a change in local government officials). In Pong for more than 4 houses it is 8 metres and for less than 3 houses 6 metres. It's not clear what width is required for 4 houses! However the height of houses also comes into play. There is a formula that comes into play which requires houses of 4 or more stories to be on wider roads or to be set back from the road.
