He also allowed cabinet ministers, their spouses, and Government House officials to pour water on his hands and to receive his blessings on the occasion of the imminent Songkran Day this weekend.
I really believe it's a nice gesture in Thai culture to show elders respect.
Will do so in a few days for my parents in law and grand mom, who's really very sick.
And of course to some older Thai friends, which is a nice part of Thai culture. But to be honest it would be much better without a general in power.
I truly hope grandma will be part of it this year. Here're some photos from last year in the village.
Very cool post and certainly agree; it is the nicer part of Thai culture.

The Ministry of Tourism and and Sports and the Tourism Authority of Thailand are joining hands developing tourist spots in response particularly to Russian tourists' demands.
Didn't they say that the Russian market was declining due to the fall of the ruble and the climb of the baht?
The ministry plans to come up with traveling itinerary that particularly responds to Russian tourists' demands; for example, tie-in weight loss programs, which target female Russian travelers.
So they think that many of the Russian females are over-weight?
Every time the MOT comes out with this perpetual nonsense you are left shaking your head in disbelief to the level of stupidity.

Heart goes out to the parents.
No good to talk about safety in Thailand it'll always fall on deaf ears; this is a country that cares only about money. Earlier today the government stated that the would attempt to 'negotiate' with the ICAO over air safety issues ... yes negotiate which clearly shows how incompetent this country is.
Planes, boats, buses, minivans, taxis, jet skis ... avoid them at all cost if you value your life.

I could never support the death penalty. I realize that puts me in the minority here but so be it. The State should not have the right to take a life no matter how heinous the act.
I have no sympathy for this guy. He should be punished and should spend the remainder of his life in a 8' x 8' cell.
There are also members of the current and previous administration who authorized even worse offenses and deserve a similar fate.
Sent from my iPhone using Thaivisa Connect Thailand
There is clear evidence that the death penalty does not provide a deterrent against crime. However, this guy murdered many people and wounded / destroyed many other lives. Should the tax payer be burdened with having to give this scumbag a life of luxury behind bars.
There are taxpaying citizens that can't afford TV or three square meals a day but that's what this guy will get.
Execute him and have done with it ... it is a guarantee that he'll never be free to commit the same atrocities or worse escape and commit them.

Nice way to further alienate France. Thailand could use a few lessons in diplomacy.
Diplomacy is not in their DNA; it's why there are continuous coups ... looks like they unable to openly and honestly discuss anything of value. My way or the highway attitude.

Could those sounding off about France and Germany find them on a blank world map ?
I doubt it.

Aviation authorities are hoping for a compromise from ICAO.
So what are they saying? Maybe that Thais are not the superior race on the planet and therefore need a compromise because they are not capable of meeting the safety standards?
You wouldn't get me on a Thai carrier for all the tea in China.
The transport authorities are looking to restore ICAO’s confidence within its June 2 deadline, but do not believe they will be able to satisfy every transport standards requirement.
And that statement just about says everything about the incompetence of the imbeciles running the show.
Officials met on Wednesday and agreed to form a new unit comprised of five officials under the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA).
So it's confirmed .... those currently in charge haven't got the foggiest idea what they are doing but to keep their worthless jobs they'll just create a new unit where other will hopefully be able to do the job while they sit back and oversee the processes. No wonder Thailand is in such a mess.
If the DCA’s efforts are 80-90% complete by the June 2 deadline, there might be room for negotiation, according to Mr. Voradet.
If the ICAO 'negotiate' that negates the need to have rules in place in the first instance. The Thais need to stop thinking that everyone can be bought off ... I wonder if their negotiation tactics will include the attempt to hand over a brown envelope?
Seriously .... who in their right mind would step on an Thai carrier knowing this type of idiocy plays out on a daily basis.

Seriously ... you could offer me a truck load of cash, free 1st class air tickets and free accommodation at a 5 Star luxury resort and you still would get me to visit this cesspit.

Saw this newspapers in Tacloban recently. It is predected that the already huge demographic problem of overpopulation is about to double within 10 years. Visit Pasig or Tondo(...) districts in Manila and you experience the creepy situation.
The truth is that the much loved Catholic Church is actually the curse of the Philippines and responsible for all this, still doctors are by law not allowed to recommend using condoms to patients...
I was thinking along the same lines ... an over populated country due to draconian Church indoctrination that every sperm is sacred ...

General Prayut added that the proposed provision allowing for an unelected Prime Minister should be kept in the new constitution. He pointed out that the past government was not able to function during the political crisis leading up to May 22, when the military finally assumed control of the government.
That's a political slippery slope to be going down and there's nothing democratic about installing an un-elected PM. The previous government couldn't function properly when the military and police refuse to take orders to stop the violence which only goes to show what a mess the Thai political scene has become.
This is never going to end ... gov - coup - gov - coup

It's kind of funny because the taxis, just like the jet skis, have always caused a lot of problems in Phuket. This problem exists not just because the authorities bow down to their every need but more importantly stupid people use their services.
The truth is that the public should stop moaning about these issues and simply refrain from using them ... do you honestly think that the taxis and jet skis could survive long without any customers?
It's a very simple solution to an very long and on-going situation and it'll continue until the people take a pro-active stance.

OK, well that's one approach and I'm sure they'd keep their word ... NOT.
The second and most sensible approach would be to enforce and even toughen the laws:
1. A minimum of 25 years imprisonment
2. Stripping of all family assets
Try it out on a few and see then if other decide if their corrupt ways are really worth the price.

First, the French president is elected, unlike Prayut who had staged a coup and hence lacked legitimacy. Second, Phuttipong said Article 44 was beyond checks and balances unlike Article 16 of the French constitution in which the Constitutional Council - the Thai equivalent of the Constitutional Court - can scrutinise the conditions for the use of the power.
And that ladies and gentlemen says all you need to know about Prayut and the legitimacy of his government.
It would be interesting to see what the French gov has to say as a response. I now wonder how much longer the rest of the world will stand idly by and allow this to continue without considering sanctions.

More wishful propaganda. Their sheer amount of BS puts a dairy farm to shame.

Rightly so .... next thing you know they'll be telling you that there are ghosts at Swampy airport that causes aircraft to crash land. Time for a little common sense.

After the Cabinet meeting yesterday at Government House, Prayut said he was not worried about domestic acceptance of the new constitution, but then asked what if the international community rejects it.
No because the population wasn't and isn't being given a choice. I would be amazed if the international community didn't reject it because there is nothing democratic about it.
"If they [international community] won't accept it [the new charter], they will claim that our country has no democracy, similar to what they think about Article 44 under the interim charter. We use it to benefit the country, but they accuse us of coercing [people on this]," Prayut said.
They won't need to claim the country has no democracy because it's a known fact that it doesn't and never can under a ruling Junta that invokes articles that restricts or eradicates even the most basic of human rights. I think the PM should look up the word coercion and discover its true meaning; often it can be attributed with 'force'.
"The NCPO has solved less than 30 per cent of the problems facing the country. We need the public to know how we can move forward and end divisions. We need public acceptance. That is why we need to look how foreign countries tackle their problems,'' Prayut said.
It's not that difficult and meetings don't need to be held with foreign diplomats as they have already expressed their concerns. What the Thais often fail to recognize is that 'democracy' is a painful process and never will everyone agree on the political entity running the country but democracy is about 'majority' consensus and unless you can abide by that principle then democracy can never be achieved. It is simply fruitless attempting to protect a certain section or institution; you must, if you truly want democracy, allow the people to decide ... whether you agree with it or not.
"I want people to ask how they could cooperate, but no one asks such questions. They only ask when there will be an election," the PM said.
Yes they only ask when there will be an election because such is the only way to democratically elect a government they want to be governed by. If the PM wants the public to co-operate then hold a general election and they will co-operate by voting.
Nonetheless, General Prayut put the question back to the public, saying there have been calls for an election as soon as possible but one must ask: "Does Thailand today need reforming? If not and you request an election to be held now - just tell me so I can take a rest."
Has the PM not been listening? That's exactly what the public want but once again it's back to the fears of the ruling elite that the public won't be voting the way they want. Right now the people are fearful of asking and who can blame them with Article 44 looming over their heads.
Sometimes people do not understand this matter clearly, they only understand that democracy is having an election and give full freedom and authority to the people, but no-one asks for the people's role. "I want people to question their duties on how they can cooperate with the government," he added.
That's not the way it should be ... the people don't work for the government in a democracy the government work for the people. The job, the only job, of the electorate is to vote in those they wish to see government and then through democracy insist they follow the manifesto.
The PM was also asked whether the government is considering holding a referendum on the new charter, but Prayut now was not the time to consider that issue.
Is that democratic?
Regardless of which country you live in democracy is always attainable but only when the power has been handed over to the public to decide without coercion or force and more importantly without the threat of a few being able to stage a coup simply because they disagree with policies enacted.
Thailand may well achieve democracy but I fear not in my lifetime.

The governor’s inspection came after the problem was raised by the National Council for Peace and Order after it could hurt tourism.
Yeah never mind the environmental impact just worry about the impact on tourism for there lies the money and we can't have that being damaged.
Clueless and greedy.

Long has there been strong evidence that that death penalty is NOT a deterrent on crime. Although I'm an advocate of the death penalty I will admit, looking at lots of the research, that it appears that the death penalty will never stop certain people from committing even the most heinous of crimes.
However, ultimately the death penalty prevents the individual from ever being able to re-offend and saves the taxpaying public of having to keep those incarcerated and in most cases for life. When you look at the US and UK for instance such criminals live a life of luxury compared to the hard-working taxpayer.
I'll continue to support the death penalty and hope that it will provide a second thought to those who intend to commit a crime that is punishable by the death penalty.

Accountability ... something that doesn't exist in Thailand in any shape or form.
Criticism as we know from the government is an unacceptable practice as 'FACE' is far more important than any human life and that comes in second place to MONEY!

His remark came after a fortune-teller earlier cast doubt on the time frame for the general election. You couldn't make this crap up.
Apart from the stupidity of what was said is anyone surprised that Prayut might not step down. He can of course continue down this path but as with Burma the west will eventually have not choice but to start placing sanctions ... this in turn will leave Thailand's economy is tatters and they'll end up like most countries run by dictators ... those at the top will be extremely rich whilst those at the bottom will starve to death ...... oh yeah a bit like it is now.

Lots of good comments but again nobody really addressed the effects their drug smuggling had on the victims. These people effectively bring about misery and death to thousands of innocent families. Like it or not this is yet two more scumbags that the world can do without.
Pull the trigger, let's have done with it.

The west have a lot to answer for concerning their actions on presumed weapons of mass destriction,
They didn't exist then but the growth of ISIS is due to the seeds set by the worlds bully and its propoganda machines.
It was all orchestrated. Ask yourself ... How do you control a population? The answer is three elements, fear, ignorance and poverty.
The war effectively made those in the US a lot poorer; let's be honest the US is broke. The population was fed by lies with makes most ignorant to the truth. The final element is the worst of all because once a government manages to make the population as fearful as possible (terrorist attacks looming every second) the population will roll over and allow the government to enact whatever laws it likes to make them safe .... look at the Patriot Act.
Of course most will consider this BS but there is now way too much evidence out there to suggest that government is working for the people.

Thai Police to prosecute indiscriminately against human traffickers, accomplices
in Thailand News Headlines
Posted
The Police Commander claimed that legal punishments will be applied to anyone regardless of their status or profile.
Won't hold my breath to see that one materialize.
Yes TIP is due out this June and it's all hands on deck but this won't fool the US, UK, EU or the entire UN. If there was a Level 10 Thailand would be on it.
