  1. closed for 60 days after the owner, an unlicenced doctor operated there ilegally, should be closed permanently and be forced to pay out heaps but then the hi-so would lose too much money and face, that would simply be too much for a thai, after all, it was only another "farang"(sarcasm), Yet people wonder why this sort of sh*t keeps happening, simple answer, profits are more important than people

Looks as though you missed the part where it said he's being charged with criminal negligence in the girls death.

Being charged means nothing. TIT. Seajae is right. This guy will probably not see any jail time or pay any fine.

  2. It's not the NOKIA name they should drop, it is the Windows 8 operating system. What a piece of crap.

I must admit that I sometimes wonder what would have happened to Nokia if they'd produced Android and Windows phones (like HTC), rather than picking Windows only. (The Android phones they did produce hid the fact they were Android).

I totally agree. I am about to return to Thailand after two months in the U.S. All the good apps from banks, transportation companies and retail outlets only work on Apple and Android operating systems. Haven't seen hardly any that work on Windows. I think that says a lot.

  3. Spoke to a guy this morning that just arrived here via a weeks holiday in Phuket. Comes here numerous times a year. Says that despite the new regulations/changes the fares are exactly the same as he's always paid!!whistling.giflaugh.png

Perhaps he was not aware of the changes, same as many tourists will not know any better & get gouged.

Let's here from people on this forum, regular locals & their experiences.

I'm a "regular local" but you won't hear from me. I avoid taking a taxi at all cost. I hire a friend of a friend to take me where I want to go. It is always a reasonable price and no hassle.

  4. Sometime during the month of August, I remember reading a very detailed description of how to fill out the Arrival Card when returning to Thailand with a re-entry stamp on a Retirement extension. Unfortunately, I forgot to print it out and now I cannot find the thread where it was mentioned.

If anyone could provide me with the correct procedure, I would be most grateful. wai2.gif

  5. its a  3-4 year old yaris , emssions are a concern but i was assuming it won't be a problem because they have emssion standards in thailand as well, in CA now cars simply pass/fail emissions by attaching the exhaust pipe to a computer, hense older cars are now thrown off the road, considering its not old and has minimal miles on it and has a catalatic converter i dont think that would be an issue.. although the fact that it doesn't have a heater might be an issue lol, so much for driving to north dakota

While I am not 100% sure that what I am about to say is true, I would suggest you do some more research.

Being an American who has lived there 50+ years, I can say without a doubt that cars made for sale in Thailand do not even come close to the American standard requirements. Your car, made for Thai standards, would not pass American crash test requirements or emission test requirements and, I'm guessing that the cost to bring the vehicle up to American standards would just not be worth it.

I agree with previous posters who have said that you would be better off just selling the car here and using the money to purchase a car made to American standards.

    Best of luck to you.

  6. whistling.gif  For the benefit of those who think they have a retirement VISA that they got at their local immigration.
You do not have a visa, you have an extension of your original visa that originally got you into the country for one year.
That visa is EXTENDED for one year based on your qualifying for retirement.
That extension needs you to have an exit re-entry permit when you exit the country.
When you re-enter the country, on your arrival card, put in the place where it ask for "visa number" the number on that exit re-entry permit and write next to it the word "reentry".
That (hopefully) gives the clue to the immigration officer that there is a visa, or in this case a reentry permit for him or her to look for.
He or she should know then that you have a retirement or marriage visa/extension that is still valid and if they made a mistake when you entered they need to correct it.
That's called CYA (Cover Your A--), or CYAP (Cover Your A-- With Paper).
Of benefit to you,  a valid reentry like that also restarts your countdown clock for 90 day reporting on your return to Thailand.
Foe example, if you are 80 days into your 90 day cycle and you leave country, when you return with a reentry permit, your 90 day countdown clock resets to day one on the day you arrive back in country.

  7. since the running costs for a taxi are generally the same throughout Thailand, the fare structure should be same whether is it in Bangkok or anywhere else

Except there are no long trips which is where good money is made.

    http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/731983-taxi-mafia/page-4

We may see drivers refusing fares because they are so short which I believe is also illegal.

The whole point of flagfalls and surcharges is to make shorter trips more profitable. If taxis are getting 100 baht just for you stepping into the taxi they are going to be quite happy with short trips.

Not on Samui! These crooks aren't happy unless they're soaking you for 500 baht to go anywhere on the island, 600 if it is after dark. Nothing but a ripoff!

  8. The charges should be the same as in Bangkok or anywhere else in Thailand it is just another big rip off but everyone does it if I go to Makro on Samui a French stick is 26 baht the same item in Makro on Koh Phangan is 29 baht they say it is transportation charges , the damn things are made in-house !!

All probably true. But, how do the raw materials get to Koh Phangan? It seems to me that everything would be a bit more expensive there.

  9. But this morning a small group of Patpong vendors also showed up at the CSD headquarters and gave flowers to Maj Gen Jennarong in a show of support. They claimed the officer was innocent and was persecuted by real extortionists in a set-up arrest.

so why not give the CSD evidence or names of the so called real villains?...even anonomusly

Why not? Because they were only paid to say the general was not guilty. They did what they were paid to do, nothing more. Anything more would have required planning and thinking ahead.

  10. Traffic Police: The 5 common violations and No texting while driving measures goes well on first day

BANGKOK, 5 August 2014 (NNT)- Traffic police today reported smoother traffic flow at most intersections in the capital as thousands of police were deployed to implement strict measures concerning five common violations. Police are particularly enforcing the law against texting while driving.

Ninety Bangkok intersections which are normally congested with vehicles defying traffic laws, are being closely monitored. Police have launched the campaign against major violations of traffic laws focusing on taking legal action against drivers who cut across lanes especially at merging points. These drivers will receive the immediate attention of the law enforcers.

Traffic police commander Pol Maj-Gen Jirasan Kaeosang-ek said traffic flow this morning was smooth. From this D Day, the ‘no texting while driving’ order will be the focus of police action during the campaign. Drivers at fault are those who take a phone call, message or even browse the internet. He said the police would assess the result of this morning’s campaign this afternoon for improved supervision over coming days. Drivers who use a mobile phone to call, or text will receive a penalty ranging from 400 baht to 1,000 baht.

Only 364 days to go. IF they were out there 365, a few people might get the message and change their habits. One day, one week, forget it. Waste of time.

  11. Hopefully with a department store that doesn't only sell items for tourists (clothes and perfumes etc.). After the opening of Central Plaza Samui - as an expat living here - I was quite disappointed when I had to learn that for a "real" (=well-assorted) department store I still have to travel to Bangkok or Phuket.

Yes! And hopefully a place that has none of the stores and eating places that are found at almost every Tesco/Lotus and Big C I've been to. coffee1.gif

"What would you say is a 'standard ' when referring to higher standards. Teachers in Thailand already require a 5 year bachelors in education and pass numerous tests before attaining employment and a teaching license. Administrators and supervisors also need to meet these requirements."

Because TIT. A "5 year bachelors in education" degree can be purchased. Passing numerous tests, the answers to which probably can be purchased. If you have a rich daddy all of the above can probably be purchased.

From what I have heard and seen, there are a lot of incompetent, lazy teachers and administrators in the Thai school system. So it seems to me that the current standards are not adequate to insure quality teachers and administrators. And, the Thai education ranking among other countries of the world seems to prove my point. coffee1.gif

And yet on paper it has the highest standards .. I refer you to the picture in my other post for an answer..

Yes, CasualBiker, I read the article, which expresses the opinion of ONE academic. The problem is that there are many other people, both inside and outside Thailand, who disagree with this person. Also, since you have a history with TV, I'm guessing that you are aware of the reports of cheating on exams, purchasing diplomas, etc. I remember one article that talked about a bunch of folks taking a test for one or more teaching positions and not one of them was able to pass the test. While I am 100% in favor of all teachers being required to meet the same standards, I believe that teachers from outside Thailand would be a big plus. To respond to Mr. Thongbu's statement about taking teachers feelings into account, I say, Yes, feelings should be considered but, If a teacher cannot/does not perform, then that teacher should find another job.
