  1. Riverside changed ownership about 18 months ago. The 'wreck' was previous to that!

Take a tour around the lake and you'll find many good eating places, Thai and western. Many westerners frequent two places next to each other, both have a comprehensive western menu.

    Lakeview and Pizza101

  2. I've been a dog owner and trainer all my life. I used to give a temporary home to 'failed' police dogs until they could be

re-homed, inevitably I sometimes ended up keeping one or two!

I agree that there is a huge problem with soi dogs almost everywhere and the most sensible solution is to euthanise not only

those that cause problems but also those that are dependant on scavenging for existence. However, not all soi dogs are nasty

and vicious. A few months ago, a half-starved long legged mutt started roaming our soi. So friendly, not afraid of approaching people but abused by many people in the soi because of his failure to comprehend the nastiness of some people. The dog only wanted food. A humane ending to abandoned and stray dogs, whatever their temperament is not only in the local resident's interest but also the dogs unless a good home can be found for them.

He was lucky, the long-legged mutt adopted my garden to sleep in and the rest is history. (He jumped the fence) He is now

slowly putting on weight, fully vaccinated and beginning to obey basic commands. Yes, he still roams the soi and although

friendly to people, because he is quite tall he can be intimidating when he approaches in his bounding style! He is a soi dog,

I will never be able to change that or his wanderlust and his friendliness that might become the cause of his demise. Until then, I will enjoy his new devotion to my family (who had their doubts) but now who love him to bits and treat him like their old

    family dog that recently died.

Yep, I'm one of those tree huggers who should be deported for feeding a soi dog!

I was there for 6 days New Year holiday and was told the Riverside on that link closed maybe 4 years ago.

However, I did notice a few groups of foreigners sitting in restaurants next to the park lake. Can any Roi Et locals advise me if these locations sell western food or do the western customers only meet for a beer?

Any further comments from the OP?

Errrr .............. Look at the review dates and you will find it is alive and kicking. I pass by the place regularly and on Wednesday nights the place is still very busy.

The places by the lake are still in business and have a western menu.

  4. To JL,

I'm not disputing your 10y bank manager relationship but it's highly unusual for a manager to stay in one branch for more than 4 years, they're normally forced to move on to another branch. The two managers in my family have had to anyway and my local BKK manager had to switch branches fairly recently as well.

Or maybe you move branch with your manager?

    Anyway, no worries!

  5. Hi Op, plenty of farang in and around the Roiet area and some have good knowledge about local requirements and recreational facilities available. TMK, many can be found in the farang haunts especially on a Wednesday night and a place many go for Sunday lunch. A couple of guys spring to mind who I'm sure, would lend you a guiding hand.

No doubt they will be along shortly!

Worse when they begin to apply the tar!

I have a 40km section of road that I use and I have no alternative route. For the last 2 years it's been in the process of being widened, resurfaced and then dug up and patched up! The mud and dust is one thing but when they start asphalting it's a nightmare!

I always try to stop for a few minutes to let the asphalt and the tar dry a little but sometimes it's impossible when sandwiched between a couple of 12 wheelers so end up with tar marks up the side and inner wheel arches lined with a new coat of rust preventative!

TBH, I wish they would have severe speed restrictions in place when doing road reconstruction. Once they strip the original surface and lay new foundations, it's normally left for a couple of weeks to let the traffic 'bed it in'. During this time my poor little car gets covered in stonechips from speeding vechicles from the opposite side.

  7. IMHO, just from research I did a few years ago while living in another S.E.A. country.

The UK driving licence does not become invalid if you live abroad, providing you have a permanent residential UK address.

It cannot be renewed with an address that is not in the UK, the system does not accept foreign abodes.

So, if you have an address in the UK different from that which is on your licence then it's a simple address change and renewal.

If you have no UK address and only a foreign abode then the system will not accept it.

    From the DVLA website:

    If you’re moving abroad

You can’t register your new address on your British driving licence.

  8. Can you visit China? ……… Yes.

Can you live in China? ….. Depends.

To keep it very simple. To live in China you must fulfil certain criteria:

Be legally married to a Chinese citizen.

    Be legally working.

Be part of a legally approved business in China.

I lived and worked in Southern China for 5 years.

Short time VISA is a lot cheaper to buy in Thailand (1,000bht), it's nearly 4x that price in the west.

Had a pal who was married to a Chinese girl who didn't seem to have a VISA problem living there.

His wife told me she had many friends that would like a foreign husband, if I were interested.

It's a very strange place, and you'd really have to learn to speak Chinese.

IMHO. Chinese speak more English than Thais and certainly the officialdom is much easier to deal with, it's very black and white!

Not a strange place at all, very accommodating and respectful of foreigners (laowai). Just a different culture to observe, no more different than observing the Thai culture for the first time.

If you want to live anywhere it's about learning the local culture etc. You don't have to agree with it but be willing to accept it.

If it wasn't for the air pollution, even in so-called clean cities and the awful dreary winters I would still be there!

  9. Just come across this topic ….nice one Op.

I was in my local BB branch last week and enquired about changing my visa debit card to the UP card. TBH, it makes very little difference to me. I was informed by 'my' counter clerk to refrain from changing cards and wait awhile, at least until next year, that's as much as she would say.

Nice girl, always has a smile and speaks understandable English so I will sort of verify that something is in the wind concerning an alternative to the so-called dreaded Union Pay debit card!

  10. It's around 650km from Surat Thani to the centre of Bangkok.

According to various stats online for 5 year old CBR150R they will average 30 - 35kml.

Fuel is about 30฿ per litre.

    650km / 30km = 21.7 ltr * 30฿ = 651฿

Surat Thani to the centre of Bangkok riding a 5 year old CBR150R should cost no more than  651฿. Max.

    Probably more likely around 500฿

  11. Looks like a member of the bromeliad family to me.

I had a different one in the UK, common name the urn plant. Always recommended that the centre 'urn' or vase is topped up with rain water or use distilled water, not tap water and changed every 2-3 weeks. Must keep the soil on the dry side and mist the plant regularly.

    • Brown leaf tips: Dry air from lack of humidity could be the cause of leaf tips turning brown and dry, which can be improved with misting or using a humidity tray. Also, check if the vase has been filled with water regularly and enough.

    • Brown leaf patches: Brown leaf patches may be caused by too much direct sunlight. Move the plant into a shaded spot from the sun and remove severely damaged leaves.

    • Plant dies: If the plant has not bloomed yet and its not going through the normal cycle of creating offsets and dying then the most likely cause was over watering.

    • Insects: Mealy bug and scale can be a problem.

    • Plant tips over easily: These plants tend to be quite top heavy which can make them topple easy. Rather than use a plastic container, it's best suited to ceramic or other heavier types.

  12. A few weeks ago I had a spinal block injection for an operation at our local hospital. Although the effects only lasted around 6 hours, I have never felt so vulnerable in my whole life. The total lack of any feeling from the chest down was something I never, ever want to experience again.

I will be totally and brutally honest. Before I had this operation I never had that much sympathy for you Colin because I had the impression of you as someone who used your disability as a method to gain 'friends' and as a way to gain support. Now I can fully understand your plight and the feelings (or lack of) you must go through everyday.

You are a very brave man Colin (much braver than I could ever be) and I apologise  profusely. I wish you and your family a peaceful outcome to your neighbourhood problems and hope they become solved in the very near future. Please continue to be a cranky old bugger!

    All the best, Madgee.

  13. Oh wise one, please send me your new (yet to be published) booklet on 'How To Be Legal In Thailand'.

I'm hoping you select me as a vivid reader of TV, to get a sneak preview copy for the once in a lifetime price of 500baht!

Oh, BTW. I don't want to rock the boat but you don't have to be a business to register a TM30 online. (I will let you know my sources later when I'm not so busy).

    Thank you so much.

  14. This new law has been well documented in the Thai press and on TV.

AFAIK, it applies to landlords who own 5 or more dwellings which are being used as rental accommodation.

In the 'boonie' town that I live there are many single room apartment blocks that charge 8 baht per unit for electricity.

Under this law, the owners are now also responsible for minor repairs such as broken locks etc.

Now, let's see if anyone is brave enough to confront their landlord!
