Most of us know Thai style khao mun gai. Well that's similar to the chicken rice you would get in Singapore, etc. but not the same. In my non expert opinion, it's about the care given to how the chickens are cooked resulting in a distinctive flavor and texture.

Actually the best Khao Man Gai is made from Capons, not Chickens.

  2. After yesterdays day at the races, we dropped in to Vientiane on Nerm Plub Wan, only to find a name change, which is now 'Nham Nuang'

Asked the waitress why, she said it had been sold, and the new owner wanted a name change.

    End of an Era ...

Apart from the menu is the same, prices were the same, and the food was as good as ever.

how (deleted) stupid is that at a time when tourism is under pressure - oh yes there might be numbers provided from other Asian countries but how much are they spending ?????

Thailand needs to think very hard about what it is they want, once people start going elsewhere it will be very difficult to win them back

It really defies any sort of sensible logic - 18% of GDP and it is going down the drain and self inflicted

The strong baht in 2019 is a result of Thailand's massive current account surplus. The surplus, worth US$26.4 billion (797 billion baht) on a year-to-date basis as of September, stems from lower import value compared with export value, inflows of tourism revenue and near-record foreign reserves of about $222 billion.

  4. Spotted on Facebook, and probably worth posting here ..

End of an era, as Smokin' Joe's and Steak & Co change hands. Sold to a Korean/Japanese venture. Former owner Ian has taken out a lease on a Lengkee unit (photo), to be converted to a Western-style Chinese restaurant and takeaway, with delivery of course, under the 'Hungry Panda' name, and is looking at other potential investments around town. Good to see some money is still being spent in Pattaya and in Lengkee, which has been suffering of late..

EDIT - just to make it clear, SJ’s and S&C are NOT closing, as far as anyone knows so far it’s carrying on as normal under the new owners...

I was wondering the same. Formerly on Soi Buakhao specializing in Brit takeaway style Chinese food and pretty good if I recall. A UK guy whose Thai wife did the cooking.

Yep. Always had major problems with staffing in the restaurant and eventually closed and moved to a cabin on LK Metro opposite Billabong. Last heard of working in conjunction with a restaurant in Rhompo. Have been able to buy their frozen takaways from a couple of farang minimarts on the Darkside until recently. IMO the best Chinese food in Pattaya.

Rattana has been cooking in Glasgow (and Dublin, if I remember correctly) for many years now.
