The most severe haze episode occurred in 1997 and resulted in sharp increases in outpatient visits (26%) and hospital admissions (33% for all respiratory, 36% for pneumonia, 40% for bronchitis/chronic pulmonary obstructive disease, 12% for asthma) within a period of a few months
However, a recently completed large-scale population-based epidemiology study with > 26,000 subjects indicated that residents who live near the petrochemical industrial estate have higher risks in adverse pregnancy outcomes, neuropsychological symptoms, and poor performance on neuropsychological tests
-------------
The centre estimated the city's population of 15 million spent 600 million baht in total to buy standard face masks over the course of two months, and 800,000 people would have needed to visit a hospital because of the air pollution.
-------------
My 90% figure will now be updated to 90.01%, and rising.
lol
enjoy the pollution thread as you "retire in luxury" and live your best possible life.
To simply accept MONTHS of sickness (physical or psychological) is really incredible. Hey, can you go to prison for 3 months every year of your life and die 10-years early? Sure!!! great life
3 months? More like 5-6 months..

Solvability is important. Do any of the measures being proposed actually have any impact on climate change?
Or are they simply harsh measures that solve an entirely different problem i.e. the profitability of Western corporations and the ability of governments to levy even more taxes on their already over-taxed populations?
Banning all car and air travel would reduce carbon emissions by less than 1%. Natural geothermal emissions (things like volcanic gasses) account for 80% of carbon.
Look, I'm not saying that an economic system based upon ever growing consumption is in any way sustainable, and I might even be onboard if anyone proposes a radical plan that actually tackles the supposed problem.
What you have at the moment, however, is a cabal of vested interests using climate change in the same way they have always used wars in the past, as a convenient baton with which to make populations cohere around measures that actually have nothing to do with their real problems.
If it's true that 80% of carbon is from natural emissions then how come they keep saying that scientists are in consensus that climate change is man made?

Thai's are ungovernable because they will always do whatever they want to do, regardless of the consequences to others - and that includes driving the way they do. Add to that a total lack of monitoring by a Highway Patrol and a total non-interest in enforcing the law by the police, and so nothing will or can change. It's a cultural thing. Thais are simply not wired to act responsibly if it inhibits their personal freedom.
They respond to consistent enforcement. I blame the traffic police for this failure. I've yet to see them patrol the roads, been here 7 years.

Enforcement.
It works.
There is a automatic camera system that sends fines for running the red light near my house in Chiang Mai.
Ever since it was introduced most people have stopped running red lights in this specific intersection. Enforcement works. Just gotta stop with the silly checkpoints and actually patrol the roads and increase the fines.

It could be this:

My wife's granddaughter of 3 years have just come home from hospital treated for it.
She have been in hospital more times the last half year while they could not make her well again, she coughed very much especially in nights, had fever often, lost weight and was not well overall. But the last time in hospital they tested her blood and sputum for this bacteria and only the blood test came out positive and she got the appropriate treatment for 2 weeks and now she is home again and well.
I doubt it as that one is treatable according to the CDC link you sent.

I'm lucky that my neighbors dogs usually only bark during the day.. she has 7 small dogs and they are completely untrained / out of control.
I don't have a big problem with it... Just happy they don't bark at night LOL

I wonder what specific infection it was. Blood infection sounds very vague.
Perhaps its some unidentified type of infection. Would also explain why it was untreatable.

Im 37 years old and healthy except for being overweight.
I'm 190cm tall and weighed 120kg. So that's obese I think.
I couldn't get Thai health insurance. I don't really need it for a visa because I have work permit and "business Visa" but I was kind of shocked that they rejected my application and refused to take my money...

Why would somebody go to night bazaar on a Saturday when the Saturday market is open?

There is one downside with driving slower, it's that you get frustrated vehicles behind you that will overtake you recklessly to make a point. Also driving slow means being stuck all the way to the left and being pushed out on to the curb where we have a bunch of obstacles ... With all of the above, I still think driving slower is best.

Perhaps immigration suspected that it involved underage girls trafficked from neighboring countries.

quote "it doesn't mean he himself would not be corrupt once in power."
By the same reasoning it also doesn't mean he will be corrupt either, does it?
Mango Bob is correct.
Correct, the point is that we can't automatically assume that anti corruption stance pre power means no corruption once in power.

I try to remember that everyone on the roads here has the same experience.
Bad Thai drivers is obviously the problem.... But guess what, all Thai drivers have the same experience as you and me. They are also all surrounded by idiots, just like you and me.
This is why there's so much petty and anger on the roads, because everyone hates each other on the roads here... With some good reason...

what he is really asking is why the army does not report to the civilian government, this is the guy this country really needs in the top spot
Just because he is pointing out corruption in the military it doesn't mean he himself would not be corrupt once in power. The military also pointed out corruption in their predecessors.... Your memory doesn't go back long huh?

I feel the opposite.
In Phuket, Krabi and Samui I feel like a scam target constantly. Fake smiles everywhere as they try to rip you off.
In Chiang Mai i feel like I'm treated decently by everyone. Almost never feel scammed or ripped off.

I'm currently in Thailand on a business Visa + work permit. Working here.
If I decide to retire in Thailand I plan to have the 800k plus... Will o get rejected because the 800k did not come from overseas? It would come from my salary from the Thai company that employs me.

You mean they add it AFTER the order or is it included in the shipping price or what? I just ordered and it says Duties and taxes: 0 ... So now im worried that they will add it later.

Set up cameras everywhere (they probably have already).
Hire a large crew (or automate) to view the footage and send out fines to offenders. Keep doing this permanently.
They did this in an intersection near my house and now almost everyone stops for red/yellow there... Thais respond to persistent enforcement.
