  1. I would have thought that being mentally handicapped was a prerequisite to join the army.
  2. Yes, yes, I thoroughly agree with you Dr. Kratai......erhm but I still want a lawyer, maybe two would be better.
  3. We haven't seen anything yet, wait until global warming makes many countries intolerable to live in then the great trek to Northern Europe, America, Canada etc. will follow. I'm sure a contingency plan has been put in place and it will have nothing to do with shelters or camps.
  4. scammed three times and finally flipped, it doesn't take much for some people. He could have gone to court of course concerning the scams but would he have got justice as a Somchai in Thailand? Why shoot the daughter though?
  5. The Thai Brakarn pay (ไทยประกันภัย) and the Thai Brakarn chiwit (ไทยประกันชีวิท....life insurance) are two different entities.
  6. I've felt that death occurring to a noisy neighbour at 3 in the morning would be a reason to celebrate on several occasions.
  7. They are probably right, Teflon still shines in Thailand, I doubt that they can rely on tourism as much as they did in the past but there are enough entrepreneurs in Thailand who could take advantage of the damaged supply chain to make a quick buck in the next few years ahead.
  8. I have no experience of the 'nick', I've led a sheltered life, paying my fines by bank transfer.
  9. About time too, where I live I even see police cars weaving among the people using the Zebra crossing.
  10. It's not slang, that is what they are officially called in the UK, it is nice to see them using correct English as opposed to the awful American expressions....cross walk indeed, ever seen a cross walk?
  11. I don't see how fear helps maintain power. It is surely in the interest of the government that people are happy, employed and able to go out and enjoy themselves, that would mean less stress and more satisfaction with the governing powers. When stress, fear and poverty govern your private life you start to think, want answers, want change, a change of government would be foremost in ones mind. You can see throughout the world that open protest is forming against the regulations to control covid, even in such law abiding conservative thinking countries as Germany and Holland protests are starting to turn ugly and the rhetoric is more extreme. The controls in place are desperate measures to try and control a most unusual situation but people just aren't used to such control being introduced to their lives, it is unprecedented in modern times and so the mindset of acceptance isn't there. I saw a program about nurses, in Ohio I believe, where the governing powers refuse the stringent methods employed elsewhere, as a result 60% have covid and even those anti-vaxers in ICU refuse to believe that they have covid 19, it is self delusion, so yes government has a duty to force these restrictions on people for their own good even if it makes them unpopular.
  12. Like a black and white minstrel show with those white masks and black clad commandos in the background.
  13. I imagine he is seeking advice from Boris about survival, they are both good at it.
  14. The EU's demise, along with the Euro, has been forecast thousands of times especially by the Daily Express but the ship is still sailing with countries still willing to join.
  15. Yes, the results aren't very good but Thai politics is Machiavellian, apart from party politics he must also look over his shoulder at the military as well as being careful to satisfy various powerful figures who keep him in power. I obviously don't know him but since he is a military politician I assume he is only interested in his own position of power and at that he has done rather well so as a person he isn't pathetic, probably a dangerous man to cross with a bank account that we can only dream of. A man with one eye on the army and another on public opinion, he is in out of his depth but he has claws kept well hidden.....for now.
  16. And yet he is where he is, his performance maybe unimpressive but for a pathetic man he has done rather well for himself, he seized the bull by the horns at the beginning and has even managed to keep his job through political manipulation, not a man to be underestimated, far from pathetic.
  17. I don't think that something being legal or illegal bothers a Thai much, it would however be illegal to drive while under the influence of marijuana but then so is drink driving.....enough said. In the UK DUI of drugs has overtaken drink driving and even though the police are equipped with drug testing swipes for cocaine and marijuana they seem powerless to stop it, even old ladies get arrested now after testing positive for drugs. The thing is I doubt if the police have the equipment to test for drug driving and since they aren't even very gung ho on drink driving I suspect that accidents will now climb as joints will now be dirt cheap and freely available and also not so detectable at a roadside stop.
  18. No, not really, where I am in Isan the only sign of a pandemic are the masks in public places, less so in the village. It's true that I don't frequent bars or restaurants, I drink my beer at home, I lead a quiet life by choice. Possibly in the towns and cities the pandemic perceptions are worse as one had more choices and a larger circle of acquaintances, going out was more of a thing and when that stops emptiness floods in because there was more 'doing' than 'being'. Not just in Thailand, reading Western newspapers it has become apparent to me that most people can't be alone and have to fill their time with activities no matter how meaningless. Being in a farming village is a sane place to be (for me).
  19. I doubt that, it may an incentive to some big investors, they didn't grow rich drinking the milk of human kindness.
  20. Let us not get too woke, if the miscreant had been a man or a woman they would have written that, since the person was neither that was also written.
  21. 42,000 pounds a year makes me think of other options, like a leaking gas stove or castor rollers on a walking stick.
