  1. Someone on this site recommended for Pizza (Sorry, I forgot who you were):

    Juzza Pizza at Fishermans Village.

Thanks for the suggestion. Had good pizza and surprisingly good crust.

    NOTE:

Be careful of the Street Stall foods on Friday nights. My wife and I had diarrhea for 3 days and bad stomach pain.

We ate a variety of food, so cannot pinpoint which is the culprit, but if and when I do find out, I'm going to dump a plate of it on the

ground and trample on it to death!

  2. The only "scum bags" here on Koh Phangan are the Cheap Charley tourists who think that they can have anything here for 50 Baht (or less)..

300 Baht per person for a taxi boat ride, up the East coast, at this time of year, is a bargain....

    Too expensive?? Walk..

That's as straight forward you're going to get and completely correct.

I've walked it from Haad Mae Hat to Thong Sala...........took about 2 hours.........nice walk!

  3. Well it sometimes comes down to this, if there are multiple number of people using a taxi boat, then the price per person is less... it's the same with the KP taxi service (songtoas)... there is a big difference between one person going to an area, or a truck load full...

And of course this so called "Mafeir cut of the daily take too (if there is any) ... so if you were alone, 700 baht is really not unreasonable...IMO.... he'd probably would head back to Chaloklum empty... or sit the all day waiting for a ria" ... wants theturn ride...

    You know what..........you're right.

I really need to re-evaluate my opinion on that.

  4. And they also take the visa aspect very seriously.

Most schools in Samui do have a reputation to protect and do take the visa thing seriously.

If you starting with the written aspect of the language first, be prepared to sit in Nathon immigration for an hour writting in Thai next you go for an upgrade.

Since I started with the speaking aspect, I had to do 30 minutes of smacking my lips in Thai in front of "Teh Man".

Though I do have to admit that he was kind enough to correct me a few times on mistakes I made.

His last words, "Next time you come, you speak more!"

  5. If you think being addressed as "FRENCH" is bad, try living with people pointing, giggling and calling you "GAIJIN" literally meaning "non-Japanese who has no hell of a chance of understanding Japanese people nor it's things Japanese OUTSIDER" for 17 years.

On top of that, throw in "GWEILO" meaning Ghost by educated English speaking Hong Kongers for another 9 years.

I'd rather be called FRENCH the an outsider or White Devil anytime.

  6. Well spotted MM.

No steep hills for the view they wrote.

Correct (maybe) but check out the stairs!

AND - great for plane spotters. You will be able to recognise every pilot on Bandit Airways as they zoom past your window.

I would be interested, but did you see the artwork? No way I would want those paintings on my wall.

    I agree, bad location.

I also noticed the first pic seem Photochopped with more coconut trees air brushed in.........

But still like the design. I wouldn't pay that much for it, but I still like it.

A lot better than the 50 sq meters I've got myself stuck in.

  7. (Hi, hope not to get into any trouble posting this thread.)

Does anybody besides me click the links on TV: Property of the day?

    Check this link!:

Mein GOTT! Now that is a house!
I'd sale you my wife for that house. Well, maybe I wouldn't really do that. Perhaps if she were my gf.
Post your fav Samui house from "Property of the Day!
(if the mods make it so, that is)
  8. I took my wife on some of the back roads here in Maenam, pulled over and said to her (she has not been to KP yet), "This is what KP is like. No stupid ring road to be concerned about.

Just nice quiet roads to ride your bike doing no more than 30 kph or less, enjoy the scenery, eat at the local diner, shop at the local mom and pop shop."

    Am I right!?

  9. I attended a demo class once and quite frankly, was completely lost.

Seems your method is to teach the characters and read, read read.

I'm not saying this is bad at all but I would suggest that you set up a special demo class for newbies that specializes in something at the intro level and will actually teach them something that they (us potential students) will take home with us.

I was put into a class that was already 4 weeks in progress and completely lost, therefore I joined another school.

I would also suggest that your webpage explain the teaching method you are using.

I noticed your school focuses on reading first were as, my school I attend now focuses on speaking.

(Again, nothing wrong with both methods. Quite frankly, I learned to read and write Japanese first before speaking. At the least, I wanted to order from a menu in the local noodle shop tongue.png Later came the speaking.)

Thank you very much for your feedback MantisMan. Let me guess, the school you attend now is using transliteration? Must be as otherwise you would not know how to read what is written in your book. At Walen we believe that this is a totally wrong approach to learning Thai. You will regret later as you will have to learn the alphabet again and by then you might already have bad habits and mispronounce a lot words as it is so common among those who learn Thai using transliteration. Your observation that our school focuses on reading is not accurate, in order to be able to read the material in the books you need to be able to read Thai, how otherwise can we teach you? Once you are done with the alphabet class you go to book 1 there you learn to speak and read. It is a much better and ultimately much faster approach. Also classes go on a loop, we revise all work till you know it, nobody else teaches like we do, this system really works. I would be happy to benchmark your progress in Thai against another student learning having the same number of lessons at our school and see who speaks and reads Thai better after one year. I bet that it would be the Walen student.

    Hello again,

I don't disagree with your teaching methods per say, but I really do think you need to re-think your Demo classes.

Most first timers such as myself, at that time I did the observation class, will be completely lost because as you say,

" in order to be able to read the material in the books you need to be able to read Thai," as was my case.

Putting someone in that kind of class for the first time, especially if it's already a few weeks or months in progress, is bound to lose you potential customers.

As I said, you may want to re-think and re-do your Demo/Observation classes to fit with a total beginner of the Thai language.

Create a Demo class that will actually teach the potential student something that they can take home as a tool and will remember.

    Good luck!

  10. As a rule of thumb anything below the highest high water mark (HWM) is deemed "Crown Foreshore" & is normally the property of the state.

    HTH

    Interesting. Learn something new everyday.

So, for example, if we take that last pic by SJ with the recliners, they can set way down to the water mark?

In the pic, seems to be about half a foot from where they are already set up on the dry sand, so that means, I can set my beach towel right there in front of them, and besides getting wet by the waves coming in, they can't do anything about it, correct?

I tried Google and did not get much from that (Crown Foreshore).

Still trying to get my brain to understand this concept.

  11. I was wondering, while we are at it, and I hope not to take the topic way out in left field, but how much of the beach can a resort claim?

That last picture of the benches and umbrellas up above by Samuijimmy reminded me of this question that's been nagging me.

Are there actually "private beaches" in Thailand?

I thought the King owns all the land and beaches?

By law, how far can they go from the resort and claim?

Lastly, again if you notice that last picture by Samuijimmy, they go even one step further during the evenings and put tables with candles, even claiming more beach were one has no choice but to either walk in the water to get past or just walk through the crowd of tables with people eating, them looking at you and wondering, "what the hell is that guy doing walking here while I'm sucking down my glass of red?"

    Sorry if I'm off topic.

  12. My wife is due for arrival in Koh Samui in January. She is coming straight from Hong Kong.Anything to be worried about?

Yes, the bird flu (H7N9 Influenza) cases in Hong Kong lately. wink.png

Sent from my iPad using ThaiVisa app

Just to let you know, my wife has safely arrived as of one week ago, disease free I might add.

You can come out of your house and play if you like.

  14. "My gf is complaining that a certain nationality has swept the isles empty of fresh food in both BigC and Tesco, calling them grasshoppers. Today the cloud has moved on to Makro..."

You're talking about the cheese and packaged sandwich meats, correct?

FYI, Locust is a term that is being used by Hong Kong Chinese towards Mainland Chinese. It's not meant to be nice.

They are in a War of words at the moment.

  15. Great job Mantisman

    - too many ppl in that situation would have ignored another mangy cat rather than taking time to get on here and seek help

Looks like Bruno has had a lucky break in 2014 - thanks Mole

    Thank you for your kindness.

Firstly, like to thank everybody with their helpful advise.

Secondly and mostly, thanks to Mole. He came by twice in one day.

I managed to get him caged within an hour using roasted chicken bits in the cage and immediately called Mole again who was kind enough to pick him up.

I'm glad that he found the help he needed.

Under different circumstances, I would have done it myself.

I've got two dogs back in Hong Kong and have had pets all my life.

I just couldn't do much this time around.

    THANKS MOLE!!!

    I owe you a dinner!

  16. As a tourist I love the hype of Chaweng but my favourite beaches are Maenam and Bang Po to visit during the day, especially lunch and a swim at Bang Po.

Like he said. Maenam and Bang Por for the quietness and solitude.

Choeng Mon has the best sand and water. Not too many people and best for people watching.

Now, on the other hand, if you want to see bare breast, female version that is, you've got a good chance at Chaweng.

I've seen a few at Choeng Mon as well.........Take you pick.

  17. Cause and effect;

    Being poor doesn't cause littering and polluting per se;

"Is this some kind of cultural thing?

    Is it laziness?

    Lack of parental teaching?

    Lack of common sense?

    Lack of government campaigning?

    Lack of pride and humility?

    Lack of decency?"

But all these combined do create poverty though.

It's not the poverty perse, but the association of littering and dumping trash.

They seem to go hand in hand and I cannot seem to comprehend why.

Perhaps on my next visit with the bale of rice and bottle of Rice Whisky, I'll bring them some plastic garbage bags as well.

Did you manage to get a photo of the Komodo dragon when you 1st visited this site would be interested to see or was it the common variety Monitor lizard. I would suggest only give these worker's plastic bags you are encouraging them to be lazy by feeding them whisky.

I'm sorry about that. It was a Monitor lizard.

And yes, you're right about the whisky. I thought the whiskey would break the ice, but you're correct.
