  1. Brewster, Surely you have a few business ideas to throw her way? She seems ripe for the pickng....don't let everyone else bleed her dry...

She should buy a couple of dozen cheap condos at about 750K each and rent them out to students and have a good monthly income with her money invested in a property portfolio that is only going up and up.

So did Tulips and then South Sea Company shares. More recently US property after 2008 demonstrates the risk in believing this. Ask anyone who has bought a condo in Phuket in the last 10 years whether they could sell it for a profit, 50% capital loss is more realistic.

The next global recession will most likely occur within the next two years and no amount of funny money (QE) or negative interest rates is going to stop a collapse in bubble activities, property included.

You are talking about areas that got caught up in property bubbles.... I can assure you now that Korat is far from in a property bubble.... Rises here have been slow but steady, and not crazy like Phuket and BKK. Those are the places that went insane and those are the places that will suffer.

These are not holiday homes or permanent residencies I am talking about, the universities will always be here and the students will always need somewhere cheap to live.

This is a smart investment that is future economy proof. Korat is emerging fast, but luckily the land and property prices have remained in stability.

Also, these are long term investments with a passive income, and we all know the economy is alweays up and down.... Everything recovers, so as long as you don't need to sell anytime soon (and why would you) then you are in no danger. Property fluxuation only affects those who must sell or can not rent out.... In the areas mentioned above, there has been much over-development over the years and that makes things hard to shift both as sales or rentals, and in a supply and demand economy...........

I can pretty much vouch for that, I live in Korat city, so i can see what you mean. Phuket, Pattaya, Bkk property is well overpriced for what you get, but the price of property in Korat moves along at a nice slow steady pace. Korat isn't a tourist city, but its definitely on the way up, big things are happening here slowly.
  2. It seems like its only us farangs that are worrying about it, thais cannot see farther than tomorrow. I suppose they are used to living without it, more than us. In our area, i really don't know where all the water came from for songkran? We have a dribble coming into our tanks, but they are on the streets with hoses chucking out shedloads of it. Where do they get it from? from a stinky klong behind, i suppose.

"It seems like its only us farangs that are worrying about it, thais cannot see farther than tomorrow."

"Us farangs" blah, blah, blah. "Thais cannot" blah, blah, blah.

The only time some farangs "see" something is if it may be an imminent inconvenience for them. And then of course T.I.T. is to blame. And this clarity of vision only works in Thailand. Apparently in farangland every leak is repaired within minutes, give or take a few decades.

Every day more than 3.3 billion litres of treated water 20 per cent of the nation's supply and 234 million litres a day more than a decade ago are lost through leaking pipes in England and Wales. The water lost would meet the daily needs of 21.5 million people.

    http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/water-torture-3300000000-litres-are-lost-every-single-day-through-leakage-2034999.html

Imagine Manhattan under almost 300 feet of water. Not water from a hurricane or a tsunami, but purified drinking water 2.1 trillion gallons of it.

That's the amount of water that researchers estimate is lost each year in this country [the US] because of aging and leaky pipes, broken water mains and faulty meters.

    http://www.npr.org/2014/10/29/359875321/as-infrastructure-crumbles-trillions-of-gallons-of-water-lost
So you think an 'imminent inconveniance' (as you put it), of having NO WATER, is ok? It certainly will be inconvenient to NOT have any water, but it isn't 'us farangs' that is throwing it all down the streets, is it?

I really don't see why you had to go off on one about me saying 'us farangs', i am not a Thai, i am a foreigner here, so that makes me a farang....its easy....so please go pick on someone else, this farang doesn't give a sh/t what you think...khao jai?

  3. Indeed it won't. I know sarcasm intended but get this...

    ..you..won't..make..any..difference..

But you x 100, 1k, 10k, 100k will make a huge difference. By being concerned you can make that difference.

4. When a tanker was delivering water to a friend's house, a thai girl literally begged the lorry driver to sell her some water (10 days waiting for a delivery is the norm here), so he filled her tank up, soon as he was gone, she was out watering the garden with it....leaving the hose running, while she chatted with her neighbour!! grr, grr, and thrice grrr.

  5. I'll have some...its so bad here, they are selling it from tanker lorries. Some haven't had water in their taps for 10 days. But the Thais can still chuck it around like water!! ....like water, get it? Ok, i'll get my coat.

  6. Slightly off-topic: A few years ago when applying for retirement extension our bank funds of B800,000 had been in one bank for more than six months. On the day of the application the exchange rate had reduced enough to create a shortfall of B30,000 when the calculation was made.

We were allowed to transfer that B30,000 from a UK bank to make up the shortfall and the application was successful on the same day.

Surely 800,000 baht in a thai bank is 800,000 no matter what the exchange rate does? Am i missing something?

My 800,000 deposited stays the same, obviously plus interests, how can it lose value?

  7. They should have a record of my police report I made 8 years ago. I gave it to the Embassy in order to get a new passeport.

You could maybe go to the police and make a new report that you have just lost your old passport, you get your report, and by the time they find out, you would be long gone, and will have left the Kingdom. And you won't be comng back for 10 years at least....its might be worth a try.

I would not go so far as to say one should never lie to officialdom. However, doing so is a serious business. You had better have a damn good reason, and be sure the lie cannot easily be discovered. In this case, a one-day-old police report would not be very consistent with an eight-year-old passport. Further, it helps the OP little. The important information is the passport number used for the original entry. If he knows that, no police report will be necessary (I think). If he does not, a false police report is not going to facilitate the process of finding the record of his entry.

He has run out of options, that was just one on offer, nobody is forcing him to take it....if he wants sound advice, Thai Visa is the last place to look....a lawyer is the best option, we all know that.

  9. And yes I did pay the asking price but only cos the missus insisted she wanted to see the exhibit, but it totally ruined my day as I was fuming

Yes it's always a difficult one that, do you roll over against your better judgement and thus avoid any bad feeling even though deep down you really want to do an about turn. I think many of us have to make that choice.

I would do the about turn, but let anyone else go in if they want. Except for maybe Wat Prat Gaow (?) too important to not go see that...zoos can go do one, i will never pay over the odds for a zoo.

  10. Many are too lazy to check or even care....Once at Global House asked if they had UPVC windows and the guy said Mai Mee........he was actually leaning on the piles of boxes with the UPVC windows in!!!

Can't blame them for their 300 baht a day wage and zero chance to climb up the ladder. Too many people here feel that they are going nowhere and act to it.

Wrong of course, but every one makes his own choice.

Imagine being sales staff at Big C, Tesco or 7 and never being able to buy a house, a car, a decent education for your kids, go on holiday, etc... Why move your behind for a farang shopper who want a cup for his girlfriend? Mai mee!

Because its his job to serve customers....its not the foreigners fault he works there, he should have paid more attention in school!!
  11. I re-newed my passport in December, from the day of my appointment at Trendy House, it was a 13 day turn around, delivered to my door. Its easy to get it delivered to your home, just phone DHL, at their distribution centre, and give them your address, and your delivery number. It is far quicker than waiting for it to go back to Trendy, then getting an appointment to go get it. You should have plenty of time to get the new passport. I had less than 7 weeks before my extension, did it with a month to spare....

  12. She sounds like a right scammer tbh...

While it maybe easy to overspend on one credit card, to max out 6 + another one that doesn't even belong to her is a huge red flag imo

I would advise you to walk away from her as you probably have only heard 10% of this story so far..... But I know you won't because , she's different.... :)

...and he says he will marry her in the future....doh!

  13. Touch wood.....i have never had a visit from immigration, or the police. Never had any problem at immigration either, nothing that going and making another photo copy didn't cure. I have never bribed them, apart from paying 500 baht for a certificate of residency, but if you don't pay, you don't get.

Do you people steal cars, or rob banks or something?

A lot of people seem to get refused for this, and refused for that, because of missing paperwork, or worse, just having the wrong attitude. Think ahead, get what they want BEFORE going there, and be hassle free. cheers.

Same for me, almost 30 years in Thailand, no problems at all from police or immigration, even never anybody have been asking for a ID, lived most of the time in Bangkok, but now for 7 years outside bangkok, still no problem

Same as driving, even at night, when i am at a police check-point, police come to the window, "sawadee krap" to him, and he waves you through, never been pulled over.

Like you in 20 years I have never had a problem at immigration, either in Bangkok or Chiang Mai, it makes you wonder why some people end up on the police radar.
I'm sure its because they don't check ahead. They go in there, and started saying "I didn't need that last year", probably loudly. Then a few F words, and a bang on the table ( seen that before), and the officers just think, he aint getting his visa today, no matter what paperwork he gets...hahaha.

Several years ago, a NZ guy i know, ( he has a bit of a temper) called me to say he was sent away for papers, 15kms, then he got to immo with that, then they asked for more, and repeated it 3 times....because he got angry, cursed them , banging his fists on the desk the first time. He just couldn't fathom out it was him, not them that was the problem.

I stay at my girlfriends apartment she rents..... What is the certificate of residency and us that something I should get.... I visit on tourist visas staying for 3 month periods but will be getting a non O visa this year
Its just a proof of where you live, so you can get things like bank accounts, and driving licences, etc.

If you have a yellow book, (or tabian baan) as its called in thai, you don't need to get a certificate of residency...another thing, don't just go and get one, and expect it still to be valid months later. Only get it a day or two before you need it. Cheers.

Like you in 20 years I have never had a problem at immigration, either in Bangkok or Chiang Mai, it makes you wonder why some people end up on the police radar.

There is always a first time!

I have never had problems except long waiting times at immigration, but I can expect problems any time. They did ask me to ask the owner of the house I live in to register me. She hasn't done that yet.

My neighbours (Koreans) had a visit by the police a few weeks ago,

One of my friends said the same as you. "What do people do wrong?' and so on. "I speak excellent Thai, if they stop me I will just joke with them."

Well, I don't wish him anything bad, but I could say "som nam na". He was stopped quite randomly and asked to produce passport with visas. He didn't have it on him, but was allowed to show it the next day at the local police station.

    Never say never!

Of course there can always be a first time, but i was there doing my extension only 2 weeks ago, and had my new passport, and old passport. I told them i needed my stamps put in the new one, they just did it, no problem.

You said your friend "didn't have his passport on him", so he flouts the law? Another reason to have a problem then, eh? hmm. So easy to just carry a laminated copy.

Well the problem with you analysis is that they never ask for the same information twice, simply because they don't know what they want or they can't remember what they made up the last time.

This type of activity is on the increase, the current political situation is the problem I am afraid.

It doesnt happen to me, or my twin brother. I phone the day before going, find out what they need, its not hard mate.

Sorry, but I really don't know what goes wrong with some guys, maybe its their attitude or something, a little bit of Thai, and a wai goes a long way.

  19. All seems ok in Korat city....but we have a pump and tank with city water, and well water, i went to check on my other house a few days ago, and the well water has more pressure now than ever. Because most have switched to city water, and cannot use the well water, but now the city water is weak.....shh, maybe because i water my grass twice a day.
