Thailand to tax residents’ foreign income irrespective of remittance
sqwakvfr replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
Did you earn 40 credits for Social Security? Was FICA deducted from your paycheck? Did you work with a Social Seurity # or a TIN? What social services did you not have access to? Just about anyone can obtain food stamps, rental assistance regardless of immigration status. I know a number of former US resdients who never became citizens who are happily living in other countries who are collecting Social Security Checks and some are even collecting State Retirement checks. -
Thai Police: is their reputation deserved?
sqwakvfr replied to Watawattana's topic in General Topics
Mainly because getting hired as a police officer is long and complicated. It can take from 6 months to a year to at least get to the police academy. It's not like McDonalds: Apply on Monday, get hired on Tuesay and quit on Wednesday. It took me 8 months from application to police academy. Then another year on probation to become a permanent employee. Most police officers in their first year are on their best behavior. I am strictly talking about how most US Police Departments hire officers. 1) Written test 2) Board Interview 3) Physical Agility Test 3) Medical Exam 4) Psych Exam 5) Polygraph test 6) Background investigation 7) Final Chief Interview 😎 Police Academy. Not so easy to quit after going through all that which is time consuming. All this that an applicant does is not compensated time. I do not know what the Thai Police hiring process is like. -
Thailand to tax residents’ foreign income irrespective of remittance
sqwakvfr replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
Ok. Then what do I get in return from the Thai Government for paying my fair share in taxes? At least in the US I can apply for public assistance like food stamps or if I get disabled I can apply for SSDI. It's almost like "foreigner you pay but get nothing". I know it's to pay for safe roads, sidewalks and the excellent emergency services like police and fire???? -

This type of statement sounds like something US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen would say. -

As an American I have had earned income while working in other countries. At the time IRS rules allowed me to have almost $100,000 of that income exluded from US Income taxes. It is known as the exclusionary rule. -

Hypothetical conversation between a Thai Revenue Employee and a foreign resident: "What was your income from the US last year?" "None of your businessa and if want to know contact the IRS". "What is the IRS?". "Information Release Service". -
Thai Police: is their reputation deserved?
sqwakvfr replied to Watawattana's topic in General Topics
Poor training and mostly importantly poor pay usually results in poor performance and bad reputation. In the 1980's the Miami Police Department was paying many of it's officers $18,000 to $21,000. Hence the corruption(fueled by the drug trade) was rampant. I retired a long time ago and most agencies that pay it's people a decent or generous wage have few cases of rampant corruption. I am not hopeful for any major changes in Amazing Thailand and it's police. -
What, if anything, would make you move back Home?
sqwakvfr replied to bob smith's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
1) If I am forced to reveal my US Income and how much in taxes I have paid to the US Government to any Thai Governmental Agency 2) If I am forced to pay taxes on US income that has already been taxed. -

The Social Disintegration Threatened by Mass Immigration in Britain
sqwakvfr replied to Social Media's topic in World News
More than taco stands: Last year, over 37,400 Chinese migrants entered the US illegally via its southern border, more than 50 times the number in 2021, according to data from the US Customs and Border Protection. Channel News Asia in Singapore sent a reporter to follow some of these "migrants" or illegals and they estimate the actual number is over 40K. Both Britain and the US are in similar positions: Little controls of it's borders. Passports and Visa"s? Why bother. -
You have $5,000 a month in the USA
sqwakvfr replied to Cryingdick's topic in US & Canada Topics and Events
1. 60 and older means 60 or older . 2. "a lot of people". I have never knonw anyone who beleive 3000 is almsot 5000 3. I am not complainig. You are. 4. 12% to 17% is probably the marginal tax rates for this AGI but the amont decucted from my gross has alwasys been more. This was my point. Deductions and actual taxes paid are usually different amounts. 5. $10 is not a big deal. But future increases could be more. -

1. Original statement: My age(60 and older) So I should have stated my actual age. Got it. Not that there will be next time but ok. 2. 3000 is not almost 5000. 3. I am not making big deal out of anything. I am just respondig to you. 4. I am talking about deductions from gross pay and not how much one actually pays in income taxex. 5. So what is your definition of something over $175. Because you said 3000 is almost 5000. Also, you started this. I made an initial comment on this sujbect that was never directed at you. -

I am over 60 does not imply I am over 60. It means I am over 60. Almost 5000 could mean 4999. Also, why do you care wha my net pay is or was? Net pay can very based upon individual financial circumstance but in most cases it is between 20 to 25 % less. Part A and B starts at $175 but could be more because I am not 65 yet. By the time I hit 65 it definitely will be more. -

I do not imply. I say what i mean and mean what I say. How is$5,000 per month net pay in anyway low income? Does this mean your net pay is $10,000? You know what net pay is? Net is in many case 20 to 25 % less than gross pay. Also, Mediare only covers inpatient treatment. Out patient is out of pocket unless one purchases a Medicare policy. Of course you know this, right. I never impied I was over 60 because I am over 60. -

"Incidentally, I grew up in Californian as well, and had hundreds of thousands of dollars in "free" medical under Medical, which with your low income and lack of saving you would likely Ok. If you did not imply then why did you say "I have low income"? -

sqwakvfr replied to Cryingdick's topic in US & Canada Topics and Events
Please show me where I said "i have low income"? Also, I said "take home" income. As you know this is after taxes and other decuctions have been applied. Therefore, take home pay of $5,000 is low to you so what is your income since you have recieved "hundreds of thousands" of free medical care? -

sqwakvfr replied to Cryingdick's topic in US & Canada Topics and Events
When did I sayi have "low income" or "low savings"? CA is a big place. Barstow and Los Angeles are like two different countries. Many could easily live in Bartow but many choose not to for many reasons. Many parts ot Los Angeles Country are still higly desireable and many want to be there. Hence the cost of living is high. Since you had "a lot free medical care" you have been lucky. "hundreds of thousands of" free medical care? How? Medicare, SSI, SSDI or even Medical? You claimed no income or low income to get all this free medical care? -

sqwakvfr replied to Cryingdick's topic in US & Canada Topics and Events
"in the US is you have no savings medical is free". Not true. Free medical, if avaiable depending on what state or county one is is in, is dependendt on income. No income or really low income then low cost medical care is available. There are many clinics that serve the poor but the wait times can be long. Also the median price of a home in my home state of CA is just uner 1 million dollars. If I had liquid savings near that amount i would never landed in LOS except for annual vacation or holiday. -
I just read an article from one of the financial rags that the US Debt just passed 34 Trillion Dollars(I can't even count how many zeros that is). So I did some reaseach and the average interest rate on this debt is between 3 and 4 percent. I am a numbers guy and still cannot imagine how much the interest would be. My guess is the interest alone is close to 1 Trillion dollars per year. Also, the latest US GDP is under 30 Trillion dollars. In essence the US Government violates just about every guidance about financial responsibility. It has more debt and spends way more than it takes in. I am 60 so by the time I kick the bucket the truly painful consequences of this incredible debt might not have started yet. At least I hope not. This a problem that was created by both Repbulican and Democratic administrations. So the blame is shared by all. Will the US Dollar everntully become like Monolpoly money? Or will it take barrels of dollars just to by bread? Just wondering because I got the smallest refund from lmy latest US Federal tax return. I paid almsot 14% in federal income taxes based upon my AGI and I only spend 1 month back in the US. I am certainly not a "high income" earner and consider myself to be in the bottom of the middle class. Or is this something most do not care about?

Yes. I take home almost that amount and after 7 years in LOS it might be time for a change. The only real concern I have is the cost of health insurance for my age group(60 and older. I checked and without the subsidey my monthly premium would range between $600 to over $1,000. Everything is doable and manageable. -
Singapore turbulent flight: Aussie survivor’s desperate plea
sqwakvfr replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
I believe this will be key element of any possilbe civil litigation against SIA over this incidenet. This is from the preliminary TSIB repornt: "The investigation appears to show that it took 11 seconds for the seatbelt sign to be switched on after the turbulence began. The pilots took over control from the autopilot. The ordeal for passengers and crew continued" It probably took 11 seconds for either the FO or Captain to turn on the Seat Belt sign because they were busy maintiaing control of the aircraft but lawyers for the dead or serverly injured might not care. -
Could you imagine being questioned by a Thai Immigration Officer "you must be working because in the last 6 months you have deposited 10,000 per month into your account every month?" Also, this could mean banks are reporting the bank transactions of foreign account holders???? Maybe or maybe not. This entire "tax foregn income" concept might have some unintended consequnces. As always in LOS: Do first, think later.
