Not possible in Australia, they will only issue "OA" through the Thai Embassy in Canberra. Easiest way is to come in visa exempt and optain an "O" Visa whilst in Thailand. As stated an agent will be very helpful for this initial "O" Visa.

I would go for the X Max, know a few that have them and they are more than satisfied. I am based in Chiang Mai and they use them in the mountains for quite long rides. Very surprised that no one has mentioned " TWIST Chiang Mai" ( was Twist by David), the owner is David from "Davids Kitchen". A great place to eat with the same great food and service you would have expected from Davids Kitchen. The food is a little more fusion but well worth the visit.
