  1. No the fruit was called that because the Portuguese ("Franks") brought them here.

By your logic "mandarin" would be racist because we named a fruit after it?

So yes, "farang" is directly equivalent to "Caucasian".

The only time it's derogatory is when the speaker doesn't like us.

If you hear it used in a derogatory tone of voice frequently you should probably try to associate with a classier group of Thais.

Caucasian is an international and anthropologically accepted turn of phrase for a white skinned Westerner,Farang isn't!

It has nothing to do with how "classy" a group of Thais may or may not be,surely you can't be dim enough to believe such nonsense?

  2. I'm pretty sure that La Monita has a parked van set up downstairs and next to Gourmet Market in Siam Paragon these days?

Certainly a Tex-Mex place and I'm sure I only spotted it after reading about how good La Monita was on here,it certainly sounded good flicking through the menu but never got around to trying it!

  3. I've lived here a long time in many condos. The condos here vary mostly in 'style' and cost but NOT in build quality. They have different names on them and different looks, but they are all more or less poorly constructed, hot boxes. Thin walls, cheap concrete, lack of quality all around. The best 'values' in Thai condos tend to be in the older condos which have good condo management. Condo management in Thailand is a HUGE problem (funds being misappropriated, ill managed, maintenance being neglected, etc.). The new condos will be falling apart in a 2 to 3 years with management having changed multiple times and people moving out and trying to sell, reduction in services etc. Condos are NOT generally a good investment (or good to own to live in) in Thailand. Just like so many other things here, it is about image over substance. By the way, I've lived in that area in a condo and I now live in a 'luxury' condo in a different part of Bangkok. 75,000/month. But, it's STILL poorly built with numerous problems troubling the nice facade. :-) Another problem is that Thais (most of the owners will legally/necessarily be Thai) don't understand the concept of shared financial responsibility. They are cheap and selfish - far more than average westerners. At the board/committee meetings, they will spend most of the time complaining of fees and trying to reduce services, turning half the lights off, limiting the gym hours, using only a portion of the elevators, etc. Think of your typical cheap Chinese who has a BMW in the car park but lives in a dump quality of life. That's what you're buying into when you buy a condo. So, renting is a superior option, but best is to rent a house or townhouse if you can. Because even renting, if your building is full of Thais, chances are they don't share your values. They value style, not true quality. They will happily live like animals in the dark as long as the outside sign of the building looks nice and clean and shiny.

Surely you must be aware that for that sort of money or a little more, you could get a 4-5 bedroom pool villa somewhere like Bangna?

I really don't get the fascination with condos,is it an American thing because I have a 3 bed 3 bath 240m2 house on the airport link for less than half your rent and mine is one of the most expensive!blink.png

  4. Ok,so I've been a bit waylaid due to Christmas and New year but I'm now going to try my best to sample a different Sunday Roast every week and post an independent review of it on here. All other reviews or even conflicting reviews are absolutely welcome, hopefully between us all we can come up with the best dinner or dinners in The Big Mango!biggrin.png

First up is The Queen Victoria,an English Bar at the other end of Soi Cowboy to Soi 23 and Asok/Petchaburi BTS/MRT.

So a new-ish looking bar, pretty easy to find once you've walked down Soi cowboy, perusing the goods on offer!laugh.png

Has 4 big screens with all the Premier League Football on,bit quiet but has a great choice of Lamb,Chicken,Beef or Pork, the big 4!I went for the Lamb as I don't know anywhere else that sells it in Bangkok and it's my favourite.

It was quite thin slices of Lamb but very good nevertheless, pot of Mint Sauce arrived on the table beforehand which was great,no gravy boat but a reasonable amount of gravy over the meat and veg, standard roast potatoes and al dente vegetables.Broccoli,Carrots,Cauliflower etc.

All in all good value,I think it was 399 for the lamb with the other meats 3-350 baht.Would definitely return, plus the walk home could be great for dessert, which reminds me I had apple and rhubarb crumble with vanilla ice-cream which was also very good.

Any other reviews welcome and encouraged!wai.gif

  5. If you understood the geology of fracking, you would not be concerned. There is little to no chance of poisoning ground water. Just more fear tactics from the ecological movements.

Ya right. I'm betting your living comes from some aspect of the petro biz?

I thought "Fracking" was the equivalent of planting trees?whistling.gif

  6. Your examples are synonyms, mia = mistress, panraya = wife. So not synonyms.

But I will admit to the occasional snigger at the ignorant.

Your ignorance in itself is not pathetic, but your continued assertions of misinformation thinking you are correct are indeed snigger-worthy.

There is no difference in meaning between mia and panraya, only difference of register, as with "dog": sunak (สุนัข), as opposed to the informal maa (หมา).

AND, there is nothing racist about the word "farang" no matter the nationality of the speaker. Or do you think just using words like "Asian" or "middle-eastern" to describe someone's appearance or ethnic background is inherently racist?

But "Farang" isn't the Thai equivalent of a racial marker,as in "Caucasian" now,is it?laugh.png

It means Guava,it's like calling a mixed race man or woman a "Coconut" in the West!

  7. Perhaps the US factory and jobs data giving the US$ a lift.

US data is mostly lies, official but lies.

Please share why and provide your data. Thanks.

Let's put it this way. If the BLS used the same method to calculate unemployment rates today as was used in 1994, the unemployment rate in the US would be around 14%. The Federal government is cooking the books at every turn to try and prop up confidence in a consumer driven economy In other words, they are lying through their teeth.

It was reported this week that there are 91.8 million working age adults in the US that are not in the work force. This is 1978 levels during the height of the recession in the US. Using BLS definitions, when these people lost their unemployment benefits, they were re-classified as being "no longer looking for employment", which removed them from the unemployed roles.. Which we know is utter bunk.

The actual unemployment rate in the US today is around 21-22%,just look at last Friday's woeful Non-Farm Payrolls print!

  9. Why are so many wasting time giving advice and asking questions about teaching?????

The Op wants advice about working online.

    That's all.

    Stay on topic.

    It's not about you.

This could be a valuable thread to some who do not want to teach.

    I wondered about that.

What's happened to the advice that you need a work permit and a correct visa to work on line? It's considered employment. Yet another strange requirement.

I remember some poor guy got busted as it was presumed his maid spoke to Immigration, and he was deported.

The lesson learned is...don't have a snitch for a maid if you work online, job done!thumbsup.gif

  10. Since I'm the one who often has money in my wallet (and not my husband) he often tells the wait staff at our favorite restaurants to "give the bill to my Sugar Mama" That's caused a stir at a several of our favorite places as they've digested a new English phrase and attempted to digested it into a Thai equivalent, i.e. what do you call the female partner of a relationship where it appears that she's the one with the money and calling the shots?

    Mug?whistling.gif

  11. Your previous post was removed from view as it was over the top and used foul language. We don't allow that in this forum. We also don't allow public comments on moderation. FYI.

I've been to soooo many beaches, I'd hate to try to count them. Hua Hin does not have the best beach in the world. But it's OK. And yes, I've been to Blackpool.

You must have had a bad experience with the beach vendors there. I've been several times and never had a problem.

So it seems that everyone agrees that Hua Hin's a dive full of skanky hookers but is Cha Am paradise or Blackpool...confused?blink.png

  12. A tragic story that just re-iterates very clearly why you should never get involved with drunken Thais or fights between locals,as a foreigner you will always be the one remembered no matter what part you played in the scene unfolding!

  13. I don't know what your friend really likes .

My sister and husband were entertained by dear friends , the husband a foreign consul .

Through his knowledgeable Thai connections , they were taken to amazing sex shows only known about by Thais .

My sister described to me sitting beside a beautiful young couple making love , she said " The girl held onto my ankle to steady herself ".

She said it beat everything Patpong or Nana have to offer .

Sounds like a very classy foreign consul,it wasn't one of Berlusconi's "Bunga-Bunga" parties was it?whistling.gif

  14. Hi Mate. You never said how old you are and how old your GF.

Dowry is for marriage not heard of it for engagement, possibly a deposit before the you marry, 100k is the norm and a piece of gold.

I am married and my wife has 16yr old daughter who I consider my daughter, she loves me very much. She has boy friend 19 we just had his family around to negotiate the dowry I stay out of it but my wife keep coming out to tell and ask me what I think. My daughter is young, virgin and a beauty B/F family love her and want her in family. I told my wife to go for 500k they start at 50k then up it to 100k plus 1bt neck chain, then my wife wants me to come in and sit with her and daughter so I do. My wife translates for me I tell them this is not a pathname market thing they are getting a good educated young lady so I say 350k they up it to 150k I come in with 300k they come back with 200k so I give a good talk and say last price is 250k they go for it so smiles all around my daughter puts arm around me. The B/F mother comes with the necklace for the deposit hand shakes all around and it is done so all good, they are going to Finnish school before the marriage.

You will need to talk with your lady mate and make some of the rules, best of luck

I'm willing to put in a bid of 300k and I haven't even seen her yet!whistling.gif

  15. Some of you posters on here crack me up biggrin.png my sister - 48 - in the UK and has never had a relationship with a guy over 30. She's pretty independent and says she wouldn't want some old fart trying to lord it over her, together the fact the younger guys have no kids/emotional baggage. She said she would never come to a place like this as it would be full of old wrinkly men sitting stonefaced (no conversation) with his child bride playing with her 'Hello Kitty' 'phone laugh.png

Tell your friend to go with the meet.up group. At least she'll have a selection. Face to Face thumbsup.gif

I can imagine her waddling around in a miniskirt with too much make up on,trying to compete with young girls in some seedy nightclub!bah.gif

  16. Play to your strengths, take a girl out for a date to a Thai restaurant and order everything in Thai, introduce her to real Thai food and make sure her glass is always full of wine or Thai beer or whatever she is drinking.

By the end of the night any European woman will leave you in no doubt if she is interested in you,so then you invite her back to yours for the proverbial "Coffee or something"!

Always worked for me in Europe but then I am a very "Hansum Man",or so all the Thai girls tell me!
