I dont mean to offend so please dont take this the wrong way - its not meant to sound patronising... I keep seeing you posting new questions around the forum asking for all kinds of advice - if you have enough money, how much for a condo with a swimming pool, could you build 2 and sell one & maybe turn that into a business, where to live etc.

You've said that you are disabled and that you've never visited Thailand before, yet you have a substantial amount of money to create many opportunities for yourself.

The reason I post this is because I dont see what the great rush is, do you need to make this move quickly?

Have you considered visiting LoS for a long holiday 6-12 months, travel around to the areas that intrest you or you've heard others talking about, spend time getting a feel for the place, the people, the climate, see how easy or difficult you find it is as a disabled person in LoS and spend time speaking to others that are already living or working or have been holidaying there for years and can see how the country is changing.

Although you will get alot of invaluable advice from this site - Im sure Im not alone in thinking that you would learn so much more just from a few months actually out on the road (as it were).

  2. toiletries and basics = local family mart, 7/11 or any other roadside convenience

as for silverware: on my first trip to chaingmai i seem to remember a ruddy great night market / undercover night plaza where you could get hold or almost anything from a new pair of knickers to 6ft x 3ft charcoal portraits... :o

if you still cant find what youre looking for - grab the next person (thai/farrang) that wanders near you and ask if they know where you could find x, y & z

    hope this helps

  3. this guys rantings are very similar to a post not so long ago - where the guy said that 99% of postings and advice were inaccurate and gave everyone a slating... it was a long diatribe that started with young thai monks fighting over girls, then idiot farrangs and the TV site, he finished his post by saying something along the lines of

"if the all powerfull george wants to ban me - i dont care - i would laugh"

the thread's been deleted - thankfully - but it certainly seems that someone is feeling disgruntled.

    ahh bless :o

  4. a very simple thing to do would be to CTL,ALT,DEL > Task Manager > Processes and then arrange in order of CPU or Mem Usage.

this will list what the machine is doint at that time - usual System Idle Process should be above 90%... then try opening word again and see what happens.

its most likely running another process (sinister or otherwise) in the background that is sucking up your memory/cpu etc.

    let me know how

  5. Newsflash;

An alien has been spotted in Mae Chan.

The Alien, about 80 cm tall was hovering and when approached by two locals, he declined to be interviewed and hovered away.

    Local police are investigating.

This is an English translation of Thai news so all details may not be acurate.

yet another reason to stay away from that local thai wiskey.. :o

  6. I think the bug spray isn't such a good idea either. If you are living there long term you don't want to be around that stuff daily. It has to be bad for you to take anti-malarials year in and year out. Just look at the Thai's around you. They are not dropping left and right are they? Just know the early symptoms and if you are unluky and get sick treat it early.

No longterm use of anti-malarials cant do you much good - ive always taken malarone before, which are supposed to be the mutts nuts - apart from costing a fortune you can still feel their side effects. Although malarone is one of the best anti-malarials that can be used for treating the illness too - maybe ill keep some in the medicine cabinet just in case eh.

    cheers

  7. you dont need a panic room - they'll already be in the property -

what you need is an electrified razor wire fence, with cctv watchtowers at each corner and biometric security doors... :D

of course you could just get a couple of soi dogs and a big stick - those fkin dogs bark at anything that moves after sundown, including there own tails :o

  8. OK thanks thaibites0

"Very rare to get the type of mossie that carries Malaria here in Ubon town - more prevelent out in the wilds."

Id be in a fairly remote region about 2hrs east on nongkhai town and an hour north of sakhon nakhon - its a few km's away from the mekong river and there are many large lakes there. I think ill have to look into this some more, especially dengue fever. :o

  9. I guess its applicable to all areas but for you farrang guys living in Issan longterm - do you take anti-malarials or just rely on deet etc...?

Ive always taken em for shorter stays, a month or so, but what about when you live in a malarial regions..?

  10. First of all you may be best off starting in the Phuket Forum or doing a search for costs of living etc.

I dont think im qualified to give you advice whether or not you'll have enough money - but thats a fairly substantial amount...

the other thing that im a little confused about is why you would be prepared to put down 60-80k on a property in a country you've not been too before.

So Im guessing that you must already have some work & work permit/visa sorted out - whoever you'll be working for may be best able to advise you.

sorry cant be more help - but you need to wait for some more qualified TV members to reply.

  11. hi, please could you tell me if 22k pounds after tax is a good income to have a great life in thailand

I would of thought so :o

but I guess it depends how much of a "great life in thailand" you're planning to have

Have you been to thailand before or is this a new venture???

Where are you planning on staying?

What dyou intend doing when you're here?

Will you be buying land, building houses, supporting a family???

I think we need some more info to give you the best advice.

  12. I spent just short of a year in thailand travelling all over but spending most of my time in bkk and nongkhai at my then girlfriends family home.

a few holidays later and we were married - in fact its our 1st anniversary on the 15th Sept.

my wife came to england last october and loves it here but neither of us want to stay here longterm - i know a lot of farrangs want to get back to LoS asap but their thai wives would prefer to stay in UK or wherever...

im on this forum daily and yes i do feel jealous - but im also feeling lucky that whilst im still in UK i have the benefit of getting to read on a broad range of subjects and blogs from people that are and have been living in thailand for a long time.... :D

there are truly inspiring tales of farrangs building homes and businesses etc with their thai wives, however there are also a number of stories of farrangs falling on hard times - being taken to the cleaners - or just existing in a daily beer fuled cycle feeling sorry for themselves.... :o

the positive posts i read feed my enthusiasm and i hope that I will learn from the negatives for when myself and the mrs move to LoS for good.
