  1. Sound advice from Seen all Learnt Nothing:

    Im in the UK

    30 years old

    28k in IT

and gagging to move back to thailand with my wife (25yrs)

Ive looked into it and have come to the conclusion that despite us saving all of my wifes salary (250gbp) per week, we would still need to wait another 5 years to give us just over 5m baht - which is the least amount i would consider moving over their with...

and i still reckon that i would have sporadic visits back to UK to save some beans before going back out there.

unless you have a fantastic opportunity drop into your lap or work for a large multinational that will move you over there, i wouldnt even consider pinning any hopes on signing up with an IT agency and relying on that for a stable future...

more so if youre not a fluent thai speaker.

easier said than done i know - earn your crust here and spend it there.... if you find another way of doing it without the capital now.... please, please, please tell me!

  4. This poor guy has found his wife hanging and within 8 posts it gets automatically assumed that she is a (ex-)bargirl.  There is nothing in the report to say she is a bargirl so lets show her and her grieving husband some respect and assume that they were a regular married couple.

Womble, I started off understanding where you were coming from, but then your true views started to show.  I agree that someone who is uneducated will have problems fitting in with senior level management at a function, if they were discussing business etc.  However just because someone is uneducated, it does not mean they are foul mouthed and classless as you seem to suggest.  Similarly some people in senior position act like complete knobheads at sales conferences etc when they have had a few beers.  You should judge the individual person, not sterotype.

You ask why someone would want a relationship with an uneducated prostitute.  Maybe because they have fun together and love each other?  Just because they are uneducated does not mean that they are stupid and cannot have a decent conversation about things.  I come from a council estate in England and so would probably not fit in with high level management at a charity ball in the UK, because they would make assumptions based on my accent etc.  You say they/we would not know how to behave at such a function.  I would be polite and courteous.  Is that not how it is done?  And for the record, despite where I grew up, I managed to get a university degree and have a pretty good job which allows me to live comfortably here.  More to the point I have a life outside work and am happy.  How many of these high flying guys can say that.

Quite frankly I would not want a professional and/or well educated Lady, or a decent moral person.  Sounds boring to me.  I want someone who I have fun with, talk with and who makes me happy to be with (good sex also helps  :D ).  I do not want a boring, prudish trophy girl thanks.

You really showed yourself to be a bit of a pompous <deleted> when you listed the sort of women you do not want as a long term partner (BTW they are women, not girls as you describe them).  No divorced women - why?  Maybe there was a very good reason for it.  No children?  Moral, educated women can have kids and be divorced too.  Are they still off the list?  No feminists lol.  God forbid she thought for herself and wanted equality with you old chap.  Lazy and rude I agree with, but that can apply to any class.

You cap your ignorance of things when you say that "Most expats here probobally own their own business like a bar, or something in the tourist sector".  Besides you're poor spelling, where do you get the idea that most expats own bars or tour groups?  Some certainly do, but I bet they are a minority.

The icing on the cake though, that really shows what a hypocritical, snobbish, chauvinistic, class obssessed muppet you really are is that you think it is ok for you to go sleeping with 'brass', but your wife has to be all pure and virginal.

    Morning everyone.....

I see this one is still going then, despite being off-topic, but having re-read the whole thing again I have to say that the above post is Brilliant and says almost everything there is to be said - the whole debate is based on opinions from 2 parties who, on this occassion, will have to agree to disagree.

    IMHO

    :o

  5. as far as i know malarone isnt available in thailand - i got mine from my GP before going away travelling - used malarone on and off throughout cambodia, vietnam, laos and some parts of thailand.

probably the most expensive anti-malarial to use but is constanly praised as being on of, if not the best, anti-malarial to take.... i work in a hospital and was advised to use malarone by a well travelled consultant of tropical diseases etc etc..

id give it the thumbs up - IMHO

  6. i think it depends where in North East you are... near a town or out in the sticks...????

you will obviously need a fairly fast connection if you intend to go down the VoIP telephone route - are you able to find out what adsl services and coverage are available to your location... i guess not otherwise you wouldnt have posted :o

  7. so what is the general census regarding the original posters statement... i take it we are talking about patong!

there seem to be some very mixed opinions....

I stayed in patong for about a month over xmas a few years back then again last september, it had definately changed in that time - didnt feel as friendly

    - maybe coz the xmas season was still a couple of months off. Has it changed drastically since the tsunami - not talking about infrastructure or other rebuilds of bars, shops etc... talking in general.

  8. OK Thanks LivinLOS - I did a search on google and have come up with 2 driving schools in Phuket Town, one of which has a branch in Patong, maybe the same one that you talk about.

20-hour driving course for 3,500 baht. The course comprises 10 two-hour lessons.

Taksina Driving School - Patong Branch

2/12 Phisit Karani Road, A. Kathu

    (opposite Patong municipal offices)

    Phuket 83150

    Cheers anyway

  9. Thai3,

Ever wondered why legitimate applicants have to jump through so many hoops to get a visa? It is because of the activities of those who break the rules and enter the UK for purposes other than those stated on their application.

If it wasn't for these people, legitimate applicants would have a much easier time.

Thankyou - you took the words right outta my mouth....

and ditto what MrBoJ has said too - i dont think anyone on this forum could knock the advice that Scouse has ever dished out.

  10. Can someone please advise me. My thai wife wishes to take some lessons and driving test during our next holiday.

Its most likely that we will stay on Phuket for the beach part of the holiday - probably Patong. A friend of hers did lessons and passed her test in Pattaya.

Does anyone know if there are:

a: driving schools in Patong/Phuket Town?

b: cost per lesson / cost for test

c: if the driving schools offer a 1 or 2 week intensive course

    thanks

PS: she can already drive a manual trans car.

  11. bfore i got married about 6-7000 bht per night of course that included all the trimmings, but now married and she pulls the purse strings :D  about 2000bht per night would be the limit for sure.

a single man envies the married man going home with his woman, the married man envies the single man out with his mates :D

never a truer word said :o

  12. Hi, possibly not the best title ever but couldnt think what to put!  Can anyone help me with suggestions please? I am going to Phuket in a few months and will be there for about 12 months with my husband. He will be working and i will have lots of time on my hands and want to occupy myself but dont know what type of things there will for me to do. I am not a great drinker and dont want to spend all my time in the bars anyway! The things I do like are fairly solitary which wont help me get to know people ( playing on the computer and reading) - God it makes me sound just so boring. I am in my 40,s and hopefully wil be able to get transport to help me get around as we will be based in the Patong area. I like going to the gym and i know there are a few locally but apart from that I'm stuck so any suggestions would be great.

    ever tried scuba diving????

if not get yourself on a try-dive, if you like it sign up for a few courses - it will kill some time in a fantastic way and the home study will keep you occupied too.

plus you could learn the language.... there are loads of things you could do which dont involve becoming a bar fly.

and most of all consider yourself lucky to have a year in LoS to do whatever you want...

  13. a friend of my wifes did this some time ago - ill have to check but...

she went to a tv/ariel type place - and they provided a dirty great satalite dish that sits in her back garden and receives all of the thai channels.

someone at my work has also done the same thing for all the persian channels as she is iranian.

one off payment of about £250 - £450 for dish, install and configure apparently, but couldnt be sure how accurate this is.

  14. blimey... this thread is still going then!

tjames - you're an angry chap are you not?

a rethink on your business approach maybe in order here - im not sure everyone on the forum is interested in your MBA, social stand point, intellectual prowess over subjects such as religion, politics or anything else you mention.

Its hardly going to impress someone looking for a house sitter / handyman is it, they want someone trustworthy, reliable and polite.

Getting your head up your arse over something the Doc said is hardly gonna help matters either.

....thats just my opinion anyway - all the best

  15. Im english and my thai wife uses MSG quite often when cooking - Ive never had any reaction or problem to it, but i guess that doesnt mean im safe! :o

    i will watch this thread

    :D

  16. A liberal cry for justice?

Come on man, about 10% of ThaiVisa is talk about visa's.

We do get to chat about a lot of things that expats encounter when living here, such as pigeon sh1t and rain. Bar girl talk has proved to be a topic that polarizes opinion and brings out the crazies. It has proved problematic here in the past, hence you can go to Barladies.com if you care to.

But mind your step, the toilets are disgusting over there.

This is very true - the old bargirl threads only seem to provoke flaming, and arguing between members.... its seldom usefull and frankly boring.

    IMHO anyway :o
