  1. I'd agree there is a definate problem with the housing market... unless you are already on it. Second homes... be it holiday homes or homes for rent should be taxed at a considerably higher rate... freeing up property and pushing the prices down for thos that dont have one. Renting property is not necessarily problem if the rent is reasonable... but in England you pay the same amount as if you had a mortgage... but of course you get nothing for it. Here in Korea for example.. property prices are not that far off the UK's but rent is considerably cheaper... as it should be!

  2. anyway.... this thread seems to rehash exactly the same nonsense is did last years thread on the 2006 immigration figures.. Robski clearly hasnt developed his argument any further...

is there any point in pointing out that these are the highest immigration figures ever largely due to long term immigrants returning to their country of origin (india, pakistan, poland etc)?

  3. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - the book was heaps better.

The radio series was better, the vinyl albums were better and the BBC TV series was better. ....... There is only one Arthur Dent...... but the books were best.

One that really got me was Dune, if you hadn't read the books (the first trilogy at least) it was probably an entertaining movie, if you had read the series, the film version was very disappointing.

And Sting has to take a special 'over-acting' award ........... "I will kill him"

Anything by Stephen King with two exceptions, all blockbusters.............always crap.

I reckon there are at least 4 good movies made from Stephen King books or stories. Never as good as the books but still pretty good:

    1. Stand By Me - Haven't seen it for a while but I enjoyed it at the time.

    2. Shawshank Redemption - Watched it again last week and still thought it was a good movie.

    3. The Shining - In my opinion and all time classic. But maybe it was the cinematography or maybe Nicholson won me over.

    4. Green Mile - Maybe I need to see it again but it would be far from crappiest movie ever.

I'll stick with the books for Carrie, The Stand, Misery etc.

OK, now I will get off my defensive high horse and get back on topic.....

Blues Brothers 2000 - That movie is an insult to the original and should never have happened! :o

    edit: Spelling

The opening secene in carrie means the movie could never be rated as bad!

  4. Thailand is quite a racist country.... like almost anywhere in east Asia. However the point the OP makes is more to do with class than race. As an English man i can usually tell if someone has low education when in England by the way people talk and carry themselves, this is clearly easier for a Thai in Thailand as the differentation and cultural difference between the well educated and the rural poor is much wider. There are plenty of well educated successfull or even Hi-So short folk with dark skin in Thailand. Thus the discrimination is class not race.... this doesnt make it right, but no different to anywhere else on the palnet!

  5. Oh...... : :D seems im too late too join, ive been away :D:D:D

shame i enjoyed it last year :bah:

i guess the entry rules cannot be bent a little for a commited and not too unskilled performer last season?????

anyway... good luck to you all :o

  6. The 'new' 7 wonders of the world seems to have pricked many people's interest. On the whole I agree with the 7 choices. However, I would have thought Stonehenge was more important than Christ in Rio.

What about the 7 white elephants of the world. The more pointless, wasteful and self indulgent the better.

I'd like to nominate The Millenium Dome in London. 1.2 BILLION POUNDS of public money spent on a project to get Tony Blair's in lights.

Central World has to be in the running. A huge, almost empty, monolith to over spending.

didnt the labour party actually inherit the project from the Tories?

  7. you'll get rain but it wont rain all the time. Ussually a couple of hours a day. first time trip to Bangkok... can only really suggest the obvious... The Grand Palace, take a boat trip on the river, possibly JJ market if u can stand the heat, and stroll around sukhimwit looking at the weirdos, waifs and strays!!

  8. odd thing to want as the daily mail and its sister paper are the worst examples of journalism available in the UK.... (and i include the sun and the star in that as at least they dont pretend to be what they are not). If you want illinformed, self rightious reactionary nonsense then i'm sure you would be able to subscribe to Fox news!

  9. Pattaya is a cattle market. Just visited Pattaya 2 months ago.... what a shock :D

Phuket has much more style, good golf and plenty drinking. And Phuket beaches just blow away Pattaya beaches :o

Don't worry, iv'e been to pattaya for a couple of days! Only three things ive visited in my life left me open mouthed in amazement - scuba diving in the great barrier reef (i drank a lot of salty water!!) the sky line of New York,.. and getting out the bus onto the main street in pattaya. I have no plans to return! Seedy places in resorts are all well and good.. but its nice to escape from them now and again!

    Thanks for the input!

  10. ive been to Ko Samui twice before, its nice but i really want to go somewhere different. Im coming to Thailand with two mates at the end of july, one is adament he doesnt want to go to ko samui again, the other thinks its the best option as the weather will be more reliable then. Our holiday itinery will be mostly dictated by drinking and all that goes with it - but also want things to do in the day like snorkling, golf, fishing trip, boat trip, hire bikes jeep etc. We have 7 nights.

What you think for this time of year,... is phuket going to be a mistake?

  11. Okay i didnt have much luck with my last question, hopefully someone will respond to this one!!

My friends have booked a flight from BKK to Phuket through air asia - does this flight leave from the new airport or Don Muang? (website is not at all clear). Secondly they have a 7 hour wait through the night between arriving in BKK and the flight to Phuket~~~ will the airport bars be open?

Any knowledge will be much appreciated!
