  1. No mention of crosswalks! In most countries drivers are required to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks. Here they are largely ignored, even when there are push-buttons, timers and signal lights. At the one near me, I push the button, wait patiently for 40 seconds, and when the 'walk' light turns green -- I continue to wait as the traffic just goes on whizzing by, right through the red lights! Even if I manage to stop the cars and trucks by actually standing on the crosswalk in the middle of a traffic lane, the motorcycles threading the narrow gaps between those vehicles continue at full speed. And nothing stops the buses. I never try to cross the street ahead of an approaching bus. They don't even slow down; in fact I think they speed up and try to hit me before I can scuttle across to the the (relative) safety of the opposite sidewalk - where I am just as likely to get hit by a motorcycle taxi!

I would love to know if there is any law about any of this, and if there is, why there is not even any pretence of enforcement.

Try the one between soi 29 and 23, the lights turn red but drivers don't stop. Anyone on the marked crossing doesn't stand a chance. I give them the finger, which elicits angry stares.

  2. I had realised that Thailand has a bad road death record, but I had not expected it to be so high on a world scale.

Just goes to show we are all rolling the dice out there on the roads.

    Scary.

No, not really. Follow the rules you learnt back home. Look far ahead, drive defensively and keep your speed down. Drive a large truck and never get on a motorbike. Never be driven by a local. 120000k of safe driving in Thailand without incident.

  3. You have to be crazy to want to ride a bicycle on the roads in Thailand.

why, due to one isolated incident?

you enjoy the sofa and make sure you wear a helmet navigating the stairs.

Ill enjoy the 100k i ride a week thank you.

Likewise. Road cycling is a growing sport in Thailand. Most towns have cycling groups that go out in the evening. Udon Thani has a strong cycling club as does Nong Khai. I cycle about 200k a week and it is a great way to see the countryside with fitness and getting faster being the main aim. Most roads in this area have a two meter hard-shoulder which keeps one away from cars to some extent. These idiots most likely drove into that area.

  4. Don't be a lying idiot. How is the Feb 2 election going to solve the political conflict? So what if you win it? People will still hate you and your brother. The only way to solve this conflict is for your government to distance itself from your idiot brother and actually try to govern this country without any interference from him. You may not be able to govern wisely because most of you are idiots but at very least, try not to come up with hare brained schemes like the rice pledging or tablets for children! bah.gif

BUT, the Thai people voted for them with a big majority........Yes or No.............rolleyes.gif

Doesn't matter who governs, none of them have a clue. So where does the country go..........?

No ..........and even if they had - Thailand cannot be run for the SOLE PURPOSE of bringing back HER BROTHER!!! That is NOT Democracy - with Democracy comes the law and her last three years have BROKEN IT!!!

You are telling me the present gov didn't win by votes ?

They won by buying votes on a massive scale. Why do you guys keep forgetting that.

  5. So they have reduced their rates to 3,00 or 2,200 or 1,500 for a day room. That says a lot about the people attending the demonstrations - most of the ordinary Thai people they are so scared of, couldn't afford these rates or anything like them.

I have never paid more than 700 Baht for a hotel room in Thailand in 15 years. In most parts of the country 500 Baht gets a very nice room.

  6. Said:
    Pheu Thai spokesman Prompong Nopparit
a convicted criminal, convicted in two instances, now free on bail
    December 12, 2013
The Appeals Court on Thursday sentenced Pheu Thai party spokesman Prompong Nopparit and another Pheu Thai member to one-year imprisonment without suspension after finding them guilty of defaming the former president of the Constitution Court.
No criminals and/or corrupt people on electoral lists!
No criminals and/or corrupt people in government, parliament or as a civil servant!
Exclude from now on, all persons from the Parliament and from electoral lists which
    a have criminal records.
    b running free on bail.
c were already banned from parliament in the past.
d against are corruption or crime cases opened.

'which against are corruption or crime cases opened' Is this some kind of word game?

  7. Election fraud! Unlawfully trying to amend the constitution! Plus many other crimes against the thai people. What part of that is she basing her democracy. Im teaching social to high school kids about democracy and the 1ST thing it says in their books is the leader is chosen by the people for the people. Not BUY the people for the people i know only Sent from my GT-S5310 using Thaivisa Connect Thailand mobile app

    You're a teacher ????????

    Scary.

Yes, such poor use of English, it's hard to understand what he's going on about.

  8. Well played Yingluck. Continue this and the rank and file will get bored. ..as many Bangkokians are. Sent from my GT-I9300T using Thaivisa Connect Thailand mobile app

    You are kidding right?

They won't get bored, this is just the start and the initial gathering and they will be closing down lots of locations on a daily basis.

Man.... this aint even started yet.

I agree. It's incredible that some people can't clearly see what is happening. The PM has to step down. And reform has to take place. It is vital for the future of the country. More and more Thais are finally coming to understand this.

  9. Why hasn't this tragedy been reported in the local press? I can see no mention of it in the Bangkok Post. Can it really be possible that such loss of life on the roads doesn't make the headlines?

Meanwhile Thailand braces itself for the '7 dangerous days' on the roads. 7 days which are in fact only a little more dangerous than all the other days during the year. About 40 people die every day instead of the usual 30. It is the same during Sonkran, non-stop reporting of accidents on the radio for 10 days while for the rest of the year there is only silence.

My own rules for personal safety on the roads of Thailand are:

1 Never take a bus at night.

2.Never get in a mini van at any time.

    3.Never get on a motorbike.

    4.Only ever drive yourself.

    5.Drive defensively.

6 Drive a brightly coloured car.

    6.Use your horn.

Only the people of Thailand can change the catastrophic death toll on the roads. And most of them are just not interested.
