  1. Thabks everyone for your responses, seems there is a cultural habit to not ask question
    questions

Being raised in a foreign country has probably made me quite curious, and personally if I am.interested in someone, I want to know everything about them

Up until reading this thread, I used to get frustrated as to why I could name her entire family while she only knew that I have a single brother

If their culture doesn't encourage asking questions, then so be it
  2. Another thing I noticed was that pretty much all of these new cars, are all specced out

Eg rims, leather, sports pack, tinting, spoilers etc

I found that pretty odd especially since the cars are expensive for an average salary

In my home country cars are still pretty expensive but nothing compared to thailand, and about 80% of the cars are stock standard

Is it the mentality of since I've got a new car I may as well go all out OR what's the point of a new car that's bottom of the range, it needs to have all the bells and whistles"
  3. Everyone one does go there. I do so only rarely because of the crowding and predominance of tourist goods.

The Grand Hotel night market is less touristic and crowded, a place where locals shop and a good alternate when you tire of the midtown carnival

But every visitor should hit the midtown market at least once. My favorite part is seeing it magically appear and disappear day in and day out.

    Interesting

Do you know which markets I went to? The one on that main road that has markets on both sides, plus there was another smaller market through na entrance on that same road about 50m away

  4. One thing ive noticed is that, when I have a relationship with Thai women, no matter how much they like or dont like you.  They never ask questions about you.

Sure, some of you are going to say "maybe you are just a boring old sod" or "maybe she just wasnt into you" which could be true,

assuming non bar girls, or language barriers, I cant say I recall any girl ever asking me a question more personal then, how was your day???

They never ask about the details of my job, my family, my hobbies,

Sure im a chatty guy, and probably tell her who I am, and naturally I ask lots of questions relating to schooling, hobbies, friends, work, social group, favourite foods etc. etc.

And this relates to even girls who are clearly very attracted to me overall, and seems to be common regardless of whether its a first date or 100th date, younger, older, educated, non educated, hiso, midso.

    Whats you guys experience,

for the record, im 34, and the ladies ive had contact with are between 25-35

is it a cultural thing, or am I just that damn boring wink.png

  5. Must admit, my first trip to Hua Hin,

    Loved the night market,

    cheap stall food, good entertainment,

cheap massages 220baht for 1 hour foot, but there was that place inside the mall on the corner that had them for 99 for1 hour foot and 170 for 1 hour thai massage

    nice tea/cold drink shops

posh seafood for those that want it at not so touristy prices

Managed to pick up 10 hats for 500 baht

and a pair of imitation dr dre head phones for 99 baht, which were 1500 baht in bkk, and they are the best quality headphones ive ever had, (lets see how long they last though)

    gotta go back again!

  6. I dont like the taste of beer, but I drink it because its cold, fizzy, alcoholic, isnt too sweet, and takes long to drink (compared to spirits)

    I dont like red wine

I dont mind white wine, but cheap wine gives me a bad hangover

I love cocktails and spirits mixed with softdrink

My all time favourite is Jack daniels, but sometimes its inapproriate to drink (ie posh dinner), and I get too drunk too quickly, and mixing it with coke or dry gets too sweet,

  7.

can an average office worker work hard...

    ...
back in my country, a Corolla would cost about six months salary

    Income:

    Seven 11 about 9000 Baht/month.

Skilled factory labourer up to 20000.

Avarage office worker might earn up to 30000 (no managment position)

School director/high level government officer might make 60000.

(farang English teacher 25000 to 40000 and more tongue.png )

A corolla type car in basic edition costs about 600000 Baht.

600000/9000: 67 months, out of reach

/20000: 30 months, very hard even with going deep into debt.

    /30000: 20 months, still hard

    /60000: 10 months, doable

So even the 30000 Baht middle class income has to struggle hard.

Different perspective if there is a couple with good double income.

There were some statistics recently about private debt of Thai families.

Thais are very high in debt.

Some low earners pay 40% of their income just for car dept.

    Brilliant Answer, thank you!

  8. Just curious,

To be able to own say a brand new Toyota corolla or Honda City in bkk for example,

is it limited to the middle class and above, or can an average office worker work hard and get one without sacrificing 10 years salary?

for the record, back in my country, a Corolla would cost about six months salary after tax

so would someone with a new one of these be seen as highly successful?

I guess if a young girl had one of these they would also be asked questions

  9. This coming from a woman who was paid and is recieving 100,000s of thousands of baht in donations. Noone will help us my a---

Sent from my GT-S5310 using Thaivisa Connect Thailand mobile app

    Exactly!

it seems to thai people (and most asians) that credibility means nothing to them all for the sake of the almighty dollar (or baht in this case)

I wouldnt be surprised if so many people would be reading this thinking "ok, check, become a surrogate, check, get paid heaps, check, have a disabled baby, check, cry to the media about the poor baby, check, wait for more payments to come through, check, buy a house with the donations, check, pray to god the kid isnt adopted, check, cry for more donations, check!"

  10. I think he needs to move to Thai and live with his wife...whats the point in being married if you dont live with your wife???
I lived in thai for six years.returned to europe for the last 3 yrs...I came back from thai with 10,000 euros...I now owe almost 20000 euros to various banks!! Im returning to thai in a few weeks and I, ll have my debts paid off in a few yrs...in europe you work to pay the bills.in thailand you have more disposable income depending on your occupation of course....move to thai and live with your wife....also, the thai community in thr UK is, in general, not the kind of community you would want your wife becoming part of..its full of bargirls and gold diggers...I recently went to a thai restaurant in kent.3 Issan women in 30's were comparing and selling gold necklaces to each other at one table..they spent 50 quid between them on half wasted food too..their 3 husbands arrived in ti collect them then...all in mid 60's...this is typical of thai community in UK.the exception are some thai restaurant workers...move to Thai and meet people you can trustK

Exactly! If you are even sending money monthly then you are a complete moron. Or maybe you really believe you are such a hansum man
And if your wife is thinking that money grows on trees in the west, where every farang walking down the street looks like brad Pitt, maybe she expects Santa Claus as well, then you also have rocks in your head

  11. Some would say thay getting married is the definition of stupid,, regardless of thailand or not

As some might say, why would you actively seek to put a noose around your neck

  12.

In my country, the taxi operator takes up 50% of the meter, what's the arrangement in thailand?

When I catch a taxi from airport to hotel it's normally about 300 to 400 depending on traffic via a meter

Sometimes I try and negotiate to 250-350 with no meter, where most drivers just laugh and act as though you just offered 10 baht

My last trip i offered 350 Inc tolls no meter, to which he refused and did the meter, however the entire.trip.cost 285 so I was surprised he didn't take the 350, assuming the taxi operator gets a cut, it would have profited him a fair bit extra!

Same situation in my "home" city in China where they're happy to not turn on the meter so they don't have to share the wealth with the owner.

In BKK, the taxi is generally payed by the day, not on a percentage.  They won't negotiate less than the meter because the next guy in line will happily pay the meter.  They will negotiate over the meter if you let them.

Costs me about $8-9 to get home from Swampy- all in, including meter, tolls and the airport's cut.  That's for a 40-60 minute ride.  A good deal in any major city.

Asked the taxi last trip how much to Pattaya, and he laid out the sheet quoting 1500 Baht plus tolls.  But I've also seen sheets pulled out quoting 2,500 or more for the same trip.
Thay can't be right, if they were paid set fee per day, then they wouldn't be so eager to get your business while you walk down the street screaming taxeeeeeee taxeeeeeee

There has to be some profit sharing agreement

Poor wording on my part.  The drivers pay a set fee per day for their use of the taxi.  My bad.

I snuck back and revised my post...

    Haha all good

So they pay a set fee and then take a percentage of the meter?
This also must be the case because then they wouldn't best eager to push for no meter

  14. Taxis as cheap as chips over there I mean, in England you would pay 200 quid lol so not bad really

Sent from my iPhone using Thaivisa Connect Thailand

And in Mumbai the same trip might cost 600baht equivalent

    So what is your point?

English people shouldnt complain while Indians should
  15. I'm staying on soi13

Sure its.not perfect, but it's all part of thailand

But judging by the number of hotels going up there, maybe it would be good, to buy one of those shops opposite the Hyde for a bar in anticipation of the future

  17. I'm 35 and still fairly young, I have smartphones but I am starting to feel old and fall behind technology

I've never used instagram, I don't read or do twitter

I still dont know what a pod cast is

I don't use nor understand the latest apps that everyone is talking about

I grew up playing super Nintendo, Sega megadrvie and stopped about PlayStation 1, I tried ps2 ans 3 and found the games all too complicated and too hard.

A computer game that you play online scares me

I hope that in twenty years I'm not going to be like the old guys mocking the youngsters on why they need a smart phone, or data or email via mobile etc

Jeezus, premature senility. I think us older guys need to adopt you as a charity case. First thing we need to teach you is how to play bridge and dominos.

Teach me bridge! I used to play backgammon as a kid, dominoes too ;)

I also don't use instagram or facebook or twitter. Its a choice I use the phone more for work. I have played many computer games online and like it at times.

I also don't do facebook because I feel dumber everutime I read someone's comment on how long they are on the toilet, or how they are having a bad day because there is traffic,

Plus I don't want to become like them, so I stay away

That being said I think it's important to keep an open mind so that you can accept new technologies and at least try it

Years ago I bought an xbox wondering what the hype of halo was, I bought halo one and two

Played it for a few hours and motion sickness from the screen and the 400 buttons on the controller I couldn't hhandle,

Probably played it a total of three hours and haven't touched it since then

Felt pretty old, and I was only in my 20s!!
