  1. Yingluck is also in Chiang Mai but not sure if it is related or not. Apparently her caravan was stopped and checked at a check point also.

She now lives in a caravan? wink.png

Went in KSK before opening time yesterday through the back, no checks there. not sure if they are at the front.

There were security guards at the basement doors a few days ago.

there is and always was security guards at the basement.they are part and parcel of the complex, they deal with the traffic in the car parks and general security through out the building.

  2. The people in the know that speak thai go to the BEST PLACES (ie most beaitiful girls, friendly service, great food) and it is always the CHEAPEST PRICES - make friends with a farang that speaks thai and likes to explore

I speak reasonable Thai, yet all these best places, in the company of beautiful girls, friendly service, great food at cheap prices seem to have eluded me. Perhaps I have the wrong attitude or my aftershave is putting them off?

If the OP means for example; similar to in the UK what used to be the pubs of Fleet Street where the journalists used to hang out or the restaurants in Liverpool Street often the social hangouts of the city crowds and so on, the answer is no, nothing like that in Chiang Mai.

My daughter works for a well known Thai bank here in Chiang Mai, if the staff do decide to socialise somewhere after work, it`s usually places not far from where they work mostly in their own cliques. There is no regular haunts where bank workers meet and hang out and guess the same applies to office workers and those of other professions.

"I speak reasonable Thai, yet all these best places, in the company of beautiful girls, friendly service, great food at cheap prices seem to have eluded me."

Blar Blar Bar, but for some reason the pretty young waitresses, many of them Rajhaphat U. students, are more chatty with the young Thai men than the old western customers. Quite a puzzle there.

easy just buy the 300bht jug of cocktails,of the serving wenches, and they will sit with you all night,
  3. The more threads I read at the moment the more I despair at the moronic posts on here. This forum is really being dumbed down now and it's not by those digital Nomads that people like to complain about. There are so many people with chips on their shoulders it's sad. There are some balanced posters though, chips on both shoulders. The number of people who post sense and respond to the thread is getting less and less.

welcome to tv mate, you will get use to it eventually.

  4. My experience is, the bars that cater to tourists close early. Many Thai bars rage on until the wee hours.

Riding all around the city at 3 or 4 am.. I would say 'rage' isnt the term I would use..

Yes possible to get a quiet drink but the few places that are 'raging' are more the tourist side.. Niman area / canal rd / tawan deng etc Thai places some of the earlier ones to shut these days.

very much doubt if tourists to chiang mai even no were, or have heard about infinity, nimmanahaemin rd, tawan dang, discovery, even maya to some extent, warm up, monkey club, blar blar bar, every one of these places are open till around 2ish.

  5. I've always assumed that the closing times vary depending on the type of establishment. "Clubs" seem to be allowed to be open late vs. bars. I could be wrong. I must say Infinity and the places around there appear to have very good sound proofing. Even walking by directly outside you can tell that the sound is being muffled in the extreme.

could be right as monkey club and warm up are open late 2-3oclock

  6. I'm not sneering at them, and I have no doubt they were nice people. It just wasn't my kind of place. None of those places are.

I wasn't able to sleep tonight so I went out for a late night snack and a walk around Nimmen around 02:30 AM. I was shocked at the number of cars and motorbikes around Infinity nightclub. Tons of people.

It must happen every night but this was the first time in a few years I've been out so late.

Infinity and Tawan Daeng are two bars in the Nimmanhamin area that routinely stay open very late, demonstrating that the laws aren't applied equally in more parts of Chiang Mai than the old city. Neither of these two places appeal to me, and I don't know of any other Nimmanhamin places that get away with blatantly late operation.

I've heard rumors and speculation but nothing definitive; does anyone know how bars like Spice, Lucky, Infinity and Tawan Daeng can get away with staying open long after mandated closing time?

discovery is another one open late late,Maldives is a late opener and the one next door can not rember its name.notice they all cater only for thais though.but as you say good luck to em don't fancy any of them, apart maybe for Maldives quite a classy joint that one

  7. Me talking rubbish? I've never been so insulted in my whole life.

Whilst I agree that midnight curfew is for nanny states and I recognise the irony in being able to drink late in Muslim countries, my point is that people don't cancel their holiday to Thailand merely because of midnight closing. It may annoy some people but I can't see them vowing to never come back. As we all know, the late night destinations of Pattaya and the likes still open late and any crackdown is only ever a temporary thing. The same applies to the cricket sixes, other options or not. If it's struggling to get a quota of teams I'd be surprised if late-night drinking is the cause.

Really? People who have not been insulted on Thai visa havent lived.

At first I took the insults thrown at me here as personal, it was starting to affect my family relationships and love life. After one horrific bashing from WinnieTheKhwai, I walked next door and bit my neighbor`s cute 5 month old baby on her arm. I knew I was heading for TV breakdown. Then after a while I began to enjoy it, I became a Thai visa masochist.

My therapist has told me that if I continue to take the blue tablets I could be cured within a year, he also advised me to cut down on my doses of Konini, who`s agonisingly long posts are upsetting the chemical balances of my mind.

I would hazard a guess your balance of mind,is hedging to the paranoid, judging by some of your comments on here, keep taking them tablets never no one day.
  8. Tuskers? I don't miss it. I went once. What a sad place. Managed by foreigners for foreigners. I always avoid those places.

funny thai visa management, found it that sad that they put two of there free party nights on at tuskers, rember them well had a great party, and.and any one rember them spare ribs ,arroy.and of course the beer lao.

they still got the notice on the entrance to infinity, 200bht entrance fee all farangs.
  10. Posts 9, 12, 13 and 14 are exactly what I was looking for.

I also heard it's the intermittent visits by the Bangers boys causes all the mayhem, nothing new about that.

rember many many years ago in patong bangla one oclock in the morning there was real commotion going on the police from Bangkok had arrived and all the bar owners were in panic, dont think it had happened before closing bars that early.
  11. such a palaver over a simple transaction all you need to do is transfer sterling to your designated account in Thailand.get a bankers draft from thai bank equivalent to price of condo give it to your solicitor doing the transfer of the chanote, should take a few hours with good solicitor,at your leisure get paperwork of your branch detailing amount of money brought in to country,so you can take same amount or transfer out if you decide to sell at later date, and move cash abroad.thats what I did when I bought condo 10 years ago.

  12. There were about a dozen BiB in front of Tesco Nimman Thursday night at about 22:30, for no apparent reason. The always cheerful and pleasant people working at the bottle shop are now slamming the steel gates down at about 23:15, and no longer allowing people to linger past Midnight. So, yeah, it does seem like the heat was turned up a notch. They were only going until 03:30 last night by my condo; instead of 05:00, so the temperance movement may be taking root.

infinity as far as I can rember never ever closes till gone 3oclock.

  14. It looks like they're going after free-lancers and ignoring brothels. Kind of makes me wonder if they're really cracking down on all prostitution, or just prostitution that doesn't pay agreed upon bribes.

never no a free lancer, bar girl,go go dancer, karoke, pay anyone anything, definitely not the bizz, thought they were all independant

  15. I've put in new batteries, it works with someone else's card, but not mine. I reckon the cards chip is probably knackered (though it works in cash points). Circular conversation with Barclays for 2 hours has me half convinced they update the machines (?) - he kept on banging on about how it was an older machine.

If it def doesn't work in another machine I'm gonna order another card. Unfortunately it's the only pinsentry we have, going to get another one sent.

will Barclays send out pin sentrys or connect cards to Thailand,
