  1. Dave2, it's not quite that easy now. The other day the asst. manager from Bangkok Bank KSK called me, asking if I knew Mr. XXX -- he said the guy was a newcomer in town and wanted to open a bank account with a large sum of money but only had a 30 day visa exempt entry, was staying in a guest house and didn't have any references. The bank official really wanted open an account for him because of the large sum of money, but with their new rules he needed a reference for the guy so he was calling around hoping to find someone responsible who might have had some contact with the guy who could come in and vouch for him. The need something in writing for their files now.

A temporary tourist arrives in town on holiday and a Bangkok Bank assistant manager personally contacted you to ask if you knew him. Why would he do that? Would it had not been simpler for the assistant manager to ask the customer if he knew you or anyone else in Chiang Mai that could provide a reference? If the customer said yes, then the bank could check the names or if no, end of story, that`s how it normally works.

    Doesn`t add up.

Because she's the Thai Visa 2016 Poster of the Year, that's why.
don't want to sound pedantic, but whats tv got to do with the branch manager.if I rember correctly the last lady manager of Bangkok branch ksk got moved to Bangkok bank in mai sai just by the bridge, for questionable reasons.
  2. in a past life I was working for a major bank, and if I rang up a customer for a reference,i think I would be looking for references for a new job.its up to the customer to provide prove if asked.money laurdering is a serious offence.

  3. "This new place charged me 300 baht to do my 90-day reporting."

lol, there is a sucker born every day! i did my reporting on last Thursday. went downstairs and handed the envelope to our post-lady. cost me 32 Baht and i never left my house.laugh.png

and you got a discount,Should have been 37 baht,

  4. my mate in Bangkok just went through the same procedure,He had lost his off shore job after about 20 years in the oil game been living in Bangkok all that time,After a few talks with him. of to imm in bkk he goes obtained a 3month o visa with rider not to leave country in the mean time, given a date for next appointment, turned up with his bank letter obtained a ext of stay,he was questioned why he wanted a o, He said retirement.

  5. "They" is a gender neutral pronoun now - at least according to such esteemed organs as The Washington Post or New York Times. There's nothing wrong with its use in this context and it does not automatically mean that the OP's partner is same sex or transgender. Even if it did, why would it be necessary to attack them for the use of a pronoun in a question about banking?

To answer the actual question meaningfully - it is next to impossible to guarantee a bank loan as a foreigner. In part because of the kind of arrangement that the OP suggests; you'd have a million foreigners countersigning loans for their tilac in Thailand and then running off home and withdrawing their funds on the way out the door. I tend to agree with some of the other posters that you might be better off giving this as a gift if they really are your partner. It's not exactly a huge sum of money is it?

You are correct about the word they. That being said I find it to be a method of being impersonal and would not necessarily look on them as a close unity.

Your reasons for them not accepting the OP as a backer are indicative that they are not a close relationship. I do agree if they are that close give her the money it will tend to bring them closer together. I speak from personal experience.

a fool and his money are soon parted, your not lending your giving.

  6. anyone heard anything about who will be showing on television, the epl games as cth as far as I know have no contract to show the games next season.

  7. As an all rounder I give my vote to Rudi at Gecko. The booze is amazingly cheap and the food is good honest pub grub. The Thai food is even better than that. It is comfortable, the staff are lovey and most have been there for a long time and Rudi never talks politics.

got its good points, but please do something with them toilets.there not very nice.

  8. Basil at the Red Lion gets my vote. He's always friendly but knows when to give people their space and his beer prices, for stuff like Guinness, cider and real ales, are the cheapest in town. Like me, he doesn't like riffraff.

Walked past the Red Lion last night and it was absolutely packed (and this is low season). So he must be doing something right.

That`s because he`s right at the hard core of the Chiang Mai tourist district and has the only 100% Farlang English restaurant in the area. All the rest are either very expensive continental or the Dukes that is expensive and American. Could say that once the Dukes goes the Red Lion will have a monopoly on Farlang restaurants unless something similar springs up and I can`t see that happening. We have the Pub but that`s a little off the beaten track and mostly caters to regulars I think where as the Red Lion gets a steady flow of tourists, so it`s a gold mine, should be raking the money in.

the irish bar in the market caters mainly for farangs, Bit nicer place to eat out as well.
  9. the owner/farang at patio has had more than his share of complaints. You can go there on Saturday night; I can go to Club Cafe, every other night for about the same money. The more popular bars compete with 711 on pricing; nothing new here....it feeds on itself..the more they sell, the better pricing they get. Dayli must have had 100+ Friday night...all doing promos and drinking up...meanwhile...lots of nursing (without a nurse) and brooding at the farang places.

club café closed isn't it, Or are they doing some alterations.???
  10. my friends from aussie got married there,if you call sitting with a bloke with a computer, putting all your details in and printing out two marriage certificates,a ceremony,There were more thai couples coming in with there copies of marriage certificates and getting a divorce pretty quick, than anyone getting hitched.belive its a formality as long as you both agree with financial arrangements.hand in old certificates issued with divorce ones.
