  1. its a  3-4 year old yaris , emssions are a concern but i was assuming it won't be a problem because they have emssion standards in thailand as well, in CA now cars simply pass/fail emissions by attaching the exhaust pipe to a computer, hense older cars are now thrown off the road, considering its not old and has minimal miles on it and has a catalatic converter i dont think that would be an issue.. although the fact that it doesn't have a heater might be an issue lol, so much for driving to north dakota

This is very close to the most wild scheme from this venue.  Everything about it except your fun screams silly, do not do it!

CA buyer of a cheap car, not a collectable..........

    -steering wheel wrong side

    -not meet emissions rules.

-buy from dicey individual, not dealer.

    -registration?

    -special license?

Ah this is only for your fun.

  2.

Sounds like you're another customer for the Thai Elite card.  But I wouldn't count on any work permits.

What does "Thai Elite Card" mean? Could you help explain please.

There will probably be a horde of people along any minute to give you much more info.  But here is their website: http://www.thailandelite.com/glimpse.php

If you're under 50 years old, not married, without a job and work permit, then Elite card will be about your only way to remain in Thailand long term.  Cost Tbhat 500,000 at the lowest rate.

If you have movie investment money, contact this writer, the donkey pic, and myself.  We can get movie making going for you.  Beware of scams.  Otherwise, the Elite Card is for you as much as old Brits on this venue hate it for some reasons.

  3. USA State Dept language school for Thai is 8 hrs a day for 5 day week for 9 months.

This includes some treatment of Thai culture and living situations and Thai history.

Most real language instruction includes the culture because of the strong tie between culture and language.

Thai is very difficult to learn and repetition over closely spaced lessons is the educationally sound way to go.

That means the student should be learning spoken Thai by oral practice daily three to five hours a day.  Writing and reading is more of private, individual study, must accompany oral practice, and to expect success in six months to a year, no less.

Any other time demands less that that is just token.  A real language educator would say ridiculous for less.

  4. This is an important question, frequently pondered. HH the Dalai Lama has said it is possible to be both Buddhist and Christian but I think he was just being generous.

    Differences.......

Buddhism has no god head, no god.

    Buddhists do not proselytize.

Buddha was completely a man and has no god properties like the Biblical Jesus. And, said that, too.

    B. do not pray TO a god, not a sub god, and not to metal statues.

    B. pray for loving kindness and compassion for self and the world.

    B. is not monolithic and has many slightly different sects.

    B. has no overall checker for purity of belief, not like Catholic Pope or that dogma.

    B. has no heaven and its hell is very different.

    B. has no Bible.

    B. came to the real nature of the physical universe way ahead of current quantum physics which now is coming to agree with Buddhism.

    B. has no way of wiping out sin via priests, and has no sin, only responsible guilt. And, the good and bad you do is not judged by anyone but yourself and the precepts, and it sticks to you over many lifetimes with no easy way to get rid of the bad record you have.

I must be forgetting many more differences, but I know I can successfully argue that the two belief systems are fundamentally incompatible and can not be joined without significant twisting of one or the other or both.

    I am Tibetan Buddhist.

  5. My Christian/Catholic upbringing doesn't allow me to pray to Buddha.

Can I follow Christianity and use the workings of Buddha for my time on earth? A lot of people tell me that Jesus and Buddha were alike. I like what the Buddhist religion has to offer. Could I follow the teachings of Buddha but maintain my Christian upbringing?

    Thanks.

My understanding is that those who pray to Buddha don't understand his teaching.

One should not worship him but respect him for his Dharma.

The power of the Buddha lies in the regular practice of his teaching.

Real Buddhists do not pray TO a metal or stone object, figure of Buddha. Buddha said do not pray to objects and not to him. Pray for world compassion and for your own bigger compassion...YES!

  6. Sadly, life in middle class America has gone down hill in most joy of living areas.

-real wages are well behind real cost of living.

    -cost of everything has skyrocketed.

-property values were cut to ribbons many places and still low.

-no Buddhists around but plenty of condemning Christians.

    -sick commercial-saturated TV.

-children prefer video game to persons.

    -regular food is sugar saturated.

Oh, I could go on and on.  I sold my Fla house 15mos prior to the property crash there and the new owners had 60% market value compared to what they paid me by then.  Property taxes did not go down.

Poor class of Thai people, who I live with, have life values so much more humane and life and joy centered, I could never go back for that reason alone.

  7. Wow, great answer, thanks a lot. Do you think I need an attorney for doing the marriage + visa or it can be done by myself?

When you are married you can get a 12 month extension with 400,000 Baht in a thai bank.

OR 40,000 Baht a month income.

    A Rough Guide.

    (1) The alien has obtained a temporary visa (NON-IM)

    (6) In case of marriage with a Thai lady, the husband who is an alien must have an average annual income of not less than 40,000 baht per month or a money deposit in a local Thai bank of not less than 400,000 baht for the past 2 months for expenses within a year.

Letter from your Thai Bank showing balance and up to date bank book.

    OR.

If income from outside Thailand: Letter from your Embassy showing income. Now may also need proof of income as back up.

If Income from Thailand: Statements showing Income Tax receipts.

    Marriage Certificate. (Kor Ror 3)

Marriage Registry entry. (Kor Ror 2)

Wife's Tabbien Baan and ID Card.

    Your Passport.

    Copies of everything.

Photos of you and your Wife in and around the house.

A map showing the way to your house.

Passport size photos and 1,900 Baht fee.

Take your Wife to be interviewed.

One or two witnesses may be required.

You will be given a 30 day under consideration stamp.

Go back in a month and get the remainder.

A better answer would come IF you stated your passport nationality. Americans need a notarized statement of monthly income from the American Embassy in BKK, current cost $50.at Embassy. Hold up your right hand.

  8. Many smarter types, like Nurses I hear from, are scared silly that they will be replaced by cheaper labor from neighboring nations.

In many job categories, Thailand pays more than neighbors.  I look for lots of labor disruptions and business adjustments and more for Thailand than the three surrounding countries.  I have not found one article in English that addresses in a scholarly way these anticipated effects.  Whooo boy, some are in for a surprise.

  9. Thai-owned businesses' model is based on low pay, low overhead, and never, never lowering retail prices.

    This is the Thai-Chinese credo.

Low pay for English teachers indicates there are too many in the potential labor pool and/or the labor is desperate for ANY job in Thailand and "teaching English" is a quick and dirty solution.

I suspect that the single product... English instruction.... businesses will not be able to stand much labor price pressure and will not raise their retail prices. Given chance there will be fewer desperate "any job" people, this may shake out the marginal education operators.

Clearly, if an employer can not/will not work to get you a Work Permit, you laborers will just have to make other arrangements, such as living somewhere else, getting a family/ED/retirement/Elite Card/or something else legal. I cant see the current situation changing for three years, hopefully longer, so best to prepare.

  10. Because he was so wrong in trying the daring rice scheme, I think Thaksin is daring again and believing that Yingluck will never be found guilty of anything, but he must once again be wrong or Thailand may as well hand him the keys to the Kingdom.

This YL arrival is another showdown, hopefully the last.  Thaksin loves, I guess, high stakes games (as long as he personally does not have to suffer) and is sticking it to the Army, winner take all.

If Thaksin wins, he owns the nation.

    Arrest warrant for Ms Kritsuda

    8-9-2014-9-00-12-PM-wpcf_728x413.jpg

BANGKOK: -- The Criminal Court has issued a warrant for the arrest of a former red-shirt activist wanted on charge of having in possession of war weapons.

Pol Gen Somyos Poompanmuang, the deputy national police chief, said today (Saturday) that a suspect who was recently arrested by the police on similar charge, Mr Phirapong Sinthusonthachart, told police that he obtained some of the war weapons from Ms Kritsuda Kunasen, 27, a former red-shirt activist.

Ms Kritsuda, alias Sahai (Comrade) Sudsoi, claimed that she was tortured by army personnel while she was held in custody. Her claim prompted New York-based Human Rights Watch and the United Nations Human Rights to demand the National Council for Peace and Order to investigate the case.

Ms Kritsuda has left the country and is currently living abroad.

During his weekly address on Friday, NCPO chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha categorically denied Ms Kritsuda’s charge that she was tortured by army personnel during her detention.

“Why beat her up, she has a pretty face?” asked the general, adding that there was no point of torturing or beating her up as all the people held in the military custody have never been tortured.

He said that Ms Kritsuda was cooperative with the authorities during her detention. He added that the red-shirt activists asked to say on in army’s custody claiming that she felt unsafe getting out.

A favorite move by USA police is to take a suspect in for questioning and then let them go free soon.  That way, the suspect's buddies must assume the suspect spilled info... on them... and the buddies "take care of" the suspect in their own way.  Italian Mafia was hurt with that method often.

Police have no need to touch the suspect;  just hold for a while and let go free.

  12.

I can't work out what the big deal is. You missed your report date by about 30 days. You go in, they fine you 2000B, no problem, unless you make a habit of doing it, this is all that ever happens. This is what I did - completely painless.

The extension of the period you are permitted to stay on your visa, and all the conditions of your  stay are completely unaffected by whether you have done your 90-day reports or not.

What were you afraid might happen?

    I wasn't sure since I'd never miss-stepped - but it didn't cost 1B......zip - nada.....

Doing the 90day renewal of your address notification is another job for your Thai wife.  Your system seems overly complex.  After the first one, this is a five min job.... and for wife.   You have to go in for the ONE YEAR RENEWAL permit, but that is no problem also.  Don't make simple things difficult.

  13. Choices handling law breakers.......

    -Cant be found.coffee1.gif

-Left the nation easily, got on video.rolleyes.gif

-arrested but lack of evidence, let golock.gif .

    -let out on bail.laugh.png

    -found guilty but given:

    ---suspended sentence.whistling.gif

    ---reduced sentence.sorry.gif

    ---forgotten sentence.w00t.gif

This is the Army's huge job of cleaning this system.  Looks weak so far, but maybe GONE is best after all huh.png .

Thaksin should start a hotel in Dubai just for the rich escapees.... all speaking Thai there and happywelcomeani.gif .

  14. No degree, no work permit, and what visa do you intend to stay on whilst you're here?

Visa/border runs are a thing of the past in Thailand - it might have been mentioned once or twice in the news over the past month or so!

30k is about as good as it will get without a degree.

I don't mean to be rude but non-degree holders without WP, visa etc are exactly the people the authorities are looking to get rid of here.

    Check these links:

Check this one in particular: http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/743467-visa-crackdown-is-this-the-end-of-the-road-for-unqualified-esl-teachers-in-thailand/

That is about all you can anticipate per month salary. However, if you have no WP, the question of salary is moot.

  15. Is it trolls day? They seems to be out and in good shape.

    What is Thailand Elite Program?

and btw the reason I am upset that I have to leave, is because I have a girlfriend I love, and she has a boy, we stay together 3 years but I will have to leave her behind. She makes 8500 baht / month working in a hotel in an Island, and it is a quite sad situation.

You should give me lots of your abundant money to manage for you because anyone really living here and has never heard of the Thailand Elite Card needs help.

Just flash you cash and buy this Card and live here happily......... as happily as a guy like you can.

Abandon your gf and her kid, you hate Thailand, you want to hurt it by taking your valuable self and your rich buddies out.........and you are really angry at Thailand... which you hate so much... which will not allow you to live here ???  Do you see the funny contradiction in that???

Just buy the Card and .........  I almost said, "Stay here."  But I take that back.

  16. <script type='text/javascript'>window.mod_pagespeed_start = Number(new Date());</script>

Good. This guy deserves a life sentence.

I know of nowhere in the US that it is legal to shoot someone from inside your home to the outside, unless that person is pointing a gun at you. The BBC manages to find some people who "call into question" having guns for self defense. This isn't self defense. It's murder even in the US.

You should learn more about Florida's "Stand Your Ground" laws and the case of George Zimmerman then. You can shoot someone legally anywhere outside.

This is a classic case of over reaction.  The man has no grounds... he was not threatened, no weapon was flashed, and he was in a protected place inside, woman outside.

If he had opened the door, removing his protective place category, via Fla Stand Your Ground, he would be innocent.  The shooter can always claim the dead person threatened him via this law, and the dead do not testify.   These laws are basically The Old West returned to America.

  17. ^I'm sure both western women and Thai women interact with their children in a myriad of different ways as individuals and neither set of women follow some set of instructions based on their race or nationality.

    True enough.

i was looking for personal experiences of Thai mothers teaching, interacting and talking properly to their children from an early age.

I have been very close, too close, to watching 5 kids raised from infants to about 15, all Thai people.

The secret is FAMILY.  When there are two or more women around and teen girls, the children will be parented so well the problems just melt away.  Some one of the family will change the kid, another may have a turn feeding, and so on in a non-planned way of sharing duties.

The children grow up well adjusted, not demanding stuff, generally off of caffeine drinks, and respect older people.  Not true for single woman alone, granny does parenting, and not true for "modern" Thai middle class who do not live with extended family.  Not true for HiSo with nannies.  I don't know about these categories.

Thai poor who are in extended families are excellent rearing children.  Unfortunately, as soon as the MALE kid gets old enuf to ride motorbike, teen-ites (severe rebellion) sets in and males become loose cannon.  FEMALES stick with the good program and remain loyal and helpful to the family, often living near or with, even after marriage.

The culture of America, which I also know only, is very different where both parents work, move away from extended families, and dump their spawn onto a day care facility where the kids learn to be video game delinquents even before teenage.  That is why THEY have A.D.D. and many psycho doctors, and Thai has little of that.
