  1. And now Tops supermarket at 2nd Road / Pattaya Klang is closing down. One of the girls said they have been there 15 years but now the 2 million Baht/ month rent is too much. You look at the Pattaya ( bad ) News Clippings

and its not surprising that for alot of folks the enough is enough - the Thais can have this place - point has been reached.

Seems to be the case,Ive just hung on unnecessarily, now even I have had enough. Got three mutts and putting one up for adoption in US/UK flights etc paid for, sad, but three is two too many anyway, but manageable.

Making my first move to re-establish myself next two weeks,Portugal or Spain, but those Spanish houses for sale/rent are really cheap and looking at pix of them look fantastic, anyway a once or twice over is required, but just want to get the hell out of it PDQ

  2. Personally I've always been more attracted to Portugal than to Spain though like many people I do tend to consider the two as being one as far as retirement destination discussions go.

It's not for nothing that the Algarve has been hugely popular with sedately retired Brits for decades.

The weather in Spain will be better, the Atlantic coast does generate lot of rain, and Portugal is in for a major tax grab,Spain have had theirs.

going to Portugal in next two weeks to look around ,then couple of areas in Spain early new year, need to get out of this bloody place as quick as I can

  3. There is no way they could prove one way or another where you were when the DD was set up. I have one running, obviously have to change card details every few years,do it with vpn or give friend details to do it at UK end. Fri and Tues ones I use VPN

Once won £40,000 on 37 &half pence bet

  4. There are lots of foreigners not coming here anymore. My friends, most of whom live in Bangkok, say one night is enough in Pattaya. Most won't come at all. I get the idea that foreigners who live upcountry are the ones who come to Pattaya to get away from the wife and family. But overall, most foreigners I come in contact with outside Pattaya don't like to come here at all: "Because it's not like it used to be." On a recent couple of trips to Cambodia, every day I met someone who used to live in Thailand or Pattaya. That's all my Phnom Penh hotel-owning friends tell me. Lots of Thailand "refugees."

I have a friend who has pulled out of being in Pattaya full time and prefers to spend his time in Phnom Penh now. The differences are noticeable, beer 20 to 40 baht a glass of fresh Angkor draught and better farang food there at better prices. He loves it and the locals are really very accommodating. They have a can do attitude where as in a lot of cases in Thailand it is a fark you attitude and they couldn't care less if you leave their business. He said to me his money goes a lot further there and said the people are so much more friendly and accommodating. On my visit there I found that all to be true, I loved it, I'm only here because my partner is here and she is Thai.

Both all true above. But what about the net effect :Is there a way to gauge the number of incoming new foreigners that do not remember or care about the way it used to be

    compared to the numbers outgoing.

"Net" effect? zero. Chinese are the new mass incomers, spending next to nothing TAT figures include them too

  5. Ouch! Back below 56

Late Friday afternoons always £ drop, pick up again late Monday morning

Any reason for this common occurrence?

As long as I can remember it has always been a feature,£down it goes late Friday. Banker did explain years ago,but cannot relate the precise terms he used. If you look back at the trends always the same, unless drastic events happen

  6. True, most people traveling around in cars will be Thais and certainly Pattaya has become the new weekend retreat to the younger Thais from Bangkok which is a welcome sign. (They do not patronize the same places as the visiting farangs except Central shopping center. The bars along 3rd road and around Hollywood is their avenue of night time entertainment and the upscale hotels is where they would be staying if they have not purchased one of the new condos in town.). The single Westerner visiting Pattaya is on the downslide; however, there are more independent young travelers coming from South Korea and other parts of South East Asia. Gradually there are more and more free spirited Chinese (middle class) that also travel solo to Pattaya but as we know, most of the Chinese are visiting Pattaya in packaged tours buzzing around the area in their white cocoons (busses). Sad to say to the old timers here from the post Vietnam era, that Pattaya is changing.

It gets the feeling as being far more foreign than times before, but guess that's the way the cookie crumbles. Whatever you state is correct, and for the westerner there must come a time sooner than later when enough of enough takes centre stage(unless you are camped in front of a computer 24/7)infiltration of Chinese into is not a good thing for westerners, makes for an uncomfortable experience,as last night Chinese group walked in ,group of westerners walked out of popular restaurant Jolly Friar

  7. Cannot help but think the proposed new location is going to be a flop, too far away from where his previous restaurant was, parking will be an issue there as well,no regular tuk-tuks going down soi27,too far to walk too on a hot night from Naklua Rd Closer to Pothisarn Rd,with all the restaurants on that corner too for competition

As for the German clientele, yes they set good standards but hear more and more leaving for Cambodia

  8. Passing by this establishment in the late afternoon not seeing the retired Germans drinking their beer looking onto Naklua Rd will be a missing landmark for Naklua.

nor getting stared at by the passing hoards of Chinese.

Was suggested his new place is by the new 7/11 on the bend further down the road 27

  9. Dog eat dog. The pressures to spend more, drink more quickly to buy more drinks is getting quite noticeable, especially the more popular drinking holes I attend . gets tiresome when want to relax, the bar girls know exactly how much is left when that bottle is enclosed in cooler condom, and on to you like a pack of wolves same - same.

If numbers of farang keep disappearing at this rate of knots it will not be 10 years before its a ghost town ,more like 5. do not know how many of the once popular restaurants manage to stay open now, just one closure after another, empty up for sale is getting more and more popular signage wise

So you are complaining about customer service?

Servitude more like. Tonight in bar 3 drinks,San Miguel, bar bill check bin ,charged for four, now this particular bar Ive used for years, lot of haggle reduced to 3 drinks ,no tip and walked off. Now if these tricks are now the norm,be careful, very careful

Sometimes you just have to say whooa there fella. Bars have a little cup the bill is put in the cup after each drink. It does not take much intelligence to check the cup. Or you could do like a lot of old expats do and pay after every beer. Now that's not a new idea as I was doing it when I lived in Pattaya 10 years ago. I've never been cheated at a bar. I pay after each beer.

I really don't think you have what it takes to live in Thailand. Best look to other places.

After 7 years? had well enough ,they can stuff whatever they like in the bin,yes am off to Portugal

I'm only surprised that you would expect to be relaxing in a Pattaya bar beer.

It's their JOB to get you to buy drinks, and put the pressure on ( especially in low season ). If you want to relax, buy a beer from 7 11 and sit on the walkway, if you can find a seat nowadays, or drink in an hotel.

BTW every barbeer and gogo in Pattaya could close tomorrow and Pattaya would still live on. It's not 20 years ago when Pattaya was a one horse town ( sadly ).

Only time I will be truly relaxed is when I'm out of this dump

  12. No idea what serps is, I do have a small local authority pension that I get now so i imagine that is taken into the calculation, sad.png

If you worked for a local authority or the forces you probably won't have any SERPS entitlement.

So your max state pension would be 134GBP under the new system.

post 2016 perhaps, pre would not apply local authority ,public sectored pensions (govt. pensions) would more than likely be a 30 year employment term then retirement at approx 50 years old then 15 years of serps (or additional) added to whatever the OAP stands at at that precise moment

  14. Looking at tax rates in Spain they are coming down for anybody on less than 67000euros a year and reducing further next year, tax adviser states it is possible to pay less tax there than the UK ,guess they get marriage allowance too

    WWW. Expatica .com...ask the experts

  15. If I had a dog ,a dog that I truly felt for I would contact Soi Dog Trust BKK They know the procedures of getting it shipped out and re-homed with a loving family in US Canada ,UK ,anywhere really. Have to pay for transportation think around $400,but pet will be far happier position than abandoned to its fate in Thailand

Have 3 mutts ,but am thinking of doing this to my younger mutt as will be leaving Thailand in a year or so.,other two come with me

The OP has six (6) puppies, that would come to $2400.

Did I say anything about shipping out en-mass,was quoting one dog. Sometimes I think posting on here is a complete waste of time

Then what is the point of shipping one out? He would still have five more to find homes for. Might as well look locally for homes for all six. Besides, there are probably thousands of dogs in the US/Canada on death row that could be rescued before shipping a dog all the way from Thailand. BTW, it is a waste of time posting if it makes no sense.

I am not going into a debating head to head with you, especially you. You have no knowledge or very limited knowledge of anything, not of this but anything, and if you researched the issue there are people abroad very much aware of the situation of dogs especially Soi dogs in Thailand are and have the utmost sympathy for them

As you state no sense Now I would appreciate if you never quote me or follow me in future. you will undoubtedly have the last word, have it on me,but anything you state after this I will treat as stalking and inform the moderation team Now that is that
