  1. Someones having a laugh! Davids Kitchen food is good....for Chiang Mai, but there are probably at least a dozen better restaurants in Bangkok, and probably 50 better restaurants in somewhere like London!

I ve seen Trip Advisor telling people that "the best restaurant" in somewhere like Phuket, for example, is a 30 baht roadside noodle bar! Its all based on Trip Advisors users votes, and in no way makes an objective comparison between different restaurants.

  2. NO! Have you been reading these threads? Thailand needs proof that you are BRINGING INTO THAILAND an average of 65,000 per month, or that you have 800,000 in a Thai bank account. Theyre not interested in what you have back home, they want to see that youre bringing money into the country to cover your lifestyle. OK?

  3. Selfish? Hell yes! I like it as it is now....half empty car park all day long, nice cinema with hardly any viewers apart from me,  Fuji at lunchtime last Thursday, there were four people including two of us, compared to trying to park at Airport Plaza, compared to trying to even access the very stupidly placed Maya ( traffic wise), Promenadas a breeze......but please if you read this, dont tell anybody cos its great empty!

  4. Funny. You do realise that these boxes are illegal, or at least the streams you watch on them arent legal. Your questions a bit like asking people on here if they have any guidance on how to rob a bank!

  5. UPDATE ! CHIANG MAI FC PROMOTED! After a memorable and very tense game, Chiang Mai FC secured a draw 2-2 away at Khon Kaen, guaranteeing the final promotion place on the final day of the season against the only team that could have overtaken them! Chiang Mai supporters packed one end of the ground, something over 500 people made the very long trip to Khon Kaen, and the Chiang Mai supporters outshouted and outsung the KK supporters throughout the game. Passion, intensity and tension were all on display and the Chiang Mai team were remarkably humble. Most of them even stopped by at the bar where we were celebrating to thank us for our support! You wouldnt get that from most sports teams! Roll on next season, when the very best teams in Thailand will be visiting Chiang Mai!

Thank you for your replies. I will check out the Tops market at Central Festival. Those beers with the silly names are the ones I'm after. It's the silly prices I'm trying to avoid. The many microbreweries on the west coast of the U.S. are the ones driving the popularity of IPA. Many of the older established beer producers in the U.S. are suffering revenue loss because these new breweries produce a much tastier beer than Bud, Coors, etc.

Based on their FB pages, Give me hops looks like a shop worth visiting as does I hate Mondays. The prices are high but unfortunately, that's to be expected as these are all imported a long distance.

I'm still curious to learn anything I can about distributors. Someone mentioned the "Number One Bar" off Loi Kroh Road as being run by a fellow who imports beer from Bangkok. I plan to visit there at some point.

Sorry, Alaska, Wasnt being negative.....its exactly the same if you go in most local pubs in the UK....there will always be the standard well known beer you know, but then there ll be about a dozen others at a higher price with names like "Wizards Scrotum", or "Angels Wings".....etc etc......no idea what they taste like until you ve shelled out £4 or so for a pint!

  7. The best value IPA type beers by far are available at Tops Supermarket, Central Festival. There are several different British type IPAs/ Bitters,  McEwans, Fullers, Youngs, Bombardier, most available at 169 baht for a 500 mil bottle ( almost a pint).

Most of these imported IPAs, mostly from USA it seems, have got silly names and silly prices, and are mostly unproven as they come from so called "Microbreweries" you ve never heard of!

I don't like to be pedantic but a win against PTT wouldn't have given CMFC promotion !

Agreed! My mistake! "Its Complicated" if 2 teams finish on level points its the "head to head" record of the two matches against each other, not goal difference. I often wondered if my school maths would ever be any use for anything....now I know !!

  9. Beware of the many fake language schools whos sole aim is to provide a cover for people wanting to live here illegally ie with a 12 month visa, which then gets renewed again...and again.....Heard about a young chap recently, thought he was being really smart signing up to one of those schools at a cost I believe of around 25,000 baht. Within a few weeks of signing up and paying he had to leave back to his country.  The authorities know which of the language schools are fake and do fairly regular checks these days.

I observed quite an interesting exchange at immigration last year as follows:

Officer: So you ve been at a school learning Thai for 3 months?

    Applicant: Thats correct.

Officer: Say something to me in Thai?

    Applicant: Err, Err, Err......

    Officer: Next please!

  10. The new side of the road, going towards the City, only opened on Wednesday 5th September.  We sat in amazement at a coffee shop on the first morning as despite massive signs everywhere, traffic continued to try to go the wrong way both sides up and down both carriageways. Police were there in big numbers to be fair, and despite them blocking access roads to stop people going the wrong way, they still in some cases did all they could to dodge past the police to go the wrong way!

I know from a very reliable person, that Sheryle's Bar and Rest in Rathwithi Road, will show the fight, eventhough it is "late"in the evening.

Well, good luck with that idea! Sheryles is just opposite the Zoe Complex, and the boys in brown are there every night at midnight to make sure everything closes down, right on cue, the shutters close at midnight. Not sure what happens if you re inside the shutters though!

Reliability, as the reason for this thread indicates. Of course, when it rains that reliability goes down the toilet.

People are obsessed with this rain thing. I ve still got Truevision, sometimes against my better judgement, but I like the guarantee of watching most of the major world sports events unbroken and unbuffering. The pictures from True go off only when the rain is particularly heavy, probably about three or four times in a year, and then usually for no more than a couple of minutes.

To read these threads, anyone might think that True pictures go every time it rains a bit. They dont. Honestly. Believe me....I m not making excuses for True, merely pointing out the facts!

contractors don't get paid until the work is signed off. It can take months or even years in Thailand.

"50% of the money required to complete the task goes into someones pocket"

You are supposed to prefix statements like this with 'in my wild imagination-'

I agree there is often corrupt payments involving government contracts but often the problem with roads here is just good 'ol fashioned incompetence.

"In my wild imagination" you appear to be burying your head in the sand....or the pothole!

  14. Sadly, as we all know, a contract and funding is issued, and then 50% of the money required to complete the task goes into someones pocket, with the rest of the job done on the cheap.

Most of the new road is fine, but the last five kilometres coming towards the City approaching the Samoeng junction is already, after less than a month , in a shocking and dangerous state, full of huge potholes that you have to navigate very carefully.

  15. I feel personally that Nana Bakery has gone downhill. Their bread used to be crusty and full of flavour, now I find it soft and mostly tasteless.

For "proper" French style bread, "L Opera",  opposite Anantara Hotel, French owner, bakes himself personally every day, and also sells lots of nice French style patisseries/ cakes etc.

Go in the morning as most of his bread sells out by lunchtime.
