BMO Harris is the private banking arm of BMO. When Harris was purchased out of Chicago it was to expand the US operations. I am told that BMO Harris is subject to additional US banking compliance regulations. I noticed that BMO  changed its Thai correspondent bank from  SCB to Bangkok Bank  two years ago. No idea why.

If you ever get jammed up again you can consider the dismal Scotia Bank. It owns a large part of Thailand's Thanachart Bank.

But I need a us account and BNS doesn't offer it.

Typucally bar girls get all of the blame. In recent years being  in SE Asia i would say the following.

Filipinas are much less likely to use condom than Thais.

Both Filipina and Thai bar girls are much more likely to use a condom than a girl you are lkely to meet outside of the bar scene eg chance meeting or Online

A signifcant number of bar girls in Phils are tested for  infection on a weekly basis  i believe the same is true in some GoGo bars in Thailand.

Everywhere in SE Asia i have been to the number of bargirls massively outweighs the potential customers. Multi partners a day may be true in some areas with popular girls but i think many are happy to get 1 or 2 encounters per week.

I am not trying to diminish the risks of unprotected encounters with a bar girl but none of us really know what those overall risks maybe in comparison to any other sexual encounter. It is un-necessary for TV members here to start talk of skanky prostitutes on the basis of a UK propoganda sensationalist story.

Nah....your post reads like a typical monger.

Of course you are less likely to catch a disease from a regular girl than a bargirl. Also, thanks for a laugh about prostitutes being tested on a weekly basis. Even if that's true (which is, if course a total b.s.) how is this going to help if she got infected say last week as results won't show up on tests in several months.

Geez, you are making sex workers sound more honest than bankers. Wonder why.

many thanks to everyone. does anyone have any idea why the wire transfer might have triggered the freeze?

It doesn't matter. Some noob flagged your account and that's all that matters.

Btw, the exact same thing happened to me in November and I am pretty sure I posted about it here.

I am a Canadian, but have a BMO Harris account in Chicago. They never told me why they froze my account, but I think it was because I was withdrawing money from Thailand. I begged them to reopen it the only way was to see a branch manager in Chicago. Now, imagine explaining to U.S. border agency the reason why a Canadian who lives in Thailand wants to visit USA.

At the end I flew back to Canada and found a very nice lady at BMO Canada branch who made a few calls (that lasted 3 days) and got my account back.

You will most likely have no other choice, but next time I recommend you make a friend at the branch who can vouch for you and save yourself a very expensive trip.

Sure, I miss sitting at the fire back home waiting to die in the freezing cold, at a one bar electric fire, in a room where I cannot afford the rent ( like I miss a hole in the head).

You can't afford the rent back home, but you can afford to live in Thailand?

& why would they need a signature if it is their property

& will only get half if bought whilst married

OH that's right you may be another one that may want to put your signature on the toilet roll after your wife sold your Usufrut property

PS: I should give you all the Google co ordinates of a place in a village where you will get a house for 1.5 mill, but worth 3 mill

You only have to deal with the loan shark who owns the deed with my Usufrut on it

Maybe barter him down & come & see me to remove Usufrut

Bitten by a dog with all that foam in your mouth and perhaps missed the obvious sarcasm?

No one would need insurance if all countries of the World would use the tax money they have already taken from their citizens to pay for medical care which is a human right. This patient should have his medical expense covered by his Government. I am sure he or others in his family pay taxes. Why do Governments exist if not to take care of their citizens?

It's time the citizens of the World start  forcing their politicians to do the right thing-which is to serve their citizens and not themselves.

Lay off the pipe.  He is a Brit, not a Thai. He can get plenty of "free" medical care in Britain.

  7. If I wanted to get involved with women who have children, I'd have stayed in Canada.

Except, the woman would be getting alimony and the kid would be in school.

A thai woman with a daughter and no father. What a nightmare, lol.

The easy way to stop this is for Thai government to allow a limited size of land say 2 rai to be held in the name of a foreigner. Can tax them each year to pay for the privilege but at least the land is safe and stops the bad ones from getting rich.

    Ummm, no.

Idiot Farang will still build a house in wife's name.

It already is easy in Thailand. You just don't have to buy or build a house for the wife. No one is holding a gun to dumb Farang's head.

I am not married but have a Thai girlfriend and daughter. We're building a house for a lot less money, about 1.5 million baht. Personally I'd be ok to walk away from this property and leave it to my GF and daughter if we ever had any problems. But I am also happy to not spend more. And my GF is kinda sometimes hinting me to marry her, but I will avoid it. I feel if we'd be married, she or our daughter might be entitled to my oversees properties and that could cause problems for me eventually.

    Better safe than sorry.

I am extremely confused by this post. If she is your real daughter then she's entitled no matter what. If she is not it doesn't really matter if you are married or not.

And why wouldn't you leave your overseas property to your (real?) daughter? Who you gonna leave it to? The government?

every day I have a budget of so much baht, which can include a huge amount of debauchery.

Easy to stay on budget if you don't get emotionally involved.

Ironically it is the debauchery and my very valuable freedom that keeps me from going broke here in the land of scams.

and after four years in Thailand the girls know you know the score when you say you don't have a girlfriend.

and if you think Thailand is bad try getting divorced in California.

Meh, find a woman on equal footing and there won't be any money issues and ripoffs besides the usual every day greed. So far 3 guys came out of the closet. The honesty is admirable, but it's these exact guys that I learned from reading Thai forums before I moved to Thailand.
