Why do people make excuses for not tipping, if the service is ok, then tip,

If it's not don't. End of.

But there is a lot of tight people out there who really think they should never tip. ....sad sad people.

You are sad imposing your American ways into a culture where tipping is not expected. Does it make you feel more important? Hard working Thais absolutely hate your habit.

Try tipping in Japan and you will be ridiculed for insulting them.

Everyone works hard. People at McDonald's work hard. Do you tip them?

I am guilty of tipping myself, but I always get an earful from the wife.

So yes, I'm a bit of a hypocrite, but at least I'm aware.

Well done Rooster. I appreciate your efforts to stand up for Pattaya. Those of us who live here, know the reality and 95% or more of that printed in tabloids is garbage, miles from the mark.

    No, it's not.

Why are you lying to yourself, like those posters living in Chiang Mai claiming the outstanding quality of live.

I go to Pattaya twice a month. If it wasn't only 2 hours from Bangkok and cheap 4-5 star hotels, I'd go elsewhere..... and now I actually do. Sri Racha. The hotels are full of horez. So, you are denying this?

    Hi Franck,

my profile/thinking/past situation in France/age etc, is pretty similar to yours. I retired and moved permanently in Thailand 4 years Ago. I gonna give you my perspective. But first, be aware that many comments on this site are biased.

To start with, obtaining a retirement visa in Thailand is easy and straightforward, and it would be better to get it in France, before your move. This would be a 1 year visa, renewable in Thailand every year without trouble, providing you can prove sufficient retirement income and/or savings. Once in Thailand, you will have to re-confirm the address of the place you are staying in every 90 days, this is a little annoyance but achieved within an hour at the local immigration, and can also apply online. That is it for the administration ! Really nothing compared to France....

Anyway, I am living in Chiang Mai with a lovely girl 20 years younger than me (I am 59) for more than 3 years now. I am much happier here and going back to France is totally out of my mind.

I am against the mariage institution, but obviously, and as in any long time relationship, it is necessary to build in some kind of security in a couple. We do not know what can happen tomorrow, therefore I bought a decent house for my girlfriend and made it clear to my family that whatever I own in Thailand (money in thai bank, car, motorbike etc) will be the property of my partner should I die. I also support her family, and pay the University for her 2 daughters. All of this is affordable in this country. For a very decent life here, I would say you need about 2000 euros per month.

Happiness is round the corner, but please ignore the comments of 60 years old chaps living in Pattaya, short timing 20 years old beauties...

This comment surely has to be a joke. Yes, come to Thailand, find a younger woman and support all her family.

What a way to feel loved and then make a comment about guys living in Pattaya.

    Weird.

Sure there are you just need to look at international companies and brands not the Thai Chinese owned mickey mouse businesses that would save 1 satang on toilet paper if they could.

You talk a lot of crap in your posts buddy. You come sounding like so important with throwing numbers that make no sense whatsoever. Let's hear some of the names of these companies that pay so much according to you. My wife works for Siemens....you know....the BTS division. The company doesn't get more international and important than this. Your numbers are way out of line.

Name of these companies that like throwing money away please.

Remember that next time you get on the cheap ticket Asian carrier where the pilot looks like a 22 year old Korean Boy-Band dancer and the cabin crew are selected only for being “pretties”.

Ok, but is this really true?

I remember being on a cheap Hainan Air flight and they were showing the pilot's 20 year career on seat screens.

It's not extortion. If Canada adopts the livable, fair pay but no tipping system, your restaurant bill will go up instantly by about the same percentage.

Unlike US, Canada does pay a living wage. Waiters get a minimum wage which is $15 an hour and expect 20% tip nowadays. The same wage Wal-Mart and McDonald's employees get. I understand waiters in US restaurants get paid much less, hence the tipping culture.
